This submission is in light of a new Facebook feature that went live rather recently, so the it's actually quite fitting. The title of this submission is most likely a summary of the featured blogger. What's wrong with an opinion or two here and there? I see 'em all the time, yep, even in/. submissions.
Actually I take that back, I see them all the time.
It's spec'd at around a $1400 normal gaming rig (that's being generous). It sure looks cool though. Thin too. You have to wonder how good the cooling system is on that thing...
I'll stick to gaming on a desktop for now, thanks.
Alas, poor CmdrTaco! I hardly knew him, Rob, a fellow of infinite
loops, of most excellent timeliness. He hath posted/. articles a
thousand times, and now gone he is!
Take care, Rob, thanks for all the great articles and the wonderful techie nerd experience here. You helped draw me into/. and I hope it continues on its merry way. Live long and prosper!
Personally, I am of the belief that this should be settled via some intense Quake 3 tourney play. Just claim it's a match over the JScrollPane class, or something.
Yes, I know you were joking. But I agree, it's easy to abuse feedback, especially since this service only deals in tiny, relatively unimportant phone calls. However, feedback abuse is relatively uncommon wherever I go, but again, over a service that's "just a phone call", it's bound to have issues. Places like Amazon and Ebay have much less trouble with this due to well-established high standards (relatively speaking) and more product worth (people are more willing to rave or rant about products that are quite awesome or awful), even moreso since there is lots of review activity there.
Perhaps a way to mitigate this would be to offer sound samples for each potential waker that are verified as recorded on the spot by the person uploading them (if only there was some way to verify them). Potential wakers would record themselves speaking through a microphone and the website would then upload it. Unfortunately, even that has limitations.
In any case, I can see how people would abuse this kind of system (screaming to wake someone up instead of gently calling to the sleeper, playing immature sounds, etc.), but it's definitely a step in the right direction. This will be interesting to watch unfold.
Does the IPad[2] have flash? No
Might this be regarded by some people as a feature, rather than a missing feature? Yes.
Who would find this to be a feature? Especially considering you don't have to install flash on any tablet that has it.
Steve Jobs seems to be pushing the iPad as the "post-PC" device with limitations. These limitations are called 'features' on purpose because he claims it's part of the process needed to move away from the PC and onto more smoothly integrated features, thus doing away with the "clunkier" PC.
And since Apple calls all the shots as to what's cool and what's practical and people follow like a herd of sheep, it'll work and Apple will rake in more money.
Is it just me, or is Google actually trying to get things back on track here? Now that they own Motorola, after dealing with all the patent lawsuit crap and all the dust settles, this will be a great opportunity for more peaceful smart phone development and deployment. In one swift motion, Google has cut the need for striking deals with Motorola (problem, licensing?) and can now safely develop for Motorola phones.
Seems to me like locking down a phone manufacturer is a smart move, as they can now focus on making Android more polished and smooth (as it has been criticized for, compared to the iPhone interface).
Ex: Apache, the most popular and very secure web server.
Oh, well excuse me for referring to the operating systems that most everyone uses on a daily basis on personal computers. Which this article is, as you may or may not know, primarily about.
Considering the phenomenal market share Windows holds in the computer usage domain, no doubt there will be problems. Regardless of whether or not the Windows security model you speak of is broken or not, Its security problems are there for Apple to observe.
AFAIK, the same argument could be made for American chocolate vs. European chocolate. Ignorance is bliss, they say.
Cheese, Grommit! Cheese!
And if you don't get that reference, then you haven't lived or you didn't grow up in the right generation.
That's Wolfenstein 3D, but nice try. ;)
Whoosh...
;)
Actually, the point was that this was happening in Germany, and Germany used to be home to the Nazis, but nice try.
I did nazi that coming!
And now I bet someone stole it, and will sell it to some unsuspecting everyperson for $60. I smell another interesting stolen goods story!
Just throw a Master Ball, problem solved. I'm sure they'd try to use one of the cheap plastic ripoffs that's made in China, though.
Additional Pokemon/Slashdot pun for good measure: China used Asteroid Mining! Bitcoins scattered everywhere!

Check your pants.
That'll be one +1 Obvious, please.

Would that one Like happen to be yourself?

I like how people are whining about the single-window view, even though it's a mode of viewing, meaning it's not the only way to run GIMP.
Also..."the GIMP"? Is that a hipster term for GIMP, or something?
They are already working to remove the version numbering, whether it's for better or for worse.

The actual document leak was a surprise. Everything else is something we all expected.
This, although I don't think it's as surprising as it is facepalm-worthy.
You have claimed that popularity of OS increases the amount of successful attacks.
Pardon? Please quote me on that claim.
This means (if you are too thick to notice) that you are wrong.
Thanks, I'm sure you feel better about yourself now. Give yourself a pat on the back.
My mistake, I had only skimmed the original article. Servers are mentioned. But no need to get all RAWR about it, bro.
NO.

...the last sentence in the summary makes sense. Not so sure about the rest...
How will this patent acquirement go? Only time will tell.
Now it's very clear that anyone with an internet connection can hack. No real skills needed!
