The right tool for the right job.. definately should be applied to operating systems. sounds like this one is good for end users. maybe take on windows? making an os for presenting information to users is a good idea.
Standards are good. XML is good. Documentation should be in a standard format. Network traffic should be in a standard format. IPC traffic should be in a standard format. XML is good.
maybe then we can have some real inovation in the industry, instead of workers with a bunch of certifications that say they a TRAINED to do tasks, instead of think for themselves.
I saw the cover of CRW saying somethings to the effect of "Linux taking a stand". I just laughed to myself. Linux is free and opensource. great. wow. It still is clunky and poorly managed. OpenBSD 1if3!!@!
Sorry to all the Linux kids out there, but real Unix Operating Systems, such as Solaris and BSD-based systems, are stronger, more stable, and faster, when set up correctly, then linux will ever be. Why? simple: SLC's are there for a reason. The linux kernel may be controlled and coordinated by one person, but imagine a person with the supposed talent of Linus, times 50, working on making the Solaris Kernel better.
>>At the quantum level, things are fundamentally random
are you kidding me? at the quantum level, things are very NOT random. read some quantum mechanics, or better yet, some quantum theory pertaining to computing. the idea is that with supperposition and entanglement we can predict, with reasonable certianity, the outcome of a quantum coin toss. quantum computing would not exist if we couldn't.

I do not quite understand some of the posts in this discussion. People are relating the usage of IP6 to all this work that an ISP has to do to get it running. Almost all modern ip routers support IP6, not that layer 2 routers give a fu*k anyways. I am willing to bet that your ISP already supports IP6, it's just that no one uses it.(in a broad sense)
why does no one use it? lazyness. 32bit easier to remember then 128bit.
Users share music for free, no one cares about performance.
If people start paying, are others going to be forced to stay on while a paying customer finishes a download?
Does MS have hooks in Windows to prevent people from disconnecting? Will domestic violence increase because 14 year old wareZ kiddies sitting on 56k modems can't hax0r crays because all of their bandwidth is being used by 14 year old girls downloading their archive of Britney bootlegs?
Metallica is totaly in the right. Mp3's are not illegal; keeping them longer then 24 hours if you do not own the source media is. You cannot equate open/close source code to the issue of distributing copywrighten music.
btw, what do you mean by IP rights?

These guys are victums of the "dot-com revolution". If they had quality products, and quality sales staff they would still be around.

The reason it's so bad is because it doesn't have to be good to get the job done. Most management is just about getting things done fast.
There is usually a tradeoff between quality and expediancy.

Note: I am not a Solaris advocate.
