  1. About Slackware.... on Slashback: IPO, Protest, Ripping · · Score: 1
I've never heard a Slackware user complaining, so Patrick and company clearly know what they're about.
That's because a lot of people see Slackware, become frightened and run away. All of the people using Slackware are probably smart enough that if they see something they don't like, they dig into it and hack away until everything is to their liking. Other distributions have more Windows refugees who want answers given to them. Not that that makes Slackware better in any way, I've been playing with Mandrake 8 and I like it a lot.

  3. Another modern remake? on "In Search Of" TV Show Is Returning · · Score: 1

This will probably just end up being another crappy remake of a once-good TV show. I wasn't really a huge fan of that show the first time around, but I remember seeing a few cool episodes. But does anyone recall the "new and improved" versions of Get Smart, Candid Camera, etc...? They weren't around for very long.

Not that remaking a cool old show is necessarily a bad or unoriginal idea. It's just that some shows have their time frame (I can't picture the Dick Van Dyke show today). And some stars' portrayal of characters simply can't be repeated. (n/a for this example.) Will "In Search Of" round 2 be successful? My bets are on no.

  7. What's the signifigance? on Microsoft Releases Windows CE 3.0 Source · · Score: 1

What is the true meaning of this? Microsoft released some source code for its embedded OS under a broader license. Microsoft could have a number of different reasons for this.

Perhaps Microsoft is listening to the Open Source community. IMO, the Open Source community is full of bright individuals whose allegiance would be an asset to Microsoft. The purpose of releasing source code along with binaries (especially with regard to operating systems) is to help others produce better code for applications, and to help improve your code, with the help of source-level debugging.

But given Microsoft's somewhat notorious past, I don't believe that this is the case. This may be one of the beginning steps in a new "embrace and extend" strategem. I wouldn't be surprised if, in a few months, Microsoft starts outlining reasons why releasing WinCE code was a tremendous failure, and why Open/Shared Source is worthless... etc etc. Like it or not, this would be a major sign to a lot of businesses, and would taint their image of Open Source. Its acceptance into the major business world would be undermined.

But then again, Bill Gates isn't paying me to be a spin doctor, so take everything I say with a grain of salt.

Well, the price of much commercial software drives many to use free (and Free) alternatives. A bunch of Open Source people threatening never to buy Adobe's products ever again isn't threatening at all.
