I can freely and safely state that the UK sucks. I've been to several countries, and I've never had worse food, less interesting night life, or a more conservative and stodgy society. This is a country where a fist fight breaking out doesn't bat an eye, and seems expected, but if you do "The Worm" (an incredibly harmless and stupid dance move) security will threaten to call the police. This is a true story by the way. The OP has been modded funny, but it's not funny. The UK is god awful. Everything is expensive, the food is really, truly horrible. The only good meal I had there was at an INDIAN restaurant in Scotland. I also had a $30 burger (with the exchange being what it was) that made me physically sick. Oh yeah, and at one restaurant I ordered breakfast, and it came with several LARGE chunks of broken glass in it. I'm dead serious. I'm only happy I noticed before biting into one of them!!!
Also: cameras EVERYWHERE. I mean literally everywhere. It is clear that the privacy and well being of the populace is very low on the priority list for that country ranking probably 200 slots down from the security of the rich and powerful. I go to the UK for one reason and one reason only now: a quick layover to get to a country WORTH visiting, like Ireland or Germany or really any damned country, even Mexico. The UK is AWFUL. Anyone who says otherwise either hasn't been to the UK, or hasn't been outside of it.
Try the new Linux Mint RC. This is definitely the year of desktop Linux, too, unless you are stuck with some crappy corporate proprietary software like many of my clients.

Not that I'm a giant Google fanboy. They've done plenty of evil lately and frankly I don't think Android is the best OS in existence right now. I'm much more of a Linux Mint fanboy, but there doesn't seem to be a good TRULY open OS for phones just yet.... I still have to hack my phone and install Cyanogenmod to get the best OS available. This is not the FOSS dream that I think many were hoping Android would enable.
There have been a myriad of amazingly well thought out zeppelin ideas that have never been implemented or tested. It seems like the corporate control of several industries has limited human technological development for over a century!

Windows 7 is just a crap 1.2 release of Vista. I myself am currently unhappily stuck on a Windows 7 box, and can't wait to get the time to format back to TinyXP, or better yet Linux Mint.

Linux Mint is much easier for beginners, especially the myriad of people coming from Windows.
It's more stable, it's faster (in cases), and has better default apps.
Though I'd personally like to see them commit to VLC rather than the alternatives, and other default apps in addition.
The real existing problem that I see is a lack of games for Linux that really run well, but honestly, after watching the train wreck that was GTA 4 for Windows, well, I still enjoy Urban Terror AND it runs flawlessly on almost every recent Linux.
Still, I'd like to see a fully performing Dolphin on Linux, currently it's half the speed of it's Windows build. There's not even a commonly solid N64 emu that has updates or runs really well for most distros. You have to hunt all over Jesus for a.deb.
That being said, BSNES, arguably the best SNES emu in existence runs as well in Linux as it does in Windows. But maybe that was under wine. Fuck it I can't remember.

The system works well over all, and the derivatives (Mint), clearly show the potential of some of the architectural choices that Ubuntu made early on. But Ubuntu itself? Brown? With crappy wanna-be mac buttons on the wrong side? With some heinous orange and piss colored icons scattered to and fro?
Ubuntu is actually a good OS. And their upstream involvement with Debian, and the hugely varied community of (mostly excellent) remixes are a testament to the solidity and correct design decisions of the actual code.
Maybe Shuttleworth is really a genius and was trying to foster all these remixes by branding his Linux after african language, painting it orange and brown, and implementing features that nobody wanted. In this way he was FORCING all the Ubuntu remixes to come to fruition, and in turn be truly the year of Desktop Linux (I'm looking at YOU Linux Mint Debian Edition)!
