Since no alien race has contacted us yet, they're probably all less advanced than we are.
I hate to be the geek here (ok, not really), but didn'y you see ST:First Contact? They're waiting until we're sufficiently advanced to contact us. I'm trying to program my palm pilot to forge a warp core signature so the everyone will think we have warp technology:)
Do you really know what you're talking about? The PCS band (1900 MHz) in the U.S. has a minimum of 6 competitors in each market. Europe has far less competition.
Um...Where are you from? I live in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. I can get digital service from Sprint PCS and some shitty local provider. Both extend no more than 2 miles past the city limits, and then my phone is dea until just outside minneapolis (4 hours away). Verizon and PCS are the only national services we have. AT&T own't touch us, or iowa or montana. So please, speak for yourself. -Superb0wl
Anyone you would've heard of is probably associated with the RIAA. If it's on the radio or MTV, it's RIAA. I don't personally like the site, but obviously mp3.com is pretty safe.
Another big group of artists you can count on not being in the RIAA is anyone from Europe, and there are some good bands over there. Any geek will tell you that.
personally, i listen to a lot of techno, so i don't have a problem. i have to buy cds online to find anyone i like. try rammstein (they rule) or my favorite trance dj, ATB
In short, there IS an alternative to crappy, overplayed american music.
holy shit! I thought i was the only one who had one of those. kindof funny that as a kid we were playing on a TI-99 (4A) and now people are usuing calculators like the TI-92. wow. That system had so many great gmaes. Like TI invaders (space invaders rip off) and Hopper (with the kangaroo) and that mars lander game.
Hell, that's where i wrote my first ever computer program. Extended Basic on the cartridge. I didn't have a disk drive (they were like $50 extra!) so I had to save all my data on a tape. Like a cassette tape. Great technology, man. Sounded like a modem(not that i knew what a modem was back then....) for like a half hour. Ah....those were the days.
The only way to cure programmers block is a direct infusion of skittles and mountain dew intravenously, keeping the brain in an alert and creative state.
wrong. the best cure, and i've been using this for months, is DustOff (tm). you know, that compressed air you use to clean off your keyboard? inhale like half a bottle and you will come up with some of the BEST ideas ever.
either that or 5:00 will come around a helluva lot sooner. -Superb0wl
I might have to switch from my Slak install to FreeBSD. I ran OpenBSD last year for about a month, but i found i liked linux better. Some things that look kewl in the new FreeBSD:
It now supports an IPv6 ONLY network. no more IPv4. How kewl is that.
And basically the only other differences (besides hardware compatability) that i noticed were tcsh is there now, It uses less i/s of more and ls is color! (yay)
Yea, i'm sorta karma whoring, but no one else is posting. so shut up.
ok, nevermind. this is now redundant. Remind to not go on a coffee break before posting... (try to save face....)
Anyway, to provoke discussion....Does anyone else have any opinions on FreeBSD(or Open or Net, for that matter) vs. Linux? I'd be interested to know...
Point the First: People are afraid of things they don't understand. This is very evident when dealing with computers, especially after Nightline runs bits like "How to Protect Yourself from Hackers."
Point the Second: We call them kiddies because they show the knowledge level of a child. They don't understand how things works, and they don't care. It's like an 8 year old with a bazooka. "Hey, billy, check this out, I can get inside anybody's house on the street! Weeee!"
Point the Last: You are obviously not a 5kr1p7 k1dd13, so don't worry about it. No one on the 'net will EVER know your are 15 unless you tell them (or unless you act like it). I've been reading your posts for a while, and you sound like a resonably intelligent human being. Also, the term script kiddie isn't know outside of the nerd half of the 'net. You will probably never find yourself hanging out after school and a bunch of bullies come up and yell "Hey, Script Kiddie! You Suck!" To sum up: If you know you don't fit into the sterotype, that should be enough to be able to convice others that you're not in the sterotype (I think i got that right). So don't worry about it. And keep "using your computer knowledge for good." Don't joing the dark side:)
Ok, everybody, i think we need to support the RIAA. they're just making it easier for those poor artists to make a buck. We sit here in our cubicles all day for shit money, but imagine how hard it would be if we had to screw hot chicks and rock out all day. Not to mention the fact that i've heard once you're famous you can eat only green M&M's. What a tragedy.
Lars Ulrich is really feeling the pain, so why don't we all help him out. Go to PayLar$.com and help out a poor, homeless rock star. Come on, guys, we CAN make a difference.
Yea, and the big tobbacoo companies! why doesn't somebody due them too?
The sad state of america right now is this: Gun manufacturers DO get sued. So do Car Companies. That implies to me, that it's more than possible, even likely that distributors of DeCSS will get sued. I don't think it will hold up in court, being that it's so minor of an infraction. There is no loss of life (guns, tobacco) or property (cars, lockpicks, etc), but it is definately feasible. Especially with the wrong jury... -Superb0wl
Now, say that we needed n dollars to pay the rent/loans/utilities each month. My wife makes probably.8n, and I'm at around.6n. Individually, we'd go bankrupt. Together, we make 1.4n. That extra.4n affords us a nicely comfortable lifestyle, which some people see and automatically think "one of those kids should stay home with their children!" Unfortunately, that's just not possible.
very good point, i never thought of that. And actually, now that i think about it, the whole dscussion is moot because kids, by the time they're old enough to porn surf(middle-high school), haveing a parent there really won't do too much anyway. At that age, if there's a will there's a way. Beyond infacy, a kid needs a little bit of freedom w/o mom and dad looking over his shoulder. (s)he just needs to be taught while still young how to respect their parents and their rules.
