Actually I've found the "you get it cheaper" aspect is no longer true. Mainly because the parts I want cost more than the crap parts in a pre-built systems. Granted that's a good thing and I do, however, feel I get more value for the money.

I used to build PCs for people on the principle that I could build it cheaper than the OEMs and make a little cash off the deal. That's generally not true anymore and I just recommend people to compare Dell vs. Gateway and get whatever suits them best.

I think that would be a horrible clause to have rolled into a free software license. Free software only on a free OS is so limiting to the open source community. It would take away the exposure you get from running free software in a closed business world.

As has been stated, Apache is a fine example of this. You take away Apache's right to run on microsoft, etc. operating systems and you reduce exposure. As it stands now you have real world manager types and businesses in general looking at a very successful open source project and possibly changing the attitude that free == suck.

I understand what you're saying. But I still don't think you're correct. I'll have to do some research to verify. But I'm in the same situation as you. My Jeep Cherokee has both a full time (awl) and part time (4wd) modes. But I believe this has more to do with the way the transfer case handles the dual drive lines. NOT the way the differentials are set-up. Like I said, very few stock vehicles come with locking differentials.

  10. Re:Not on a 4wd on Got Tracks? · · Score: 1

This is not true in a general sense. Most stock 4WD vehicles do not incorporate locking diffs. This is usually and after market thing which people add for increased traction. They aren't good in many situations such as trying to turn a corner on an icy road. The locking diff will just push you striaght on through rather than pull you around the corner. There is still a problem with axle binding in a standard 4WD vehicle. But I can't remember exactly where the problem occurs.

I have never submitted anything from CDDB and usually turn the feature off when I find it do to the pause I usually get when it has to go access the internet for info.

I keep hearing from the slashdot crowd about how Gracenote is trying to take over the data as their own property when it rightfully belongs to those who submitted it. While excuse me if I'm wrong but isn't the CDDB just a listing of song titles and album names? (I know there are some additional things now, but that's not the primary purpose here) And aren't those song titles and album titles rightfully the IP of the bands/record labels that came up with them in the first place? All you users which entered data into CDDB. Didn't you just crab your CD covers and input exactly what was written? So how does this give rights to the one who submitted the entry?

I would agree that Gracenote has no right to call the content their own. But I don't think the submitters have any more rights to it. I do, however, agree that Gracenote has rights to defend their service. They pay for the servers, bandwidth, development/enhancement of infrastructure, etc. They have a right to charge for that stuff.

What I find confusing about this open letter is that they don't mention FreeDB at all. They only mention Roxio trying to use their service without paying. I'm thinking we don't have the full story yet. It just doesn't make sense that they'd go after Roxio for using FreeDB. There's more to this than meets the eye.

There are good reasons to run either linux or solaris depending on your situation. I'm not saying one is best for all situations over the other. In the past cost would have been a huge factor in choosing. Now that Solaris can be downloaded it's not as much of an issue. However some people are simply more comfortable with linux and have no desire to learn Solaris. Why should those people that ask for support with Linux on Sparc put up with the stupid knee jerk question of "Why would you want to do that?" every time they open their mouths.
