  1. Isn't death what a missile is supposed to cause? on Debug your Code, or Else! · · Score: 1

I'm sorry, I'm laughing hysterically at the phrase "...a US Patriot missile that caused 28 deaths because of accumulated floating point error". Sounds to me like the missile did exactly what it's designed to do - kill. The missile has no knowledge of who's side it's on, it just kills, maims, and destroys without conscience.

I did that and discovered the validator was parsing the "please go download lastest IE" page... so I went to msn.com in IE 6, saved the source code and uploaded that file to the validator. Funny results..... the actual source code given to IE 6 was also filled with errors. This ain't XHTML 1 strict... this is MSXHTML 1 crap. I had my suspicions about something like this happening once I found out IE 6 doesn't accurately support XML 1.0 ...it's close, but the XML spec requires full support in order for an app to claim support.

  6. Mozilla 0.9.5 still blocked at 10:40p eastern on MSN Blocks Mozilla, Other Browsers [updated] · · Score: 1

Wasn't there something at CNET about MS unblocking the browsers by the end of thursday? I realize i'm probably just picking on a tiny detail here and that where Redmond is, there's still another 4 hours 'til the end of the day... but come on, how difficult can it be to unblock browser strings? That's what, one line of code? One variable in a line? Being Opera & Mozilla are so close to W3C standards in so many ways, I'm SURE it wouldn't take very long to fix the problem. After all, according to the article at CNET (or was it the yahoo one?), MS said their code is pure W3C standard. So how hard is it? Maybe all their code is done procedurally and they have to change the browser string block code in a thousand places. *L* ....but I seriously doubt MS would code with such idiocy.

This whole thing seriously pisses me off.

Seems to me like some people expect perfection from the OpenBSD crew. Yeah, it's a root exploit, but there's certainly far less exploits for major damage on OpenBSD than any or most any other OS's. I don't understand how someone can complain about a patch coming out 6 days after starting work on it. Knowing what I know about the OpenBSD bunch, I wouldn't be surprised if it took 6 days because they wanted to be sure the patch would totally cover the problem without leaving a hole or causing another hole in the system somewhere. I'm still using OpenBSD as a prefered choice OS. Can't knock the soup or the cook, just because one bowl had a fly in it. BSD still rocks, especially when it's open.

We now have a case history to use in court if anyone gets in trouble. Think about that for a minute.

  11. Quebec law and Babelfish on Quebec language Police Fine English-Only Site · · Score: 1
If I remember correctly, Quebec province laws state that ANY business operating in the province, must use french AND english. This has been the law for many years - right or wrong. It's not like it's a new law, so the business owners had no excuse about it. With services like Babelfish, there's even less an excuse. It certainly doesn't take long to translate a bunch of english pages into french with a service like that. Especially when you can simply use a GET request URL, via babelfish, to translate the site.. and label the link something like "en français".

I don't agree with the agressiveness of the police on this matter either. They probably could've saved everyone time & money if they simply warned the business to comply with the laws by a certain time, instead of arresting them.

  14. BSD license on GPL 3.0 Concerns in Embedded World · · Score: 3

GPL has limitations due to grouping all code as open always. BSD can give a company the ability to open source, or keep the code secret...it's really the way to go IMHO. BSD supports freedom of indidviduality in that sense, and GPL is more like another `prison` even tho it's the opposite of proprietary licenses - which are also `prisons`. I can't see why a company would really want to use the GPL when there's some very good (and often slightly better) software and OS's using the BSD license. I realize it's a matter of taste, but in a legal and business sense....BSD really would be the way to go. It doesn't force you into as many corners.

I was able to import those bookmarks into the new ones, but then I couldn't quite manage all my bookmarks so they were all in the order I wanted them...it was weirder than it sounds. I'm actually using IE for the first time since late 1998....well, until they get their act together, or until Mozilla is ready for a real release. I like the nightly builds at least.

So I uninstalled it, and found it doesn't *really* get uninstalled (using Windows 98 SE for all this). So I went and installed the latest IE 5.5 SP1 instead, which says a lot...considering I'm running FreeBSD on my laptop these days. Ya know what I mean?
The Mozilla nightly builds are better. How could AOL even think this crappy version passed off as a commercially viable product would go over? I mean, they're not my favorite company, but they didn't get rich by releasing software they should've worked on for another month or two. It's been a long day...goodnight.
