    Back when I worked at Nokia, my laptop took about 5 mins to boot. It was regular practice to pull the network cable to stop it phoning home ... which took even longer. Logging in from the Windows prompt took a good 30 seconds as it updated profiles and synched user crap. We were all Linux guys, so it was a great laugh.

    If this post is representative of Nokia's workforce then how they arrived their current roadmap makes more sense.

    If you are like most people I know that make similar bold, out of context statements that are akin to a measuring tape in a shower, I'll tell you that you can have IE remember your Facebook password and log in much faster than that.

    I find it hysterical how many people are concerned with that handful of minutes waiting for a boot but can stretch a trip to the bathroom to take a piss into a 15 minute excursion and see no problem with it. Funny how that works...

    Well, I generally come in at least fifteen minutes late, ah, I use the side door - that way Lumbergh can't see me, heh heh - and, uh, after that I just sorta space out for about an hour.
    Da-uh? Space out?
    Yeah, I just stare at my desk; but it looks like I'm working. I do that for probably another hour after lunch, too. I'd say in a given week I probably only do about fifteen minutes of real, actual, work.

    Though only the really crappy black lists are blocking whole IP ranges and less and less people seem to be following those blacklists, at least for domestic IP ranges.

    No, some corporate solutions block dynamic IP ranges (Axway), and I assume if they are then others are too. This also goes back to other folks getting his mail.

    My friend would qualify but his kids are not in school yet, and his oldest won't be for 2 years. So he and is family have to wait 2 years, what BS....

    Yes, that is one of the conditions. If your friend's situation counters the imagined scenarios described here that folks who qualify for this are undeserving then you should post the details of it (really). I would like to hear real-life examples of who directly benefits from this program.

    Last thing we need is a flux of new subscribers that are low-income (read: jobless or underemployed) who have all the time in the world to suck up my precious bandwidth.

    From a bandwidth perspective I'm more concerned about the folks that torrent lots.

    This is a recurring theme on /. and misses the point. Better hardware is irrelevant if all it can do is warm the lap of the target consumer. I doubt a large percentage of iPad owners fixate on / can tell you what's under the hood.

    I'm an AT&T customer and I'm not being punished by this action. In fact, since I'm not in the top 5% of data users (as the others have already said) I actually might benefit from this.
