  1. what the real problem is: on Voices From The Hellmouth 4 · · Score: 2

being a recent high school graduate, AP computer science student, and all around bus-riding, k-mart clothes wearing, industrial music listening geek, i think this entire story is bullshit.

sure, i didn't have all the money to afford a fancy car, fuck, i didn't even have my drivers license until a year after i graduated from high school. i listened to marilyn manson. i didn't wear abercrombie and fitch. i hated "the man".

    but...
i was friends with most of the football team, the senior prom queen was a good friend of mine. i went to football games but during my study halls and lunches, you'd find me in good old room 109, the main computer lab. i think the problem here is kids that want to be different just for the sake of being different. every time i hear somebody say "non-conformist" it makes my skin crawl. why? not because i don't respect what they do, it's because i don't respect why they do it. they aren't being different because they enjoy what they're doing - they are being different because they enjoy being different. they like to be able to call themselves "non-conformists". i also think there is a trend among such 'non-conformists' to label the ones that they see as 'conformists' as being inferior to them. how many times has one of the 'non-conformists' started complaining about the way their school works, and spitefully brought up the actions of the jocks? happens almost every time. the jocks are "the man" in the opinion of these non-conformists. they are popular, so they are intellectually inferior, the story goes. fuck that.

all we need is a little love in the world :)

just think, slashdot is free. there are no guarantees anywhere that one of the authors isn't going to go out and enjoy the big blue room. we are human we are allowed to make mistakes. perhaps this author thought that the story deserved more attention. perhaps he had never seen it. perhaps he just wanted to post it again. it's his decision.

if you people have a problem with slashdot, just stop coming. it'd make it much more enjoyable.

i for one am glad they reposted this article, as i wanted to read more about what the hard core techs at slashdot thought about it's feasibility as a commercial product, and how hard this hack is.

moral of story: if you have a problem with slashdot's authors, either filter them out or go somewhere else. i hate whiners.

Why? Even if you hate linux, a stripped down operating system streamlined for games doesn't require as much resource overhead, and therefore will run smoother.

Now, my opinion is that Microsoft should look more into creating a stripped down OS for the desktop, rather than repackaging the PC with the X-Box. Then, if you wanted anything else (joy stick port, TV out, etc) MS could release addons for it, rather than making you pay the full price for a castrated PC. IT'd be cheaper, and run well too. (I do recognize the fact that you could run into problems being that PC's aren't as standardized and self contained, but I think we could get around that)

that was the point to having prospective TLD owners submit 'intended use' reports. taco couldn't just take over .microsoft, unless the central governing group (which could be made up of ICANN and other TLD controllers) deemed their 'intended use' to be one that kept the internet free and unadulterated. that would keep cybersquatters from buying up all the TLD's as possible, as they'd have to answer to both ICANN and their peers.

  23. pro/con/fook icann on Froomkin Examines ICANN Legitimacy · · Score: 3

while having a centralized power for assigning names and numbers helps the internet from fragmenting into proprietary networks, i think that we could come up with a better way of running this. i don't want the people running the ICANN to have any political agenda. I just want them to keep things running smoothly. Taco wants his .dot (presumably for slashdot.dot/slash/) so why do we have to wait for these people to approve it? what it think the icann should be doing is giving out TLD's to organizations who apply for them (say Taco were to send in a request for control of ".dot" stating why ".dot" would be a necessary addition, or different than .com or any other TLD's, and what his intended use of the TLD is, who he's going to let use it, etc.) And then, people looking for a domain could then register through the TLD owner (if i wanted dotdotdot.dot, i'd have to go through taco) and all the ICANN's job would be is making sure that people stuck to their intended uses of their TLD's, and read peoples requests for control over TLD's. This way, there'd still be a centralized standard system, but it'd allow for more domains, and less power in the hands of ICANN, who seemingly has a political agenda. it would force a system of checks and balances, which i don't see today.
