  1. Religous prime directive on Vatican Astronomer Comments On Extraterrestrials · · Score: 2, Interesting

Just thinking.. suppose we were advanced enough to be able to travel between the stars and came across another civilisation who were just making it into space, what decides whether we make contact or not.

This is kind of a prime directive situation, where a major factor would probably be how religious that civilisation is. Somebody weighing this with us would probably think that religion has too much control and it would almost certainly mean war. They wouldn't want that so they back off and leave us to evolve.

My problem with this method was that during my degree I looked forward to the pissup after handing in a coursework so much that when I didn't have it finished in time I still went out and celebrated. In my final year I was lucky to hand in any courseworks on time, the punishment for handing in late (-5%/day) was far outweighed by getting sloshed in the uni bar with my mates.

"New Labour" here in the UK appear committed to mass-producing corporate drones with as little individuality as possible, and at the lowest possible cost - our Education services are woefully underfunded and stretched to the limits.
As a result of 17 years of tory mismanagement. Labour are trying to make things better without increasing taxes <sarcasm>as we know money in our pocket is better than decent public services</sarcasm> (by the way that's a dig at all political parties - with the exception maybe of the lib dems). Labour have failed to put it right in the 4 years they've had, but what do you expect when the destruction was drawn out over a much longer period.

if we do buy this MS processor, in the light of the recent DeCSS trial MS could by all means disallow us from writing alternative software (OS's) to run on the processor, even though it surely counts as fair use to use any os we want.

    Maybe that's their master plan.

    1. Microsoft launches a processor and an operating system to run on the software. The tv BSOD's every 20 mins ut nobody minds as we can reboot during the commercials.
    2. Linux then gets ported to use the processor and allows people to keep their tv on for months on end.
    3. Microsoft sues Linus Torvalds and the coders who did the porting, stating that linux is aiding piracy by allowing the tv to communicate with other proper computers and therefore allow people to tape off the webtv.

I think it is very possible to teach yourself a lot in the computing area, but it is also to make mistakes, and IMHO non-grads are more likely to make those mistakes because they don't have lecturers and other grads pointing them out when they do.

For the various classes of degrees you will probably find that the corresponding number of 'dumbs' increases the lower the degree classification, and the number of exceptions will decrease proportionally too.

I am sure you'll still get dumbs getting firsts, and by dumbs I mean lacking general computing ability. Some people can listen to instructions and follow them to the letter every time, but if they are expected to use their common sense and computing ability they fail because nobody has told them exactly how to do it, hence frying the motherboard.

This is what I have found too, althought it always seems to be the sheer number of programming tasks and Sys admin stuff that fills up my list. Often although I think I have coders block it is the exact opposite.

Suppose you are listening to a piece of music, if you then turn on the tv as long as they are of similar volume you can happily distinguish between the two. If someone then turns on the hoover and there's noise from outside then you still should be able to distinguish the sounds (althought you may not here what the tv is actually saying). But at some point if you keep adding new sound sources you will be unable to pick out the music and the tv, the room will just be full of noise.

Now this is what I imagine inside my head when I get coders block. A mush of ideas and solutions fighting for processor time in my brain. It isn't that I can't think of answers its just there are so many.
