  1. The Problem. on Will Instant Messaging Ever Unite? · · Score: 1

The problem is the AOL and MSN centralized servers that everyone logs into. In my opinion it is way worse that we are locked into horrible client interfaces that never evolve, additionally to the fact that we can't talk between services.

Napster was a centralized server, and that was replaced with the Gnutella network that has many client apps all competing against eachother and can't be shut down by the Music Monopoly (Industry.)

So please consider with me what it would take to make IM over a decentralized protocol. Seems gnutella with built in PGP certificates or SSH certificates would do the trick. Then changing the routing so that it goes along with our needs.

  4. Just rip off apple, like the old days! on What Should Microsoft's Open Source Strategy Be? · · Score: 1

MS should take linux and design a proprietary UI just like apple did with their darwin. Then MS could release "MS Windows/Linux 2004" and capitalize off the linux fame plus keep their Windows brand going. They could so easily design the UI as a window manager that users wouldn't even know the difference, and all us open source nerd would have our 'open hooded vehicle' of an OS so we can have good security and stop it from crashing. Additionally, more UI's can continue being integrated from the linux world for those who want better UI's, and then MS could just rip those ideas off too.

All microsoft wants anyways is to have their windows on every machine in the world so that all the companies keep up support contracts with them anyways, and so that Bill Gates can keep everyone beleiving he has all the power in the world. The whole thing is a big nike swoosh. Just change the engine for all us people who actually care, and let MS keep their fame. Everyone wins.

The reason MS won't do this is because they are worried about that chance that it could loosen their hold on the desktop, and the truth is, is that it will. But if they don't start opening up their software to evolution, they are going to loose EVERYTHING.

So so tired of the battle between jabber and aim.

Pretty soon we will be able to do User Location Queries over jxta that spread out just like gnutella file searches do. Centralized instant messsaging servers will be a way of the past, just like how gnutella eclipsed napster.

I've been thinking about breaking open a java gnutella client and hacking it to do simple chat rather then a file transfer, replacing file searches and replies with identity search and replies. All that would really need to be added is certificates to verify people are who they say they are.

Maybe a decentralized user location plugin for GAIM would do the trick ... hrmmm.

There is a chat client I found that already does direct peer-to-peer instant messaging, with full encryption. Identities are OpenPGP certificates. Only the decentralized user location is not there- (okay, kinda a big thing) - oh, and its not for linux either. Raxius Express(windows app)

Feedback on the whole decentralized user lookup is appreciated.

How is this really much different then a cookie? Why not just allow the user to store his data locally and allow behind firewall distribution with a preexisting decentralzed server network (jxta.)

While I'm at it, whats the big idea with User Location for user data and Instant Messaging. Why not just allow 128 public keys to be user location identifiers through a decentralized jxta real time location service. Chat - passport - decentralized. Am I missing something?
