  1. Not entirely surprised... on Best-Selling Author Refuses $500k; Self-Publishes Instead · · Score: 1

I've heard that self-publishing is particularly beneficial for well-established authors, whereas unknowns benefit quite a bit from the resources of a publisher to produce and distribute a first/early work. Though, IANAA(uthor) ;)

  2. Love that this is taking off... on New Film 'Zenith' Now Available For Free BitTorrent Download · · Score: 3, Informative

This film, Pioneer One and The Tunnel are all doing this, and it makes it seem like this is a potentially workable model. I hope the "buy a frame" and selling of merchandise make it financially viable... I'd love to see this become the norm. I was more than happy to buy a few frames for The Tunnel... as the money goes straight to the movie makers, and it still cost me less than a single traditional rental.

  3. A little crazy... on Former Goldman Programmer Sentenced To 97 Months · · Score: 4, Interesting

Pushing the code off to a free hosting service is highly questionable, even if he claims he meant to be moving OSS and screwed up. But wow... 97 months for "interstate transportation of stolen property"? If it's still the case that he didn't use or distribute that source, and even cooperated all along... that seems awfully harsh.

  4. Re:Are you armed? on Ask Slashdot: How Prepared Are You For a Major Emergency? · · Score: 1

I'd think that depends on where you are, that the vast majority of the local (human) population survives the disaster and following hysteria, is armed, and knows how to hunt. No? Either way, you're right. The defense of person and property might also be important, depending on the scale and location of the disaster.
