    well.. I'm using postgreSQL rather than MySQL, becuase of locking issues. So my comments relate to accessing a postgreSQL database from a desktop with no programming involved. First there is a nifty little program in the postgres distribution called pgaccess that lets you enter and retreive data. then there is the phpPgAdmin which uses the apache/php to let you access your postgresql database through a web browser (real handy since the only linux machine i've gotten in here so far - well, besides my personal laptop - is the one running the database ;-) ). So now our sales manager can now get accurate sales analysis information with just a few clicks in his browser, and the only programming was some database design, some extract programs on our as400, and some scripting to get the info from the as400 into the postgres - unless you you call writing some SQL queries "programming". BTW: we're also planning on getting our access databases moved over to this :-)

    umm Dead Kennedys? Lately they have gotten a clue and been telling parents to get a life and take their own responsibility, but way back when the Dead Kennedys disbanded rather than paying off the stupid lawsuit they lost.

    the technique you describe is actually used for detecting MACHOs in the galactic halo using the Large Magellenic Cloud as a background for source stars to be lensed. The other technique for exoplanet hunting is actually to watch an eclipsing red dwarf binary star system looking for a drop in brightness that is not one of the stars eclipsing the other. This method attempts to see the planet directly. The reason for looking at red dwarves is that they are small enough (radius) that an approximately earth-sized planet (radius, not mass) can cause an approximately 2% drop in brightness which is detectable with a ccd camera. The reason for specifying an eclipsing binary is to increase the chances that any planet that does exist would orbit so that it came between the stars and our telescopes (the stars are orbitting each other in a plane that is oriented so that the stars eclipse each other, any planets should be orbitting in the same plane.)

    ummm ... my first Linux install was my toshiba satellite notebook. Stick in the Mandrake 7.0 cd and let 'er rip .. no problems. did have to download the driver for the internal lucent winmodem (not hard to find) all worked great until I screwed around and blew the internal modem; so I went and bought 10/100 /v.90 pcmcia (I believe it was Linksys) was I let DrakX find and configure with no problems.
    I have had no trouble at all with running it. umm... this wouldn't be a compaq laptop you're trying to install on is it?

  9. Re:A quick question on Baby Black Hole With Big Appetite · · Score: 1

    My main problem with the area-entropy relation was that a large crystal would contribute less to the area of the horizon than a much smaller mass of, say, mud (mud being disorganised and all). This is loosely (sp) analogous to saying: Throw a deck of cards that are known to be ordered into a black hole. Now take an identical deck and shuffle them with Perfect Random Shuffler(tm). Then throw them in with the exact same energy. In case 1 the EH area will increase by less than in case 2 since there will be no entropic contribution from the randomness of the deck.
    umm, no. The relative entropy of the mass in question before entering the vicinity of the BH is not relevant because no matter what state it was in by the it reaches the BH it will be torn apart and reduced essentially to energy. Let's take a look at how this works;
    1) as the mass approaches the black hole it gains speed (energy) from the acceleration due to gravity.
    2) as it approaches the event horizon the speed is nearing c (speed of light), this is where the weird time related effects come in.
    3) the object stretches due to the gravitational differences along it's length.
    4) after passing the event horizon, the mass cannot hold together against the gravitational stresses and is shredded to constituent atoms
    5) at the singularity of the BH itself the atoms cannot even maintain cohesion. While not correct scientifically, I think of it that the mass finally gets converted completely to energy.

    So, the amount of entropy an object has as it approaches a BH has no relevance as the _mass_ of the object will get converted to entropy by what happens to it as it enters the BH.
