Quite a move by the DOD. Now if the DOD requires compatible formats, this can virally implicate the rest of the Gov.

For years and years the warez people with their releases couriers and sites has generated this kind of bandwidth load, so in comparison, talking about a burnout test is kinda a joke.
humm, I wonder if the warez scene over the years have helped the buildout of the physical infrastructure.
"What.NET is..." all looks like a very intelligent posting, but now let me ask a few simple questions, as I'm wondering..
1. Howcome this posting is deadon-topic and given 5 in score? - 'what is.NET' could be a question to ask Mundie, but what can you possibly expect to hear back in the short time he can let out the words, that you cannot find detailed described on the net already. - What would be more interesting to ask, "why.NET from a non-MSFT POV? - how will adopting.NET in everyones strategies not lead to less independence from MSFT, and wouldn't jumping the MSFT.NET bandwagon instead of an alternative solution, give MSFT the upper hand in the competition?"
2. Howcome there are no serious zealot responses?(there may be some reverse psychology in the 'funny-department' replies, but I haven't found them yet.
3. Why is it that I do not trust this.NET being less beneficial to MSFT compared to in general? - Should this.NET become the 'platform' of the future, as stated in the posting, it integrates superbly with and is designed for windows - the closed API's. Yes it seems to provide some interesting features, but at what cost, and why should we as developers and competitors (although very very small ones), adopt the MSFT embraced technology with them in the lead? - with the past and MSFT business strategies in mind (many have already thanks to this, found themselves obsolete
Now you are talking. this is the first interesting post i've read in this thread so far.
open/'non'restricted source and whats alike will be a part of the future software philosophy, no doubt about it. so will closed/restricted source.
here is my little view on the matter which I base my business on as well as my idealistic beliefs:
systems/formats will mainly be based on the free/open princip for everyone to have freedom and oportunity.
solutions will mainly be based on the cost princip in order to generate a sufficient steady income in order to have the fundamental economy to provide what the customer specifically needs and to secure your employees and yourself. in addition to that you have to come to an understanding with your customers who wishes to incorporate special features - you give them the ability to do this. - there are reasons business wise why not to do it, but there are also reasons human wise why to do it. - and the goodwill pays back in customer satisfaction which again pays back business wise.
this will be the case until we reach star trek reality.
but you guýs just keep fighting as you please. the activity is business wise good for community sites making a living on the users participation. no offense/. I am pleased to participate as well.
The way we do things in my business, because of my and now also my associates philosophy, is that we make use of the systems as a platform on which we can deploy our solutions. we partially sell these solutions, others we give for free as appetizers so people can get the basics covered and get started. From the income generated, mainly based on the solutions we sell, we return some to the projects and people behind the development of the systems that we are dependent ón so these can improve and become more widespread in society.
welcome to the reality/the future/now guys.. its about cooperation. extremes can never exist without the other. they cover each their need and support each others reason for existing.
guess this was about time I spoke from inside the outside - should you agree with me, try to find my email and say hi.

I respect both the open source way as well as the 'microsoft' way. but i've had enough of the microsoft monopoly and had so for the last many years which brought me to where i am today, just as the level at which open source is today.

Way to go Rusty, being neither a capitalist or communist this little posting of yours agrees with my beliefs anyways.
The FUN part to me is that now the communist block has fallen, the capitalist is the only one left, and will cause its own doom. You see, with the communist block active as an opponent the capitalist block was provoked to increase in strength, so it did. Now the communist block is no longer officially active provoking the capitalist block to improve their defences and take distance. Instead now we'll see members of the capitalist block realize on our/their own where they are and that they have gotten too far out, and they will seek back towards the middle where the communist block was trying to pull them.
Funny aye.. without all the political bull pulling everyone with extreme beliefs, society adapts on its own.
So where will all this lead us.. to a Scandinavian cocktail?
I have been developing the concept of a personal assistent for quite a while now, and in my research I learned a few things the good phil.doc.whatever are to learn about our environment.
It is not our brains that are becoming weaker, it is the amount of information and our awareness of the information that increases as the information age evolves. To handle this pressure we develop tools to aid us in the process.
low tech vs high tech
both can be justified, it only depend on the environment.
lots of people can't be bothered taking classes, but wish to learn a few phrases and basics of a particular language. also to be concidered is that many people are more comfortable starting with basics on their own (remember those learning tapes for the cars, learning by mail classes etc - quite popular starting point). some of us feel better about getting on with the basics on our own in a relaxed environment where we are not afraid of being embarrased etc. Getting started is the most important step on the road.
so what I am getting at, these apps for learning, in a quiet environment is sometimes pretty good to have. I am looking forward to see this development coming on for the unixes. ..a side effect could be that the development could also be used in the development of voice recognition and voice control featured user interface where appropriate etc..
The story of my life..
but without her, that fantastic job prospect doesn't make me all that cheerful. ..without her, the dream is never complete, ..without her, I have a lot of free time,
No wonder I have so fantastic job prospects.
Sad, isn't it?

