The interface is not the same since 1984. It has undergone substantial change and growth and is an excellent GUI. How old is xwindows?
You state "Apple doesn't know the first thing about designing a UI", but even the most anti-Apple slashdotter will readily admit they DO know what they are doing in UI design. Their products win awards.
Apple computers do not cost "several thousand dollars" unless you really feel the need to spend that much. The iMac is $799, if that's not enough oomph for you, the new iBook is an outstanding LAPTOP for the money, and even it is not "several thousand dollars".
Bill Atkinson is one of the original Apple programmers. He worked on Hypercard, if I recall correctly. I assume parent is modded down as "offtopic" because people have no idea who Bill Atkinson is...
It always cracks me up... Apple is apparently hated by so many Slashdotters - yet I would bet there are more articles about Apple than any other computer manufacturer, and those articles consistently have a high number of posts attached to them.
So I ask you, if you think Apple is irrelevant, why are you reading and posting in this thread?
I know this is old news, but why did Gracenote sue Roxio in the first place? If they are claiming copyright infringment, aren't the maintainers and contributors of freedb.org to blame?
I admire the efforts of the programmers who make Linux possible. But soon all the Linux "companies" will be gone. Yet still no one cares about the user interface of Linux.
Unfortunately, it will probably be too late when the coders realize that user interface and ease of use DOES matter. What can be done to kickstart an EASY distribution?
Not just GM - Ford, Chevrolet, Toyota, Honda, all have production natural gas vehicles that you can buy and use today. In California, this even gets you access to the carpool lane, even if you are a single driver, which is a great perk.
We live in REALLY interesting times. For the first time, it is possible to share and communicate huge amounts of information with others anywhere in the world.
Fact is, we are only beginning to deal with this on an international scope. It is entirely conceivable that within the next few decades the major powers of the world will become more and more entwined, until there is little difference between the citizens of the United States, Japan, France.
Soon it may not matter much whether you are Canadian or Dutch, because the laws that affect you daily will be commonly shared across borders.
Tivo is a great example of a company using Linux in a way that Grandma can understand. Linux as a desktop environment might be confusing for some, but Tivo puts a nice face on it - you never know the underlying system is running Linux, you just get a pretty GUI.
My question is why can't that happen on the desktop? Clearly Tivo has shown it's possible to make it really easy, but to also retain the hackability underneath for the geeks to play with.
I have to wonder about anyone who stores important data using one of these free online storage services like idrive.com... sure they are nice, for free, but you're nuts if you put critical data on them.
I know the end of the "free web" is going to hurt for a lot of people that take advantage of such services, but with a pay service you will hopefully get a more stable, workable service. One positive point about having to PAY for web services is that consumers will have more recourse when something goes wrong. Obviously, that's no guarantee the company won't go out of business, but it helps.
I'd feel much more confident about using a service if they charged $3.95 a month rather than free.
100% wrong. This is not a free speech issue. When you spam, you are trepassing on my private property. You have the right to say whatever you want - but no one is required by law to give you a venue. I have every right in the world to keep you off my private computer network.
If you want to exercise your "free speech rights", feel free to do so - buy your own printing press, radio station, or write letters to the editor.
Besides, the Washington law in question ALLOWS UCE, as long as it is properly identified as such, with non-forged headers. Only unidentified spam, with faked headers is illegal.
Unfortunately, this ruling will change nothing in the world of spam. Spammers will continue to send spam to citizens in every state.
Sure, it's illegal, but to find and prosecute spammers requires: 1. Some technical knowledge, 2. a warrant to get info from their ISP. Even technical internet users will find that it's really hard to get #2.
Then after you're done suing them, you have to try to collect. Good luck. 100% of internet users, Washington residents or otherwise, are still going to get a boatload of spam.
There needs to be a website where you can post the names, addresses, and phone numbers of spammers, and let whatever happens to them happen. Oh, I know some people are going to post about how that's too much punishment for the crime, but I really don't care.
I get 30-40 pieces of spam daily that makes my mail account mostly useless. That's harrassment. And I HAVE to read it, because that's where my ISP sends administrative and billing stuff. I'm tired of having my time wasted - maybe after a few spammers have their car tires slashed or windows broken, others will hesitate before they spam.
Disclaimer - I don't own, nor have I ever used Tivo, but isn't one of the big selling points the 30 second skip? Why would they disable that? What do they have to gain?
Just out of curiosity, where do you live? Here (Southern California) the racer types tend to be sticklers for doing it right. However, they also expect the same from drivers!
cyclers have a hard enough time obeying basic traffic guidelines
You'd have to define "cyclist" - the serious ones know the vehicle code, and well. It's the helmetless redneck riding facing INTO traffic running red lights you need to worry about.
Maybe then, I'll get a chance to have a microchip-controlled rear derailleur
Ah, the French company Mavic has made these for years. I see guys with them every now and then. Apparently the early ones had some problems, but v2.0 is supposedly pretty nice.
I haven't tried them, but they make other nice stuff... wheels, brakes, cranks. Check it out.
Sometimes it is necessary for a cyclist to take the whole lane for their own safety. He might be working pretty hard to maintain that seemingly "slow" speed. Use the other lane to pass as soon as it's safe for both parties. Thanks.
The "X" means 10, genius. Get a life.
OSX is NOT based on a Linux kernel.

Couldn't agree with you more, dude, but the problem is that if you say it too loudly on Slashdot you're a "troll".
I know this is old news, but why did Gracenote sue Roxio in the first place? If they are claiming copyright infringment, aren't the maintainers and contributors of freedb.org to blame?
Parent is "+5, funny"? More like "+5, deadly accurate".
You can! It's slow though.
Don't worry, they'll be back to cry "apple is going out of business" next time there is an Apple article.
I just registered www.slashdotisgoingunder.com. Do you think they'll sue?
Unfortunately, it will probably be too late when the coders realize that user interface and ease of use DOES matter. What can be done to kickstart an EASY distribution?
Great post, but probably no one knows what it means!
If the energy expended on useless hacks like this was instead used to improve the usability of Linux, Microsoft would be out of business by now.

Gee, I didn't know Cal-ISO was running Linux.
