Slashdot is not linux. Redhat is not linux. VA is not linux.
Linux is linux. ALl the others are just 'doing things' with it, which is perfectly fine. Linux exists because people want it to, and because people made it, not because of business.
Without passing judgement on the quality of either system, let me say this:
1) A simple probe to see if a mail server is relaying or not is by no means an 'attack' and does not harm anything.
2) The only reason any of these services work are because ISPs *CHOOSE* to use them. THey do not censor anything themselves, the ISP DOES. A fundamental principle behind the internet is that each piece of network can grow *as it wants to* carrying whatever traffic *it wants to*. IF they want to block traffic based on what a third party says.. that is THEIR RIGHT.
No on all counts.. I have a dedicated line from an ISP. THe type of line is largely irrelevant; it's not dialup.
And as I said, I use MAPS because I *choose* to. Should I choose not to, then I won't. If ISP's want to get together and form some kwierd kind of anti-spam alliance that blosk all non-registered mail servers, THAT IS PERFECTLY FINE WITH ME! It's their perogative to create their own private mail system by whatever rules they want.
The point is, it's up to me how I want to run *MY* mail server. If I want to incorporate MAPS into it, that's my business.
As for me not being able to send mail.. should that happen, it is up to those servers that are using the service to decide if it is acceptable to them. If it is acceptable to them to not allow me to send them email.. that's their choice.
MAPS is doing *nothing*. IT is up to the ISP's individually to go with maps or not.
My beef is both. Are cars for fun okay? Sure.. but not if they are harmful. Destruction of the environment for *FUN* is not acceptable.
Should your jetski be out on the lake? Actually.. NO.. IT SHOULDN'T.. do you know how much oil and crap it dumps in the lake? Same for many boats.
Quality of life? Quality of life is going steadiloy donwhill as we destroy the world around us. Am I an environmentalist nutcase? Certainly not... but think about it for a minute.
My quality of life allows me to go out and buy a brand new BMW tomorrow if I want. Do I? No. I don't. Because I don't need a car. Is driving fun? yes. Do I like it? yes. But.. it's HARMFUL.
I Understand perfectly that there is a conflict of interest, and that it is serious. I don't dispute that whatsoever. I'm not saying 'leave the judge alone'.
What I'm saying is, it's not necessarily a conspiracy, or even intentional. It just so happens that this judge, in the past, has dealt with the party before under different circumstances. A problem for the bench? yes. intentional conspiracy? I doubt it.
The answer to the domain problem is to *NOT CREATE ANY NEW DOMAINS*.
Let it the world figure it out on it's own. It's heirarchial. news.com could easily start handing out subdomains like cnn.news.com, blahblah.news.com, under whatever terms it wants... and so can everyone else.
I realize I should wait for the report.. but.. What 'radiation' do people think comes out of cellular phones?
I mean, are they worried about the 800Mhz -> 5 Ghz range?
The thing is, when Joe American (or any other Joe..) thinks Radiation, he thinks like 'nuclear bomb' and 'radioactive isotope'.)
Are we talking alpha, beta, gamma. or.. ????
No.. we aren't. We're talking about a couple of watts of 900Mhz (or perhaps 2.4Ghz or somewhere in there). It's *NOT* ionizing radiation. As far as we know, it can't break down molecular bonds. 2.4Ghz is used in microwave ovens, to shake polarized molecules (chiefly water) , but that takes a reflecting cavity to keep the microwaves in, and a 600 watt microwave emitter! And that's just to heat food up! (really.. if you stuck your hand in a microwave oven for like 3 seconds, it probably wouldn't do any permanent damage to you. Might hurt though...)
I'm not denying that cellular phones may pose some kind of health risk to do the RF.... but if they do, this wouldn't be just about cellular phones, it would be a study into the effects of RF from *all* sources. Something we keep using more and more of, and still consider harmless.
Actually... the SUV will be in worse shape than the Camaro.
Contrary to what you and others think.. the car *should* be deformed in the accident. It is better to have the energy of the collision go into deforming the car than into the driver.
Old formula-1 racers could smash into a wall at ~200MPH and still be recognizable. New ones become completely demolished. The old ones would kill the driver on impact. The new ones don't.
Driving *should* be only about transportation. Or at least, primarily about transportation.
Hmm. Why do some cities have serious emissions rules, and others don't? Because.. some cities are windy, and polution gets sent 'elsewhere'.. so why should they care.
This north-american infatuation with cars is rediculous. Sure.. I have a car.
Your dolby digital stereo doesn't produce twice the pollutants it needs to or waste 10x the energy necessary to get you to work in the morning.
