Your are quite right. That is a very possible future. Too bad that those with power to do something about it will probably be too _greedy_ to do so, and miss the creative solution readily availabe to remedy. I will explain it though, just in case they are listening.

A small surcharge is added to my internet bill. My surfing is securely monitored, and dependent on the view-ratio of the sites I visit, so divided is this surcharge among those sites. The monitoring of my site preference tailors traditional-like embedded ads on web pages, which also have the more appropriate traditional non-per-click ad fees. With this system in place the Internet economy would fair quite well --and be a complete boon to our economy.

The basic idea has already been put forth by others for P2P networks and their trading of copyrighted materials, I am merely generalizing the concept to the whole of the internet. But you can call it Trans' Marshal Plan, if you like ;)

  8. Re:It's not the insurance companies on Medical Care Gets Outsourced Too · · Score: 1

It *is* the insurance companies. But not for the reasons you expect.

Inusrance companies pool money. Thus they defer expenditure from the actual consumer. It's easy to spend other people's money. So prices naturally go up and up.

While insurance is understandable for life-and-limb situations --without any other form of safety net. But it can't be applied to everyday usage. It doesn't work. Which is why a person in the United States *has* to have insurance just to afford any care (did you know, they charge more if don't have insurance!)

In every field, where insurance has become a norm, prices have risen. If you want to fix the health care system in America simply outlaw non-life-or-limb medical insurance. Period. Prices would drop almost overnight.

And, no, the argument that prices would remain high and no one would be able to afford anything doesn't work, b/c that's a fundemental misunderstanding of economics. Where there is a consumer, so to the producers go.

    Think about that.

  18. 1st Memory = Birthday on What's Your Earliest Memory? · · Score: 1

I have done some investigation in this myself, as the question of memory is of interest to me as well.

first of all, memory is not tied stricty to language. (ideas are pre-symbolic) but memory and Self are strictly linked. without memory one can have no conception of ones own existence. Thus your first memory is essentially your first day of existence -- your actual Brithday.

my fist memory, my birthday, occured when i was around 2 or 3 and i recall looking at a small blue flame --a furnace pilot light. i stuck my hand in that furnace and burnt the hell out of myself. i still have a scare. thus for me it was pain that triggered the neural dynamics to reflect upon my own being: Self as something seperate from Other.

i wonder how much this particular trigger carries on into the rest of our life. in my case, the trigger being by pain, i wonder if pain is therefore my modus operandi in relating to the world.

for you, it had something to do with moving and a new language. it would be interesting to know how those aspects have played out in the rest of your life.