Your prediction for the future does not hold.
You have read to many marketing and distribution books and lived too little life.
Keep in mind those books were primarily written before the open source revolution or the authors had no feeling with this underground development and philosophies took ground and saw themselves find way into the hearts of many more.
Do not forget the other unixes either.
You can not make such a projection based on a merely business point of view, it will be flawed as it does lack perspectives to other higly influental areas which indirectly forms the future.
That your remark has been given 2+ score shows hordes of non-thinking individuals making up a flooding mass.
'Not yet' to the extent given in the example is worth rethinking. Because if the kernel and the rest of the system already now can deliver the functions needed, it will be an investment with an outcome impressing any banker, and some savings, you can make up investing in hiring or contributing to general og specifically related development, which can provide you more flexible, optimized, usable solutions that will enhance your structure and solidify your business structure.
You shall see..
Btw.. I'm calling for a unified packaging system for the unixes and it requires and first of all it requires a unified FHS. What efforts are being put into that out there?
Final comment:
The day linux become 1 company, you will learn that..Linux is to be found 6 feet under..
Faulty Dreamer,
Your idea is very appealing to me, a simple dreamer who wish to see more unix based desktop solutions deployed at our customer with ease of use for the customer, but although I am an executive and do have financials conciderations, I am always a dreamer, else I have no visions to base our business on. As a dreamer I am idealistic and hope Theo is likewise.
From my point of view I would rather support an implementation you do on top of the base system so it is based on modularity. So instead of focusing on integrating it all into one box, do protect the freedom of choice and preserve modularity. Something for the BSD's as Helixcode/Gnome is doing while focusing on linux.
You appearently aren't as $$$ oriented as you fear since you bring up the issues indirectly which must be your conciousness speaking out indirectly.
With the financial cap on, I can add that the idea of modular packages seems more appealing as well. We don't want another microsoft solution. Its a matter of philosophy.
Ok, well hope you could use my 0's and 1's. good luck.
We have two opposites, one is the party fighting for freedom(& the criminals) and the other is the one for control(& the law).
In the age of information these entities are in a battle of interests. The battle aid's to the evolution of information technology.
When the those that do not abide to law, engineer new technology for protection of privacy and at the same time intrusion into other parties, the law/control side are to enhance their technology base, which they do. This teoretical scenario can most likely be pictured by those having insight in the world of hacking, and related interests.
This works in both ways,
Now when those in control/those who abide to the law they have set and feels good to them, enhance their technology base with a system such as carnivore or similar (carnivore doesn't actually seem so scare, I can imagine much worse), then the situation has been turned upside down and now it is the ones fighting for freedom who are to introduce better technology to protect their interests.
epilog.
Systems such as carnivore that provokes actually aids to the evolution of protection of privacy. It helps to bring more awareness to the issues and more activity to solving the problems. Existing systems are being reviewed and improved systems will appear.

And now I explain why..
Everyday life today is very hectic to a lot of people. Plenty of things to remember, plenty of things to do, but it is not always that easy. One could argue whether it is caused by too many activities and too little time. Wether it is the one or the other, or a combination of these, it is of no importance. The situation is becoming an increasing problem, and people are lusting for a solution. (Many without being aware of it).
The solution are to assist in changing the perception of everyday life from being troublesome and at times inconceiveably complicated, to become more clear and manageable. - in short, the solution are to assist the individual in obtaining better control of everyday life - life in the fast lane.
The ideology behind such a solution is that it is to become easier to organize&manage. Common tools already in use are the wristwatch and the mobile phone and in part also the computer. By adding another tool which users are also to keep track of is a frightening thought. With this, the idea of technology in convergence comes to mind. The more to keep track of, the more time we waste, and these technologies are to assist us, not cover us in burdens. The idea a convergence product that integrates the wristwatch, the mobile phone and a computersystem hereby appears.
One can without much problems imagine 3 obvious platforms. One, where the technologies are gathered into a wristwatch. Another where they are gathering into a mobile phone, and a third putting it into one of those handheld computers. Evolution will most likely show, and has to some extent already, that all 3 platforms will emerge(and have already) and taken in use for each their purpose.
A convergence product that gathers the funtionality of the watch, phone, computer in one unit, makes it easier to keep track of, should present a simplified system, organization wise, and thus a simplified data management procedure and thus a timesaver.
The functions concidered makes it into a personal assistent that provides you with easy and almost instant access to communication with the entire world while it at the same time assist you in delivering and processing of your desired information.
The optimal position of a personal assistent is by your side, 24/7. Your own personal mobile secretary. Trusted and invaluable. Wish you could wear one? I do. A wearable computer is the solution of today&tomorrow bringing you just that. (The solution of the future would be a good looking holographic AI extension of the wearable with sensors to represent a virtual secretary:). The wearables are the next step.
From existing proven and applied technology platforms the wristwatch is the most common device in use. And that is what I personally want my wearable to be like. As I will not have to carry it. It will fit in, giving the right dimensions can be reached.
Integration of wireless communication and computing in a wristwatch device with discrete but powerful extensions is a part of the future.
Through natural evolution of technology the wearables will emerge and integrate in the everyday environments just like the wristwatch and the mobile phone. So do you ask me: "Are wearables entitled to existence?" I can only answer YES!
Not only will the technology have gigantic impact on personal management, it will also spawn an entire market for the industry to keep the workers busy making accessories/extensions of all kinds. The best base products will appear as modular systems tailored for personal solutions using open systems for extended connectivity, compatibility, interoperabilty. The base software will be structured as an open unix system. Entrepreneurs and Engineeres will find plenty of different purposes of use. Users are to apply whatever software solution they desire and need. Embedded versions of linux, bsd, qnx, something else prefered or something new in the future, it will be their choice as its their need and its going to be open. ...
Through time I have been visioneering & researching the discussed technology. This are soon to result in my first report presenting thoughts, ideas and conclusions on subject. ..Open for all..
