um, I bumped my machine with my knee one day, and the heatsink fell off 1 of the cpu's. MBM shut it down before it got out of hand (celly 533's take a little longer than a second to die)
What should have been done, in the heady days of overpriced stocks, is usability testing. RedHat, Corel, one of them should have started taking schwoobs off the street, and getting them to use linux and comment on the interface, as well as video taping *how* they use it.
The only way it will get on the desktop is a better interface - just as good is not enough for people to go through the hassle of learning.
I use Win2K. I haver played with Linux, but all my clients use win32, so that's what I develop to. I wish I could move enough to Linux to move to an alternative (and the authorization thing in winXP makes me run it down every chance I get). However, they won't, and if I don't supply win32 apps to them, I don't eat.
Some of you developers out there that are better than me (and there are lots, and many, many more worse than me), build the desktop that will bring them in. Not just a pretty desktop, but you need *compelling* money saving (making?) features that will make businesses move. Instant messaging - awesome business tool. Some kind of video conferencing - awesome tool. Icons that pop out (a la osX) - eye candy but useless. Bunches of rabid supporters that cannot conceive of somebody using an alternative without launching a personal attack - worse than useless. All the linux users out there have to remember that *they* are the alternative users.
Last bit is a rant - I have been flamed mightly for using Windows. But it is my fucking job, and I hate when people think I should give up work, let my family starve, etc, so I can go to the One True Operating System. (Hey, let's rename Linux OT/OS - heh)
Scaling walls is a good super power. Now lets get on scaling buildings in a single bound.

Well, I bumped my case one day with my knee, knocked one of the cpu sinks off - a celeron 533, not OC. Didn't make any noise until motherboard monitor started howling. CPU was going up 1`C/s until I got it shut down. Hit about 85`C, which is nice and toasty.
Got an automatic shutdown now - makes me feel better.
I would like to see a P4 sink that is screwed to the case (where they are supposed to be) fall off. Many amd sinks screw to the motherboard as well, so if it falls off, you likely are going to have more trouble with the ripped gashes where the screws came through than heat.
Um, I have 7 kids in my house, and *I* have not been the the hospital 10 times. In the last 365 days! The pediatric wait in saskatoon is about 30 minutes on a good day, the adult wards can be up to 4 hours, then you are seen by a resident that is so busy that they do an instant diagnosis, usually wrong, and leave immediatly.
My brother broke his finger, and the bone shifted in two dimensions (obvious statement) but the doctor only took an extra and reset it in 1. So 2 weeks later, when it still really fucking hurt, he went back and found the swelling was caused from the bone ends not touching each other vertically. Too busy to do the jobs right.
Welcome to Saskatchewan
Really. The main feature of these crops are that they are resistant to roundup (for those overly untanned urban types, it's a broad spectrum herbicide, kills everything). It's not like they are orange, or something, where you can just take a look.
This poor bastard lives about 2 hours drive from me.
I started making backups cause the kids would drop the fucking things on the floor and stick in another, resulting in about 10 unplayable 50 dollar games.
Now if I could go to the manufacturer and say "Look, this game does not work anymore, can I get a free replacement, or one for the dollar it costs for a blank cd" I would be interested. It's not like I can make that black polycarbonate on them - they will know it's theirs.
Of course, the game ended up dying, and based on how fragile it was, I got a N64 instead. The kids could probable microwave those cartridges without harm. If I played more than, say, an hour a year, I might get a ps2 for myself. But I far prefer playing games on the computer. Much more control.
Yeah, like the dumb bitch that accidently drove through a stop sign into three lanes of oncoming traffic in front of me one day. Slammed on her brakes and stopped, when "punching" it would havew just shot her through the intersection with time to spare.
Just sat and watched her scream with her hands over her mouth while my 2 ton car smoked to a stop beside her door.
I never hit the car, but I was extremely close - close enough that I got out and checked, since the nose up when the car actually stopped was so violent I thought I might have clipped her.
I will tell you the story of the blind intersection and the train some time. Nothing like an alley (with a 10 km limit, no less - remember that when the limit is enforced) crossing a track when you can't see until you are stuck out enough to be hit - have to listen. And not all trains are loud.
On the other hand, I bet you can really rock going down a service road alongside a highway!
Also, red tends to be less absorbed (hence red sunsets - longer path through the atmosphere absorbs the shorter wavelengths). A blue gigawatt laser would be awesome for heating the air out to about, say, a mile. Likely get a thundercrack out of it. And get to fly though it:-)

I also suspect that a "kill" against the missle would not be hard - you are either attacking a thin radome, or blinding a IR sensor. It's aspect to the plane would not change much, as the missle is trying to fly in a straight line to the plane.
On the other hand, the software will likely only be developed to attack ballistic missles for now. Just wait for version 2.0 though!
If I remember correctly, that is exactly what happened in Britan. First a registration scheme, then confiscation. Oh, that old family heirloom mauser - give it here so we can crush it...
Yes. It is actually f=mv^2. Very different, considering that these things are whipping around and the 30,000 (17,000 mph) kph range. Another interesting point is whether or not the thing is solid, a lump of gravel, porous. Very important to know how it's going to react when we hit it.
An interesting question is what would happen if it shattered? Would a shotgun blast of material be as lethal at a large stone?
I wish I had mod priviledges - that was the funniest thing I have seen in weeks
