    Actually, it was originally "Liberté, égalité, fraternité ou la mort".

    There fixed that for ya.

    The "ou la mort" part was dropped shortly thereafter as it was felt to be to strongly associated with the Reign of Terror.

    I was able to type this in MS Office 2007, LibreOffice and OpenOffice . I then cut and pasted this into Slashdot.

    Really? A piece of crap? If I ignore the 'prettiness' of MS Office and concentrate on what 90% of my co-workers need, LO wins hands down.

    With one big, glaring exception; an Outlook-like replacement.

    LO needs something that has a fully integrated email client, a pre-built contact list ( internal listing ) and a scheduler. Yes, I know there are other open source answers to these things, but I am talking abut it being an integrated component of LO.

    Okay, LO's version of PowerPoint needs a little help. Okay. A lot of help.

    Actually, the Crusades were a result of fear.

    The Christians feared the increasing incursions of the Arabs into the West and banded together to push back the invaders. The best way to do that is to attack their homeland.

    What was done to the Arab people during the Crusades was no better or worse than what the Arabs invaders did to the Christian people. That is not a justification of what was done, but it helps to understand why thing happen.

    The fear of Islam, rational or not, is still ingrained into the minds of the Christians. They are not sure why they should fear Islam, but they know they are to be feared.

    As a developer, there is only so much I can do. And I really do not want calls in the middle of the night. If I can describe how to install my software to a production support team, then the software release isn't ready for production.

    Okay, then.

    Is there any open source software that I can use/modify that will allow me to screw with that data collection? In other words, make stuff up, change it and/or send out repetitive and incorrect information? Maybe build a huge pile of useless information that looks good to the trackers, but hides the 'real' me. Can I make myself undesirable to those that want to track me?

    I do that now, with all of my email. Of course, it comes across as garbled garbage to my friends. Not that they would notice the difference as the garbage I write in emails is only slightly less crappier than what I post on Slashdot.

    Anybody else remember the SNL commercial spoof of the Trac II. They showed a razor with three blades. I can't stop snickering when I pass the five blade shaving systems in the store. I was truly frightened when I saw that one of them took batteries.

    I have six accounts in all. Only two are even remotely real. One has all the usual crap, the second is scrubbed for use with potential employers. The other four were used for varying purposes where I did not want to contaminate the real thing. I am about to create a seventh, just to see how outrageous I can be.

    God, I hate Facebook.

    I gladly and joyfully negate your efforts at every opportunity. Apple hardware isn't a good fit for everyone, but I never hesitate to endorse it when appropriate.

    It isn't about the quality of their hardware, as nice as it may be, it is about getting sucked into their evil vortex.

    Every for-profit business is "anti-competitive" based on the slashdot definition of that term. It's become entirely meaningless. Apple isn't Microsoft. They don't act like Microsoft. They don't look like Microsoft.

    They are, realatively speaking, worse. It is kind of like Yahoo vs Google. Yahoo makes no bones about being in it for the money. Google, on the other hands, stands behind the notion of answering to a higher value. And then stooping lower than Yahoo would. I 'trust' Yahoo more than Google, at least in terms of their face value. Don't forget, Jobs built the first Apple as a tool for stealing from the phone company. "Oh. Wait. We can make even more money going legit."

    The comparison is so absurd that it demonstrates that you are an unthinking asshole.

    And richly deserved. They've become the new Microsoft with their 'our way or the highway' mentality.

    I have a lot of respect for what Steven Jobs has accomplished and envy for his money. However, the business tactics he instilled at Apple and that his successors have promelageted are reprehensible. I do what I can do steer peiople away from all things Apple.

    As the AC said, deterrence and recidivism are separate issues. The death penalty has been demonstrated to, at best, have no effect on murder rates. Some studies have shown it actually increases murder rates.

    This is in response to your statement, not a declaration of my opinion on the death penalty. Slippery bugger, ain't I?

    You are right, the death penalty is more expensive. But only becuase of the insane hurdles the anti-penalty crowd have put in place to ensure the rights of the accused are maintained. Good thing we have those insane hurdles, or the more blood-thirsty of us in society would whack off people for every offense. Like bad-mouthing the iPhone

    You are incorrect that the death penalty is not a deterrent. Have you ever heard of someone that was put to death, coming back to life and committing another crime?
