Belief requires faith. Smart or not!! until proven everything is conjecture/theory. I kinda feel that way about string theory, but that's probably because i am not so smart. Facts are disputed as belief, and that's mostly being closed minded and nothing to do with smarts.
I think he might mean the "made up" part more than any particular example. Personally i am not averse to having a creator, or life having "meaning" or even an afterlife. But I am not constrained by it, do not view the world in absolutes. As each religion is the one true path to salvation and all others are heresy.