Let me get this straight. Giving free copies to the reporters (lots of free copies, even) is BUYING a good review? What are we supposed to give them? Crippled review copies? This is, after all, free software.. (or at least, Mandrake is free, as in beer).
And tell me.. isn't the fact that it's free a very realistic feature of the software? I mean.. with Win2k pro + office2k pro running you well over a thousand bucks.....
Okay.. but that's for COUNTRIES. Certainly they should adjust TLD space to reflect countries. They should *really* just BANISH.com,.net, and.org, and leave it to the regional entities.
Well.. how it is done is simple. There is absolutely nothing special, network-wise, about a mail server, other than the fact that it's running mail server software. If all you want to have the mail server do is send mail out.. you don't need any 'special' privelege. YOu can do it with your own computer.
Special settings in DNS and such are only required to receive mail...
I have my own computer that sends it's own mail. My own mail server. My own piece of the net. And I *chose* to accept that, if ibill is doing business with spammers, (which is against the spirit of the net, and totally rude), then I do not wish to have any relations with them. Do I want to force this on anybody else? Certainly not. But it won't happen on my mail server. Your rights end where mine begins. YOur legislation of the Internet begins where my equipment starts.
IF you don't want your ISP to use RBL, then find out if they are or not, and don't use that ISP.
Perhaps you are unaware, but a large number of mail servers are *privately owned* by collectives of people, companies, individuals, etc, and I will *NOT* have anyone dicatating to *ME* what *MY* mail server will or will not accept. I am *perfectly* happy with RBL providing me with a list of sites; I understand their method and think they are fair, and I don't care if someone gets wrongly listed from time to time. It's *MY* mail server. And people who have accounts on it can either live with it or go elsewhere.
So.. while you are complaining, does your ISP actually use RBL? Did you ask them? Hmm. Many ISP's have size limits on outgoing mail (so you don't mail 20GB files). Is that censorship? SOme only allow 20 recipients to a message at a time. Is that censorship? WHo decides what 'email' means. If it's my mail server it means 'incomign message meets certain RFC's, plus my own filters, plus doesn't get a match in RBL'. If it doesn't meet those criteria, it's not a message.
I can see how you would be initially pissed that RBL was 'preventing' you from sending mail.... But everyone must remember one other thing: RBL is not an authority. IT works because ISP's DECIDE that they *WANT* to use RBL to get their block lists. They understand and know how RBL works, and are willing to live with the consequences. REmember, email is not 'the phone system'. It's not centrally planned, and you have no common 'right' to send email to anyone, anywhere. It works because everyone agrees on common protocols, and to freely accept data from each other under certain terms. Period. Much like the internet itself.
So.. perhaps this company needs to SUE the ISP's that are actually USING the RBL. RBL doesnt' make them, it just publishes a list.
I recall within the last couple weeks, there was an extremely large 'Coronal Mass Ejection' heading towards earth. It was posted on/., and the TV crews explained about geomagnetic storms, power fluctuations, etc. possibly happening. Is this one that much bigger than the one a couple weeks ago?
Razorfish bills themselves out (and is generally accepted to be) one of the top web design firms in the world. Their portfolio is AMAZING. If the web site shown for this company is the one Razorfish built, then they SHOULD be sued.
I mean, what are you supposed to do if the work you paid for is complete crap?
No.. space is no guarantee. And space is not cold per-se.. it's also not hot. The lack of matter means there is also nothing to conduct heat away from you...
As for sterility.. Ibelieve that NASA has extremely strict procedures it follows in order to not contaminate the planet. Not just regarding life forms, but regarding rocket fuel, etc...
And for those of us who like to modify our own computing hardware, regardless of someone elses intended use, it certainly matters a great deal.
If it's linux based, I can hack the crap out of it.
Slashdot is not linux. Redhat is not linux. VA is not linux.

Restricting the display of violent video games for minors is no different than restricting the display of sexual things to minors.
Neither is right, both go against the 'constitution'. Both are bad.
1\5Athis is no worse. I'm sorry.

Umm.. okay.
A lawyer used to advise some company..
and many years later, he is a judge, and somehow it's conspiracy?

They should *really* just BANISH
You are supposed to report it, legally. Not doing so makes you accomplice.
Of course, I wouldn't talk either, as for this 'defacement' these kids would be treated like hardened criminals, when really it's a harmless prank.
Assembler is still largely procedural ;)
