Forgive my ignorance when it comes to IE, but hasn't IE had a "Compatibility View" since IE7, to maintain backwards-compatibility with apps like these?

Anyone have experience with it? Does it work as advertised?

IIRC, the local PR officer initially told the papers a flying disc had crashed and been recovered. Then a day or so later a higher-up said it wasn't a disc but a weather balloon. I would assume the consipracy theories would have started around then.

  6. Re:MS needs to stop futzing around with the DVD dr on Firmware Troubles For Old Xbox 360s, Possibly PS3s As Well · · Score: 1

Bad move, MS. You used to have the definitive lead (in the U.S. anyway), and could have secured it by sticking to the traditional 5-year life cycle. But now Sony (and even Nintendo now) is catching up and preparing to pass. And you're just standing still.

Nintendo broke the cycle by releasing the Wii well ahead of MS and Sony, and I've yet to hear anything about the Playstation 4. While the continued use of DVD in the Xbox 360 is limiting developers, there are still plenty of games coming out that fit on one DVD. Aside from Lost Odyssey, Final Fantasy XIII and L.A. Noire, I can't think of another Xbox 360 game that needed more than 1 DVD disc.

Besides the disc space issue, I'm hard pressed to find reasons for MS to release a new console. It already does 1080p, and some games even do 3D if you've got the external hardware for it (TV, glasses etc).

MS is hardly standing still either - they are still expanding the services being offered by Xbox Live, which I would say is the biggest draw for the console. Sony's online service is a mess (not just security-wise), and Nintendo's is practically non-existent.

Similar comments were made about memory usage when Vista was released, precisely because of caching and the OS keeping track of which apps you launch at which time so that they could be cached preemptively.

Some people just like seeing massive chunks of free memory :)

If you don't already know where to find something, you will never find it.

Hitting Search (meta key on your keyboard, or the Ubuntu logo up top left) and typing in what you're looking for translates to "hard to find" now? It's a better way of launch apps than going Applications > System > Terminal (or Accessories > Terminal, or wherever your particular distro hides the Terminal emulator).

Want to know what Remote Desktop applications are installed on your system? Hit search and type in "remote". On a clean install you should get 3 entries - one for setting up remote desktop access to your box, a VNC (I think) remote access client and the Terminal Services RDP client.

Same thing if you want to "pin" an app to the launcher - hit the + Apps button, search for what you want and chuck it in.

  11. Re:Macs will be a closed platform in the end on Apple To Distribute OS X Lion via the Mac App Store · · Score: 1

Those who pay the "professional premium" will be allowed to run their own programs without approval from Apple, including compilers and scripting environments, and will of course be able to develop programs for consumer computers (but will naturally have to pay Apple for distribution privileges).

While always a possibility, I don't see Apple going down this road. If everyone can develop, then everyone can pay Apple the distribution fees associated with the App Store. "Free" marketing and visibility through the App Store is something developers like, whether they're Rovio selling Angry Birds or a guy who hacked together an app he wanted to use on his MacBook in his spare time and thought he might be able to make a buck or two off it.
