Mozilla did used to be slowish, now is amazing. I can't run IE on linux at home and on windows at work.
I can't see any argument nowadys for IE apart from that mozilla uses extra resource under windoze. But to be quite honest the overhead of windows itself is hideous! So I am still better off with mozilla.

Oh yeah that fair enough.. But re: lindows we already have WINE if you want to do that.

My point was far from being ideological though. In fact it probably damages propritary software on linux more than GPL software. We are far less likely to get nice native versions of propriatary software if everyone can just use the windows verson. I am not about to say havong the freedom to actually run windows software on linux because the real point of linux is the ability to escape from restrictions and do what the hell you like.

But the real difference between WINE and Lindows is the fact that the code in WINE can be used to help developers make nice native ports of their windows apps and Lindows (and this is speculation based on the evidence so far..) appears to have it's own closed code which lets you ummm run windows apps. Really I think if you want to run a windows app in linux use WINE and let the developer of that app know how easy it is and maybe we can get a port. Thats not ideology thats getting us the best choice of apps on our platform as aposed to a drain of everyone using apps from another platform through emulation, which is a fairly unsatisfactory way of working.

If we all just give up and use use windows software, whats the point? The point with gnu/linux or perhaps more importantly the GNU part, is the fact that we like doing things differently. I don't use linux just because I don't like windows it's because I like open free software, and I like the way if I don't like something I can re-code it or at least whine at the guy who wrote it :)

If we all just were lazy and used windows software on our linux boxes we might as well use windows and use cygwin, windowblinds and litestep to cover up the cracks, and besides noone would bother to write any Linux software anyway because everyone uses Word right?

Yes it's a bleak and perhaps a little unrealisitic (I am never using word in ANY kind of parrallel universe) . But the basic fact is we don't want to use windows apps because we should be writing Linux apps. Besides it's quite obvious thet people are resistant to the idea because WINE runs windows apps quite damn well (last time I bothered to test it) but I for one hope noone really bothers.

  6. Re:Use QT on GTK-- vs. QT · · Score: 1

Ah it's better because it's better? Wow what a persuasive argument.

I think the real argument for QT is probably the fact that it is designed for C++ whereas GTK+ is designed for C. GTK-- is a fudge to get GTK+ to look like C++. Now personally I prefer GTK+, but for this project I would recomend QT because the poster wants to write in C++.

Truely we are lucky to have a choice of such excellent toolkits. Personally I love programming in GTK+ and FAR prefer apps written in it because QT looks far to MFC for me... I think its important to note QT's headstart as well, QT is nearing version 3 GTK is not so nearing version 2.

Basicly it all comes down to the fact that the level of choice that "free" (as in speech &&|| beer) programmers have more choice and should use the tool for the job.

Well... If people actually want non-windows they build a desktop out of random stuff (fvwm+gkrellm+belt+bucci-clock==something that DOESNT look like windows) If they do want windowsie look they use Gnome or KDE. If they want Afterstep they use Gnustep or Afterstep, if they want CDE we send them to a mental asylum, UNIX gives you a choice, cool huh?

Well it's, very hard for these well loved platforms to actually die die. Look at the Amiga nuts, there are STILL releases coming out (believe amiga classic os 3.9 or somesuch) even though the corpse is nearly a decade old, and who knows one day it may even come back to life in the form of this amiga one milarky (given some lightning perhaps)..

And look at BSD in comparison and it's absolutly nowhere near death (strong (fanatical) user base, fairly open etc.). BSD will pull through, becuase there are still shed loads of people using it (and unlike those dedicated amigans you dont need any exotic hardward to run it). Ok you don't have the media honey status of linux but I really don't think that is going to stop the platform riding this out. Ok so a bunch of the developers need new jobs (I see this as the main problem, trademarks and getting people to press the CDs are really secondary concerns..) but with the likes of apple taking an interest in the BSD codebase I can't see that these coders arn't going to be of interest to someone..

And I AM a linux person.. I have only ever installed it once exclaimed "oh thats nice" and then blatted it to make room for mp3s :). See we are not all that non-understanding.. Although to be quite honest what you guys really need is Debian BSD, see no corperate whoring no getting ripped off...
