I think that is a perfectly valid response. I think there is nothing wrong with attempts at a new business model, and there is nothing wrong with people refusing to participate in it.
I suspect people like me are the majority. I almost never buy used games any more and I no longer sell my games. I used to but that only really works on Ebay or Craig's list since GameStop is such a ripoff (the used games there are only $5 less the new most of the time). I won't buy any games that are locked down for resale anyway because I don't like that model, but there may be a lot of people who are ok with that. It could be a successful model even if we hate it. Worst case we have to stop buying AAA game titles and stick with Indie games.
Maybe this change of business models will cause some of the Indie makers will grow into AAA producers with more reasonable expectations. Who knows, but I say let them try and, hopefully, fail.

I find it interesting how many enterprise software companies don't understand that. When we run scans against their software and tell them we need them to fix vulnerabilities it's amazing how often they come back with, "This product is designed to be used internally." Like that matters, if your company is bigger then 10 people you shouldn't be surprised to have internal users trying to hack your system.

That isn't entirely accurate. Most people who are murdered are usually involved with crime or involved with someone who is. I hate the near mythical, some one breaks into your house scenario. It is rare for someone to break into another person's house with a gun. When someone breaks into your home they are far more likely to do it without a gun and most defiantly while you are not at home.

Crime causes far more murders then guns do. People don't rob a bank because they have a gun, they rob a bank because they feel it's the only way they can get money or for the rush. People have robbed banks with snapping turtles so there is obviously no need for a gun to do it.

    Look at these numbers http://www.disastercenter.com/crime/uscrime.htm.
In 1993 there were 9.5 murders per 100,000 in the USA.
In 2010 there were 4.8 murders per 100,000 in the USA.
The numbers show a steady decline, but during that time gun laws have primarily become less restrictive. Conceal carry laws have been created and the assault weapon ban was allowed to expire.

IMO, older IT people of the first type are much more likely to suffer from age-related discrimination than older IT people of the second type. In my experience, upper management always finds out who the really important people are in the IT department -- the people they know can be counted on to get things running again following a major incident.

Sometimes this becomes fogged some by the people who aren't competent enough to keep their system running, but are good at fixing it when it fails. Not to be confused with those who are just stuck with a crappy vendor application. Sometimes these people look like hero's because they are so frequently saving the day.

  20. Re:Symptom of a bigger issue.. on Age Bias In IT: the Reality Behind the Rumors · · Score: 1

You and the OP are probably fairly accurate in your argument, but there is another side to it I think.

    1. What if you don't want to go into management or run your own business? There are a lot of hassles with those things, especially running your own business since that generally means even longer hours. I don't really understand why people should be forced to try to move up if they enjoy where they are at. I can understand your pay leveling out some, but in reality it shrinks because the closer you get the top of your pay grade the smaller your raises are. If your raises are less then the rise of cost of living you slowly start to make less money.

    2. There are less positions open at that level. That includes starting your own business. It's not as if there is infinite demand. There is no way every person reaching that age range could successfully start their own business or get a management position, there just isn't space for that many people. So why should people be punished for not being able to move into an overcrowded space? If there are only 40 positions there is no way to fit 300 people into them and unlike many people posting here seem to believe failure does not mean you suck at your job. Sure some of the people who fail suck, but some of them are better then some of those who succeed. Failure might come down to failing a coin toss or some equivalent, but I suppose winning coin tosses is an import work skill and if you can't do it you don't deserve to be employed. I don't know a solution to this, but I think it is a real issue.

The post is fairly ignorant of reality. Mainframe hardware may not be replaced every 2-3 years like a Windows server, but that's mostly because you only need to upgrade them when you start to reach capacity, and mainframe capacity is far higher than any Windows box. Upgrades also tend to provide significantly higher performance. If you look at the 64-bit operating system timeline here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/64-bit you may note that the mainframe had a 64-bit OS before Windows and Mac. Since mainframe hardware is so far behind they had a 64-bit processor before Intel

I know it's difficult to gauge how much would be left by the time it reached the surface without knowing composition and weather or not it would fracture. According to to Wikipedia the meteorite they excavated from the Barringer Crater was 50 meters. If this didn't fragment or lose any mass during descent it would be 1/5th the size.

If everything came out to be 1/5 the size of this it should hit with around 2 megaton's of force which is significantly stronger the the bomb dropped on Hiroshima. Even if half of it were lost in descent it would still be 1/10th the size which would be around 1 megaton of force, still bigger the the estimated 13-18 kiloton of force created by Little Boy.

Anonymous FTP is okay for personal use with data that contains no personal information I suppose, but from a corporate perspective it is a real pain to deal with companies who think we would trust software downloaded from an FTP site without MD5 hashes stored separately to compare against. We should be beyond clear text passwords by this day in age, and it shouldn't be that hard for a company to setup an HTTPS site that allows customers to upload dump files. /rant
