Before we get to bogged down in excuses and obfuscation, the point is that GM, at the time they were about to beg for government bailouts, led us all to believe they were producing a breakthrough vehicle - not a low rent Prius, or something altogether inferior in energy consumption to diesel economy cars that have been available for decades.
It's too bad that GM has blatantly lied about the Volt from the start. Google up the photos of its introduction, and the banners that say "230MPG". It is actually rated at 32 city / 36 highway, and its range is only 40 miles under optimal conditions. Running the air conditioner or driving in stop-and-go traffic lead some industry magazines to say the effective range was only about 25 miles on a charge.
The probability is that no one is going to be making all electric trips, and no one will be making electric trips who drives at highway speed.
Perhaps for puttering around town your gas usage would be reduced, but this vehicle is basically an inferior, significantly more expensive version of the Toyota Prius.
Not only that, but ethanol is a net LOSS of energy, and would be phenomenally expensive to produce if not for government subsidies (which are very useful for getting votes in midwestern states, coincidentally)
As a child of the 80s, this is what we were being told in schools growing up - not that the earth would die from global warming, but rather that the hole in the ozone layer and other environmental disasters would cause us to be plunged into a new ice age.
I guess the term "climate change" is a lot more useful than "global warming", if a few decade late.
I think the law should be written to say that there must be an additional opt-in, beyond location services, if your location data is going to be stored or uploaded off your device.
I know that on/. you always have to couch every post with a defense for every possible pedantic reply, but in this case, I thought "FOSSetc" would encapsulate the spirit of the vaguely "open" android platform and the spirit of the enterprise as a whole.
I agree. I know most slashdotters are relatively savvy users and aren't going to install the ZOMGFREEMONEY$$ app, the expanding user base guarantees that malware will get more sophisticated over time.
Sure, we could only install applications developed by a corporation we already deal with and should have an interest in keeping us happy and keeping our business by not installing malware on our devices (Sony jokes aside), but doesn't this suppress the audience for "little guy" developers? Isn't that contrary to the spirit of FOSSetc?
There definitely needs to be some review and testing on Google's part. The end.
Did that turnip truck roll through town again already?
that is NOT what people are protesting about - cosmetic items are not what the protests are about at all.
The protests stem from the leaked company memo saying that game-changing items will be for sale eventually.
especially Linux netbooks - no consumers will want windows once they've seen ubuntu...
I would settle for the gurus figuring out how to stop all the personal appeals from Jimmy Wales
This is my reaction too. I wouldn't want to hire someone who is always looking for shortcuts.
How do you think academics prop up cushy, permanent jobs in fields that have little practical use? General education requirements.
Tourette's is not something to joke about. Hopefully you never have a child affected by it.
What does that mean to any of them today, now that they have had cut and paste for years as well?
What's in Room 101?
Did the iCloud service ever really exist?
In addition, does this criticism not apply to Google's budding Music service?
It would be interesting to know if they are paying RIAA off out of the revenue from the iCloud service.
However, as far as "Steve wouldn't do that, Steve loves us"... when it comes to subpoenas, Apple might not have a choice but to comply.
even though there was only 1 comment when I clicked, I knew I would be too late.
I'm not too worried, as my gigantic robotic stamping boot is in alpha testing
well, you were right up until that last bit. I do love me some fried chicken.

At least the monitoring is optional... for now.
