  1. Enough Enterprise on Rick Berman Doesn't Know Why Nemesis Tanked · · Score: 2, Interesting

I've been a Trek fan for over 25 years. I do love the TV shows but the movies are lacking. I think we've all had enough of Enterprise being 'the only ship that can save/defeat/whatever whoever.

The focus needs to change. What I would like to see for the next movie is an in-depth account of the final battle with the Dominion. They could show the leadup and the actual battle from all sides (Federation, Klingon, Romulan, Cardasian, etc.).

Get away from the plodding one-on-one battles and do a full engagement.

  2. Fuel Monopoly on Ford Shows Off Recyclable Car · · Score: 0

Every time I see a 'new concept' car, there is one thing missing from all the hoopla: the economic research of the fuel.

Ford says they're talking to BP about mass producing hydrogen. This is only one company. Why aren't they talking to others? Not to mention once they figure it all out either oil companies will retain their monopoly over car fuel just by changing their product or a few companies suddenly get the monopoly thru inovation and the patent office (don't think that BP won't try to stop anybody and everybody from refining hydrogen once THEY get their ideas going)

Oil companies have been keeping highly inefficient 'dino-fuel' engines around alot longer then should have because they didn't want to give up ANY of their 'pie'. Oil companies will be happy to give up gasoline power now ONLY if they can have the exclusive rights to supplying the new fuel (whatever it turns out to be).

In 50s(?) there was a guy who invented a carburetor(sp?) that could get 50 miles/gallon. An oil company bought all the research & rights from him and destroyed it. Keep the money rolling in and to hell with the enviroment.

These are not the people we want having anything to do with alternative fuel vehicles.

Before car companies start putting in all the happy fuzzy options, widely accessable fuel that doesn't need manufacturing should be found. Otherwise we'll wind up with the same problem: innovation and invention controlled by companies that only have their profits & monopolies in mind and nothing else.

  3. International Been there, Done that on 11 Digit Dialing Comes Home to New York · · Score: 0

When thr first 2 came into play, there was a recording that would play if you forgot to put the area code while dialing. The tone of the recording was very close to a parent displining a child for a repeated mistake! I believe it was changed after a local radio station (famed for doing musical parodies) got into the act!

Correct me if I'm wrong but since the RIAA has admitted to infecting the general populace(sp?), aren't they guilty of malicious coding and liable for any damage incurred? (don't think there's an end-user agreement for a worm...)

What do the numbers really represent?

From what little I know of Linux (I will be going over after 20+ years with Microsoft) it's rather hard to break security or get a virus to do anything. I understand it depends on the 'state' of Linux at the time (who's logged in, etc).

I would rather run Linux with more security holes than Windows if those holes are hard to find and even harder to exploit.

Switch to Linux or Unix. From what I can remember, only 2-3 virus/worms have been made for these operating systems and even then they didn't do any real damage. Why? Because the people who created Unix/Linux where driven by good programming, not the all mighty dollar.

  13. Everything GOOD about DS9??? on Andromeda To Become Less Complex? · · Score: 1

What was good about DS9? It was, is and always will be one of the worst Star Trek series because of two things:

    1. It wasn't an orginial Star Trek idea. Paramount's execs saw Babylon 5 when when all the new shows were shopping themselves around to the networks for the fall schedule.THEY decided that was when they wanted the next Start Trek series to be.

    2. Way, way, way too much religious junk! At least with Babylon 5 it was different religoins. With DS9 it was always Bagoran this, Bagoran that. It has to be something like 50% of the episodes have some sort of Bagoran religious crisis or something dug out of the Cardasian occupation.

This is the only Star Trek series that had heavy soap-opera type storylines.

Before I sign off, I will say that there are a few good DS9 episodes. The one where Sisko leads the life of a black story writer in the 40s and the one when Morn fakes his death comed to mind as some memorable episodes. But considering how many episodes there are and those are the only two I can think of kinda prooves my point...

In British Columbia (as well as other areas, I'm sure)if a theif slips on some ice while breaking into your home, he can sue for damages. In the 80's a theif successfully sued a car owner for putting razor blades on his car stereo and caused the theif to loose 2 fingers.

Blowing up your speakers (which couls also do damage to whatever they're hooked up to) as well as inconvienence, trama (from the 'explosion), public embarasment (if it happens while you're hosting a party or blowing someone else's system if you lend the CD to someone)could equal a very large and nasty lawsuit.

If you can sue for your coffee being too hot, why not go for the gusto?

  16. Psychological Factors on Making Strategy Games with...Strategy? · · Score: 1

One thing I think RTS games should take into account is the effect of the battles & battle stratagies that are used. For example:

In Command & Conquer, to avoid getting your base bombed during the missions you would station one unit to the upper left of your base. The AI would always attackt the upper-left most unit. Good stratagy to avoid damage but if you take into account that after a few times your units would be shaking in their boots after each bombing run wondering if they were next!! This (of course) leads to breakdown of morale and possibly defections.

I noticed in Tiberian Sun that units gain 'rank' as they survive battles (betters shots, sight, etc). It could work that the higher the rank, the more hardened the veteran.

    HOWEVER,

If we are taking about a fantasy/space style RTS, use the race. In Warcraft, the Orc grunts and other low level units are rather dim so throwing 10-20 of them at a line of archers as a suicide divertion wouldn't really effect the overall morale of the pack.

I think just putting this to work in any RTS would create some really good stratagy gaming.

  17. oooooooh! Downloadable movies... on Rent A Downloadable Movie · · Score: 1

Anybody heard of WinMX or other deriviatives?

Why would up waste your time downloading a movie that's already in video stores, has a time limit on viewing and will eventually corrupt itself (hopefully just itself!) when you can download a movie that just been released to theaters and usually is less that 500Mb?

True the quality sometimes sucks but there are screener copies that float around (those are usually the first ones on the trading block)

I've had WinMx for about 3 weeks now. I have about 20 movies ranging from older ones like Men in Black (ripped from the DVD) up to Final Fantasy, Planet of the Apes & Osmosis Jones. The last three i got about 2 days after being released to theaters!

I know alot of people will say "WinMx will eventually go the way of Napster and either start charging or will be taken out entirely." I went from Napster to Imesh to BearShare to WinMx. Th last three handled all file types (music, movies, programs).

I've been a tech for 22+ years and it's the same thing over and over again: push down on one hacker/cracker/copywrite violator and 5 more pop up. I guess eventually the RIAA and movie industry will understand that they lost the war before they noticed they were in one.
