  1. Re:Terrorism??? on Further Updates On Terrorist Attack · · Score: 1
you're a fucking moron if you ever think that ANY American group would allow 10,000+ american citizens be killed...

Of course the US is vulnerable to kamakazi attacks from commercial airlines... just like any city without an active air defense system within their borders that doesn't shoot down civilian aircraft...

  2. Re:2nd plane on Further Updates On Terrorist Attack · · Score: 1
I've been watching the coverage since I got home at 4pm est (I live in Arlington, VA)...

I did see the interview with the reporter from USA Today, but there was ABSOLUTELY NOTHING about a second plane of any kind involved in that... and he described the last 5-10 seconds before the collision in detail... and i've seen it on different stations/angles and he's never mentioned it...

Who ever is updating the post has no clue...

At that site, it has a picture of the Washington Mall buring (the area between the Smithsonians, the Capital, and the Wash Monument for non-Washitonians) supposedly from cnn... oh, and for those not from the area, the pentagon is not within DC, it's in virginia jsut across the river...

Now, it seems if this truly happened, it would be mentioned SOMEWHERE in cnn's timeline of events... that part is a hoax!

If you want to do something useful, call your local blood bank or hospital and see if they're accepting donations... or start contacting churches and see if they could use a hand getting together care packages...

The only bloodbanks around Arlington, Va that are accepting blood is Alexandia and somewhere called Fair Oaks... I'm going to go give a pint.

Alright, I work in DC for a government contractor., so our people have been in contact with each other directly after evacuating safely from all federal job sites. There have been a total of 4 crashes..

two in nyc, one at the pentagon (none of our people were there), and in pennsylvannia...

there have been no bombing and no other crashes at this time... camp david was not hit and neither was the state department..

most of the internet "news sources" have been useless today because of being overwhelmed or complete and total lies abounding...

Imagine if apartment complexes began offering this as a simple perk to residence... Yes, we'll let you pay an additional 10/month to rent this card that will allow your computer to have wireless internet access...

Then you need a few techies to be willing to help set up the system... i know that i would be willing to accept a modest rent decrease in order to help supply some of the basic setup... for the long term, another solution would be required, but it's a nice way to start...

This is probably a small victory in the direction of workspace liberties, but is it a correct one?

I work for a consulting firm that does a great deal of work for the government. If I'm surfing porn or whatever during their time, then that's not a legitimate use.

Mass downloading on the other hand is something else entirely. As I type, I have slackware 8.0 downloading and I regularly listen to streaming radio feeds while I'm doing my work. Those are the uses that I think are the most important. IMHO, It's no different from having the radio on or listening to a cd.

Just think of the market share possibilities and the PR possibilities that would result!

MS PR: "No, we're not a big, bad company, we're trying to reach these poor rural areas and be able to teach them the computer skills that will make the global players... yada yada yada..."

While they're not only getting positive spin for this, but creating an ENTIRE country of solely MS trained computer users... not to mention that if most of these places don't have internet (and slashdot) access (like it says in the article), they'll have very little clue that there are other OSes out there, let alone be able to download one of them...

The whole "anonymous donation" of computers to "every home with children" to Crete that's going on right now, smells like a MS marketing scheme in the making...

Maybe all of those vba, vbs, etc virii could phone home with reg numbers, ip addresses, and a few .doc's with the word memo in the filename (just to get some actual names)...

just think of what fun the BSA & M$ could have with that... "download the latest patch or we'll know that you (MIGHT) have pirated something!!"

    just some food for thought

  9. your missing something on Text to Speech Software Copies Any Human Voice · · Score: 1

In the article it says that to imitate a voice, the system needs to have 10-40 hours of studio recordings to base the creation off of... That makes this fine for regular people who aren't recording hours of stuff... it makes it bad for actors and celebs who ahve numerous public statements, movies, interviews, auditions, etc recorded around somewhere... though James Earl Jones reading me my email would be cool...

  10. this makes no sense... on Could Eminent Domain Break The RIAA Stranglehold? · · Score: 2

come on... "Under the doctrine of eminent domain, the government may declare a piece of land necessary for public use and then simply take the land -- as long as it pays the landlord a reasonable price" how does this apply to any of the music that was ever traded on napster? if this is going to be argued, can't the riaa and they're group say that much of this music is freely available on the airwaves, mtv (when they play music), etc?

  11. Re:Mmm... on Tivo/ReplayTV Are To TV What Napster Is To Music? · · Score: 1

Now imagine if you couple this with something like the DivX;) compression scheme. Suddenly you can get an entire season of the Simpsons on one CD. I'd pay $20 for that. What happens when DVD burners come more into the mainstream? Now we get the entire Simpsons series onto a dvd. Doesn't sound that far fetched, does it?

  12. Re:Why I don't vote on Online Voting? · · Score: 1
I'm sick of hearing "oh, my vote doesn't matter" from the 2 million people out there. I have one thing to say:

    PUT UP OR SHUT UP.

Until all of you get off your butts and go out there and try, you don't know. Did you know that when Jessie Ventura was running, there was the biggest turnout of 18-25 year olds EVER?

Maybe the libertarian candidate won't win, but by casting that vote for him/her it sends a message to those currently in control and it shows that atleast someone believes in that cause.

To get people to figure out that there are alternatives, it simply takes some news worthy events. If voters started turning out in droves for a single candidate (not one of the big two), then the world would have to take notice.

  13. Re:Details on the online voting at RPC on Online Voting? · · Score: 1

In order for online voting in itself to be a "fair representation of the public", someone will have to find out exactly who is online. Then, they have to cross reference with some sort of database to make sure people don't vote twice. What about entire families that share an internet connection? Personally, at my school, I know of numerous apartments where all of the roommates share a single dsl, cable or even (rarely) a dial up. How would they differentiate? Even if there is a password system, that means that everyone who wants to vote will have to get online during this time period to cast a vote. Latencies? Finally, what's to keep them from deciding that since voting online is so much (insert your benficial word here, ie. cheaper, faster, easier), that they just get rid of real polling places? I'm sure glad that the poor or those lacking in computer skills won't be able to vote. Let freedom ring...
