Polymorphism is a single tool in the belt and doesn't replace switch statements.
Although I agree every instance of a switch statement can probably be implemented with polymorphismc some times you will end up with a worse design using polymorphic solutions that haven't placed enough emphasis on encapsulation and connascence. Options are good.

If all of your interfaces are internal then that is probably a valid solution. Unfortunately RMI is a pain in the ass when working with external vendors and suppliers. Web Services using XML work better in that situation.

Internally, we use XML rather than RMI because it's easier for us to document the contract between teams using XML. I admit there is some overhead converting between java and XML, but whenever we have interoperability issues we can review the XML to resolve disputes.

My bet is that it would quickly become integrated into mail servers and users would never know.

I have a tough time understanding this argument. What value does the Java brand have? I think Sun's biggest problem is that they have sunk a ton of resources in java but haven't been able to successfully capitalize on it as much as other companies (IBM, BEA). What additional value does IBM get by "owning" java? Nobody uses Sun's java products, except on Sun hardware. WebLogic and WebSphere are far better J2EE implementations and I still trust IBM's JVM over Sun's.

It seems to me that if you are uninfluencable (how's that word?) then you are unwilling to listen to reasonable debate or alternative positions on important matters.

Perhaps you feel Americans are too easily influenced by television commercials, politicians, etc.?

Saying Europeans are uninfluenced reinforces a stereotype we have that most Europeans are unwilling to keep up with the times and prefer living in the "old days" rather than competing. I'm pretty sure that wasn't your intention.
