Why, oh why, did this comment get modded up to a 5? Is it not a legit news item that there is a way to run an advanced gui web browser without X? Dare I say it's even bigger news than a point release of Nautilus?(albiet I LOVE Nautilus)
WTF are you talking about tirade? The KDE devoplers are acting like babies. There are some simple problems that were created by some KDE developers violating the GPL and RMS was pointing them out and basically saying, "forget about it, you are (LEGALLY) forgiven for any violations you made to OUR GPL'd code. And if you took others GPL'd code and incorporated it into KDE you violated the license, and you should talk to those developers so you can continue to legally distribute the code. The GPL is a LICENSE after all. Yeah that is an ugly word, but it is needed to make the GPL effective. If you don't like the GPL don't use it, if you like it, abide by it! The KDE deveoplers are crying like babies. "'Beg for forgivenes'" Where are they getting that from? Sounds like they're real bitter over the GPL and they're taking it out on RMS.
Where I work we had some Hitachi laptops that used to catch on fire because of some design flaw. No big deal really, nobody ever got hurt. So I can only imagine what might happen when something goes wrong inside one of these computers! I'd hate to be in the middle of typing a spreadsheet and suddenly my laptop dissappears out of existence, or worse yet, turns into a star!
Yep, that will be the wave of the future. It's all about revenue streams isn't it? What we're seeing here with Textbooks parallels very nicely with what's happening with software and music. The publisher's want their revenue streams to come in nice and effortlessly and to be as big as possible. But just like with software someone with enough smarts can create a "open" or Free "as-in-speech" textbook that can be distributed and improved upon and derived from, freely.
I don't really understand the craze we had/have over electric vehicles. Batteries are HEAVY. The more weight you move around, the more energy it costs. And our electrical power plants are spewing plenty of pollution into the air. If we want to decrease pollution and consumption of LIMITED fossil fuels, then the only solution is to decrease the amount of WEIGHT we are moving about the country. We can do this by transporting ourselves LESS, or decreasing the amount of weight that we transport WITH ourselves. Increasing the efficiency with which we get energy from our fossil fuels is also an option, but has a finite limit. For many of YOU, this will require changing your LIFESTYLE. You can already hear it in the discussion thus far, people do not want to change their comfortable lifestyles and it WILL ruin us in the end. Our ever-growing population is already pushing the limits of our earth's carrying capacity. Are we going to continue to push it? Population control may be the only answer! We are quickly consuming our limited resources away!!!
How about a XML standards for office docs like WP documents and spreadsheets? Is anything like that being considered? Imagine if we could start posting and trading full blown Word Procesing docs w/out having to give a $%#@# what programs everyone has. I've heard that because of the way XML works, a standard wouldn't be necessary because XML is so "descriptive" about it's contents. I say hogwash, there ought to be standard "office" document formats just like we have with SVG now. Then we can start embedding this stuff in our web pages without pissing anyone off! And if MS doesn't comply fsck 'em.
This jives with what I'd really like to see. A growing number of us are always connected to the net, even ahve our own servers. I'd like to see an personal finance app that stores all of its data on the web, and whose interface is HTML. I find it of little use to enter in all my finances and receiepts and then have all that data locked away in my home computer. It's important information that I'd like to be able to access as often as possible.
