at compaq about this. Does anyone know if the device actually runs linux or if this is propriatary software for linux. If it is running linux and someone does know who to email, lets make an open letter and do something about it. Then we can get the community to help back up the GPL, if it doesn't run linux they have the right to license there software how ever they want, after all the GPL is a license.

but I really hate these guys. I have a huge problem with the way retail business is done. I was completely unaware that these kinds of practices where not only leagal but generally accepted. Why should a store be aloud to change it's prices in such a manor. For example a bar (in Illinois I know laws differ) can not have a happy "hour" and then raise there prices after everyone is in and drinking. Isn't it really the same thing. A store manager sees that sales are really high on beanie babies today so we are going to raise the price 5 dollors during the slow down before lunch time. What the heck is up with that? Maybe I am missing something, after all it is there store they should be able to charge what ever they want but this is like price switching isn't it. I really hate this charge what the market will bare idea. What happend to charge a fare price, and be competitive with the other store. I guess when there is only two stores and all the little guys have been bought or crushed we don't get that any more. We get greedy people who can do pretty much what ever they want to the entire country. Ok, I am off the soap box. Be nice.

with law and tech is that they are both too large for one person to handle the total extent of. What I mean is, you can be a great judge or you can be a great techy. Understanding the scope of technology is going to take a shift in the general knowledge of the entire populus. If the general guy doesn't know that not being able to play DVDs under Linux is a huge precident being sent, how can we expect the average judge to know any better. The judge in this case knew that he was dealing with something large but didn't really know how to handle it. Nothing like this has been done before. If we develope a group of techno-judges why would they be able to handle the implications any better. We need to keep the judges doing the law and the geeks doing what ever it is we do and have some kind of technical expert. After all judges don't know DNA testing why should we expect them to uderstand packet switched networks.

has anyone fixed that whole no DVD, USB, winmodem support problem yet. Why concentrate so much on all these great new things (don't get me wrong this is good) when we can't even support the huge hardware base of our biggest competitor. Until we can support the same stuff Windows supports we are never going to make it. I know there are great things going on but don't get all excited until we can do the simple things first. Regular users don't want SMP support that want to be able to connect to the internet and type documents that there boss can read.

Get with us, lets have a town meeting, lets fix the copy right laws and that stupid DMCA, lets do something, start a web site, take out full page ads in the Times, or Wall Street Journal, I don't care do something, use our geek powers and get something done. Have we become such a greedy people that we must make sure that no one else can make money from any idea that someone or some group claims to be theirs. The Olympics have been around for ever, yet we let someone own the name, and make other people pay to say this is official. We are in such a need for money that we must tag our merchandise with DNA to insure that no one else sells it. Oh and by the way, you can duplicate DNA without having to go back and get more samples from the donor, but hey what do I know.

  9. Curious on Napster Usage Quadruples · · Score: 2

Who is lobbying for change? If everyone thinks that Napster is such a good thing what are we doing about it. Can't we the people(sorry I quoted that from somewhere and didn't give them credit) lobby for changes in some of these laws to allow for things like Napster(I think I need a copyright thing here). If this should be legal why don't we make it so. After all we did elect them we should have some sort of control over what happens. Since Napster's usage has grown 4 fold don't they make money some how. Can't we pay some freaking lobbyist to do some work for the geeks, maybe start a web sit for people to add there names to for change in the copy right laws. After all, these things are broadcast over the air through my body, doesn't that make it at least a little bit mine.

  11. As I read through on IBM, HP, Intel, NEC Announce Open Source Lab · · Score: 1

these posts, I start to wonder if the linux community wants to get paid or not. I am sure I am going to get flamed but are standards for things that bad. Would it be all that bad if everyone used a "system" directory for all of the standard libraries. We it be all that bad if software "venders" where required to put there libraries in a standard directory to be linux certified. And is it all that bad to have major hardware companies funding some real linux work. The linux community is it's strong point. If you can focus that community a little bit with some basic standards we wouldn't have problems like oh, you didn't compile for Debian, or the constant problems with dependencies. Why would making things easy for a "user" (as apposed to guru) to install because of a few standards be so bad? If people in the linux community really hate microsoft so much why are they apposed to an effort that will help get linux into the mainstream faster. We can always work on the bugs later, after all isn't that what we do anyway, submit our code waiting and hoping for peer review so it can all get better?
