    Have you been to a lan party? Theres no comparrison between fragging someone sitting next ot you and fragging a complete stranger across campus, or the world.

    Preciscly. Even having the computers for free during offtime will pay for themselves because of people staying longer, and buying more drinks.

    Make it cosy, make it friendly, and attract the same sort of people.

    P.S. Dont use any of this time limiting software. Just imagine it, you are gurading your flag, just about to blast the other team away, and "bing", please pay another 36 cents and enter authorisation code.

    Outside the tourist season in lefkas town, greece, you'll often see a ~10 yearold playing championship manager or something.

    However as he wants to do games too, only a handfull will run on linux. Sure, use linux as the backend ftp/router etc. But keep the front end windows.

    However yes, an internet only terminal doesnt matter if its ie, mozilla or konqueror - as long as they are all set up correctly (flash etc) and there arent any sites that eont work, or need fiddling to work in linux.

    The difference between $800 and $100 on operating systems is insignificant when compared to even the cost of the computer (especially a gaming rig), forget about the taxes, rent, power, heating, and as you said, wages.

    However can you use a $40 off the shelf game in an internet cafe and charge people to play them? Dont you have to buy special licenses?

    Is there really a market for internet cafes anymore

    My parents are setting up a bar in Nidri, Lefkas, Greece - as an aside they're having an ISDN line installed and a couple of computers.

    The greek government collects 75 pounds or euros (I forget) per computer per year (comehting to do with online gambling), plus normal ISP costs.

    However people in nidri are traveling 20km to lefkas town to send a few emails. Not everywhere is as wired as the US/canada/uk/germany/france/benalux type countries.

    I highly doubt giving away your IP is somehow going to make you more profit than you lose.

    We need software X to do function Y. It will take 50 man hours to complete at $50 per hour. Thes $2500.

    However, release code, ask for feature, 2 weeks later function Y is in product X. Take code. Use Code.

    Net gain $2500
    Net loss $0

    Apparently he's already got it.

    I got bad enough grades in my first year when I got a 10mbit net connection, with trek episodes and uberping games. 2nd year in a house, 56k modem, however I splashed out on a widescreen, dvd player, etc. Much better.

    I ran out of time to write about the interesting stuff (assembler) cause I wrote a 3 page essay on why my window might not look like as it was a verison of netscape 6 under afterstep with lots of customisation.

    Still, I learnt. Always read the paper first. Then storm out in disgust.

    Tsunami would be the biggest worry I think.

    Hits in the mid north atlantic, bye bye washington, boston, new york, florida (including our shuttle launch facilities) and the eastern seaborad of the us & canada, most of the carabiean, west coast of europe (lisbon, boudeaux, cornwall, maybe upto southampton, le harve and bristol), azores, canaries, north west africa and northen south america.

    any packet loss wouldnt be as bad as if your packets got routed by rfc1149 in hunting season. RFC 2549 is slightly better, but not much.

    If we send a message through the earth, rather then arround, we cut our latency by 1/3 - and thats ignoring and routers enroute. This could revolutionize quake!

    A hundred years without space travel. I mean right now I guess it wouldn't be a big deal, but in a thousand years it might be!

    Hopefully in a thousand years we'll have some form of shields, or at least strong armour, that would make any ships safe.

    no space travel for 100 years now would be devestating, with so much of the world relying on satelites, not to mention the loss to space exploration.
