  1. What really sucks ... on Internet Backbone DDOS "Largest Ever" · · Score: 2

What really sucks about this is the people that bitch about "not having their Internet" are the ones potentially causing the problem with unprotected computers. We know nothing this massive could be caused without some kind of trojan`ed DDoS network, and the way those get propogated is through ignorant users.

*THINK*, then post. Did you notice the "HD" in the model name? It stands for "High Definition" - this display has a native resolution of 1920x1200 pixels. Perhaps that might be the reason for the pricetag? Did you know that a comparable Sun 24" LCD (365-1414) costs $4,500?

    Yeah, and you know what?

    IT WASN'T REVIEWED EITHER!!!

Thank you for your thoughtless post ... maybe you should try that whole "thinking" bit before you post.

  3. Re:Don't bitch about lack of Apple LCDs on LCD Round-up · · Score: 2

Yeah, but is all that really worth the $1,000? I'm not arguing that the HD Display isn't cool as hell, but it's so damn expensive. And compared to the 22", surely it's not worth the extra cash. The 22" should be more than ample, and the extra $1,000 could go into the computer.

When I bought my 19" flat Trinitron CRT I had the option of going to a 21" for $400, and at $200 an inch it just wasn't worth it. Instead, I bought two 19" CRTs and a Matrox G450. I get higher resolution out of one of my monitors with a better image than any LCD I've ever seen. And then with two of them (for a fraction of the cost of a high quality LCD) I have more digital desktop space than just about anyone I know ( 3200 x 1200 ) with a higher refresh rate, higher color, and sharper image.

Gaming is a little different with a Matrox card ... but I don't game much anymore anyway (:

Who in the hell is going to pay $3,500 for 23" when they can get 22" for $1,000 less? That's $1,000 an INCH! Nothing else in the world costs that much money.

  5. Don't bitch about lack of Apple LCDs on LCD Round-up · · Score: 4, Informative

If you look a the ones they're comparing, they are all 15" and 17" displays. Apple has one 17".

They are comparing these displays for the "PC" market - in order to use an Apple display on a non-Apple computer you have to get an expensive adaptor in addition to the already over-priced display. The ones reviewed are relatively inexpensive displays.

Cut them some slack, journalists have the right to review whatever the hell they damn well please - if you want a review comparing the Apple displays to other people's displays, do it yourself.

So basically you want the option to "auto-tile" windows in such a way that Windows has via the right-click taskbar menu? Oh even better example, the auto-tile in mIRC? That is actually a really nice feature ...

My problem with that, though, would be minimizing windows constantly inorder to have the windows I want to look at be large enough to see the contents. This is why I like to have windows overlapping. I can just click on any part of them to bring them to the top, and do nothing to send them out of the way.

But I understand where you're coming from - it's just a very small group of people that would want to use an environment that way.

Things that I concider bloat are dumb ass skins like Trillian uses - why doesn't it have an option to use Window's windows? Or OS X's visual bloat - who needs that damn genie effect? So you have five people using HFS(+) doing software developement - I have twenty people using apps that nearly peg out the FS for hours at a time. Their mileage WILL vary.

Wow dude, that kicks ass! The worst I've seen is the error where the file size is being reported incorrectly. A file showed up as some 37TB or something. Of course the OS had no idea what to do with the file, and the only way to get rid of it is to format/reinstall.

One of the nice things about Macs (old school at least) is that I could just boot from a CD and copy everything on the HDD (minus the bad file) to the server, format the drive, and copy it all back. Good as new ... errr ... old.

HFS and HFS+ have serious file corruption issues that most people don't ever see because they don't use their computer for more than web serfing and email. When you get into a business environment and really go at it full speed, the file system chokes. It's slow, resource heavy, and prone to file damage. It's a regular occurance on my 20+ PowerMacs to have to boot from a Norton CD and "Disk Doctor" the file system just to get them to boot from their hard drive.

And why exactly do they need two instant message protocals? Let one go (ICQ!!) to the OSS community.

And it would be REALLY nice if they had a "thin client" (might actually exist and I'm not aware) that allows customers to use their pipe without installing all their bloated software. I mean, they are the broadest reaching ISP on the planet.

Anyway, what I was going to say ...

Anything they can put on an optical disk and sell in a store, we can copy and put on network hard drives. Mp3 stereo units are creaping into existance, and network players are going strong (My AudioTron rocks). I don't really see people buying new stereo units that play more optical media.

These new formats aren't going to be good for portable use, or for people who don't own high end audio/video receivers and hundreds of dollars worth of speakers. They will be good for nice media rooms, or people with high end car audio. But these people, I'm sure, would rather buy hard drive solutions and store all their music on them. No one likes to load/unload disks - heck, that's why we have 100+ disk changers.

Honda has even included an Mp3 player in the dash of the new Accord. It only plays mp3 cds though - no hard drive.

I totally agree with the upgradablity being a major selling point. Some consumers have already ditched three formats (LP, 8-Track, Cassette) to get where we are today. The old hardware is starting to pile up in everyone's garage - we don't need to be doing that again so soon.

Oh, and there is a Photoshop for Solaris. I'm sure with a little work someone could get it to run in BeOS. But there are plenty of other editors our there. You could run GiMP for BeOS.

Once again, the OS never really reached maturity. If it had, more people would have been writing software for it. When they chose not to work on a G3/G4 version, they lost the Mac crowd, and that was their biggest market. Adobe would surely not pick them up after that.
