The Heise Newsticker (Heise being the publishers of the very excellent german c't computer magazine) reports today:

"The german office will be in Stuttgart. As a matter of fact, they are going to take over the entire Delix Linux branch. Delix's DLD distribution should continue to be maintained for at least a further 2 versions, with DLD 6.2 being planned for late summer. In the long-term the more desktop-oriented DLD distribution should be integrated into Red Hat; their domain has so far been most Linux server systems."

Overall, the results actually reflect not the OS count, but the server OS count on the net.

Agreed, the count does reflect servers, but I thought that was the whole point... You want to know what the OS of choice is in terms of commercial UN*X vs. NT vs. Linux vs. X, etc. And all of those are server systems.

I don't think the problem of machines "hiding" behind NAT firewalls, etc., is what's skewing the results, it's the exclusion of the other domains that's making the results not entirely trustworthy ATM.

  8. How to control? on Domain Monopoly's Days Are Numbered · · Score: 1
I would have to agree - the likelyhood that this sort of despicable behaviour (although I'd have loved to own altavista.com... ;] ) is going to continue or even get worse is entirely too high. The problem really comes in with checking and making sure that a "real" site is running on the domain name - how are you ever going to keep up with that kind of volume?

As was already mentioned, probably the only thing you could do is set up an independant quality control organization, with outside requests from Internet users for specific checks to be done on certain sites to be made possible. That way when you want to use a domain that a squatter is occupying, you could sent the org. an email, they'd check and throw the squatter out.

Again though, the problem you run into is sometimes deciding when someone is a squatter or not. They might legitimately be working on their site, in which case you have to give them some kind of ultimatum until they need to have something finished up. Probably generally a good thing, but the possibility for mischief is great here, too. Ultimately I don't think we have a real good solution just yet.

  10. Space-based solar power? on Review:The Sun, The Genome and The Internet · · Score: 1
All very well having space-based systems that collect solar power, but I believe we still have the problem of actually getting the energy where we need it most - i.e. back here on earth.

I think we could use hydrogen - use the energy collected to break up water molecules (from a captured asteroid) and ship the produced hydrogen back to earth to be used in fuel cells. All very fine and well, but with all that effort I wonder whether it's still economical...

Other possibility: microwave transmission? Dunno just how feasible this is, but maybe it could work. I'd just hate to fly through THAT beam! ;]

Ultimately until we have a good way of getting the produced energy back to earth, I don't think that's a really good solution.

  11. Nice enough, but... on DNA Strands as Semiconductors · · Score: 2
Wouldn't it be much better to concentrate on getting mechanical nano-computers to work on this kind of scale rather than building smaller electric ones? (Please read K. Eric Drexler's "Engines Of Creation".) Strikes me that's the more worthwhile avenue of research, especially since we'll be hitting more and more problems with electron tunnelling and at those scales nano-mechanic movement actually could be fast enough (I think) to overtake electrical impulses (unless they'd be travelling in a perfect superconductor).

Never mind all the other goodies we could get with nano-machines! ;]

The thing that makes me gladdest to hear about this is that now people will have a chance to run SAP on an imminently scalable platform (various clustering solutions) that is easily remote-administerable. I have watched people trying to deal with huge NT server farms and it was a nightmare! I think they're going to be extremely glad to do that under an OS that is designed to be used remotely.