How can matter traveling at mere "supersonic speeds" escape a black hole that, if i quote correctly "pulls everything in, even light." I think the matter would have to travel faster than light to leave. Can we say "warp drive?" hehe -Superb0wl
1) build a secret underground, EMI proof dome 2) buy a stolen laptop with an acoustic coupler from an underground, black market contact 3) dial up to a proprietary satellite link from a cellular phone(cloned, to make sure the cell company can't do anything) 4) strong encrypt, use stenography and write in code(the hawk flies at midnight) 5) only transmit on the second sunday of each month on your private satelite network
This solution will only cost ~ $7 Billion US (763.5 Billion yen) and will guarentee privacy. see also: here and here
I remember as a kid (not too many years ago) when i got caught with a little bit of pr0n on the home pc. this was back in the BBS days, mind you. My father confronted me in my room one day and said something that has made me stay away from internet porn since:
"You wouldn't want your mother to find out, would you?"
<GENERALIZATION> See, what kids today lack is a respect for their elders. </GENERALIZATION> The worst thing in the world that could happen to me as a kid was for my parents to be dissapointed in me. I got in a fight = grounded, but i would understand why. Now for my own sweet MOTHER to think i'm some pervert? that hurts.
Modern kids need parents. Would it kill one of you to stay home? Do you really need that extra paycheck every week so you can live in just a little bigger house or dive a little faster car? Or would you rather invest the time in your kids. I know what choice i'll make... -Superb0wl
Say bye to all your online privacy. This article mentioned Carnivore again, which is simply bad news for anyone. I hate it when people use the "if you weren't doing anything wrong, what do you have to hide" argument, but if you think about it seriouslym the laws were sortof deisgned for that. The consitiution and bill of rights, with the innocent till proven guilty and the unreasonable search and seizure laws were DESIGNED to protect people from being unlawfully prosecuted. True, i _may_ be breaking the law with my computer (napster?) and i'll admit it....in court, under oath. But I don't want someone stumbling on it because they were "in the neighborhood." The day you can come in my house to make sure i'm not running a meth lab, just in case, is the day that you can run Carnivore on my ISP.
Yes, linux can read DVDs. the only problem is that no one lisceneced a DVD _player_ which explains DeCSS. Linux nerds needed a way to PLAY dvd movies, so they wrote DeCSS to rip DVD to MPEG and watch it. That requires you to be able to read the DVD in the first place. but i could still have fun with a few data DVDs. wow, imagine the number of MP3s......ah.... -Superb0wl
The deadline is July 31 - if you haven't signed up by then, you've missed your chance to be one of a few thousand voters who will affect the course of the internet's development.
Being that this site just got slashdotted in less than 10 minutes, we can assume that a large percentage of slashdotters will sign up. And since most of us think +- the same way when it comes to online rights (we like them), we could make an actual difference! i've never made a difference before. this is sort of exiting. Just don't let the power get to Taco's head:) -Superb0wl

If you sit down at a friend's Macintosh, with its single mouse button, you can use it with no problems. If you sit down at a friend's Windows box, with two buttons, you can use it, again with no problems. But just try making sense of a friend's X terminal: three buttons, each one programmed a different way to perform a different function on each different day of the week -- and that's before you consider combinations like control-left-button, shift-right-button, control-shift-meta-middle-button, and so on.
That's the genius of X! ctrl-shift-meta-middle button! Granted, sitting at your friend's X box can be like seeing a new OS for the first time, but once you have your own DE set up how you like it, i believe that it can skyrocket your productivity. sure, you can use your one button mac and work, but the shortcuts that X makes avaiable are indispensible. It follows the *nix mindset. it's not for the weak of heart to tackle. but once you put in the time to learn and configure your *nix box, you can do so much more than is even possible on MacOS or Windows. That's why i love it. It's not a bug, it's a feature:) -Superb0wl
With computers as cheap as they are, why would we need to fit X on a floppy. I know it can be done. someone else liked to it somewhere in this mess. I just don't see the point. I use my linux boot disk when my pc screws up, because i know it will work. I don't have to boot it up and fight with X to run, just because i plugged it into someone's pc who runs a 3dfx card. My boot disk has telnet, fsck, mkfs, and a few modules for network compatability. Video drivers are such a pain, they should be reserved for the Hard Drive. I guess if you want to climb the mountain because it's there, go for it, but i'd rather waste a few megs of disc space so i can run KDE if i'm in the mood, and then the next day switch to Motif, and then show my friend what gnome looks like. The options are what makes X X. That's why it's not Windows 95. as far as the browser, telnet is my browser. If you're going to do the one disc thing, you definately don't need a browser if you get X to run. Xterms! that's why they're there. -Superb0wl
I run a windows 2000 box at home. It's sits next to my Slak box. win 2k looks exactly like win NT, which looks like win 98, which IS 95. I guess you can call that a standard. I run exceed to handle my xterms on win2000 and wow it murders them. Once I tried to export my Gnome to exceed and i almost threw up. windows butchered it. then again, it really wasn't designed to do stff like that. I was just to lazy to crawl under the desk and switch the monitor, plus i wanted to see how it handled. Anyone who complains how X looks, exort your DE to windows. you'll appreciate X like never before:) -Superb0wl
