    Now, while I may or may not prefer Britney Spears to ToePhunkGrooveMaster 3000, I definitely do *not* have the time or inclination to wade through the previous 2,999 iterations of their crap to find something I like. I want someone else to do that for me. You are right. It would be hard to imagine a future where anybody could just create content that anybody else can enjoy for free. It would be like if there was billions of web pages. You would have to navigate them all just to find the one you like. What would people do? Make search engines and rating sites? Surely that can never happen.

    It is not a product release, but a press release about research findings. They have a material with interesting properties.

    A real product is probably 5-10 years away. 5-10 years being a code for "We think it will work, but we need more money."

    He constantly mentions $200 as the price of windows. Which is surely a wrong number.

    You should not calculate the price of the OS from a single release, but from the lifetime cost.

    Each release and update costs money, so the price difference is a *lot* higher during the lifetime.

    If you only used non pirated software the difference is even higher.

    Will you rather send your kids to college or use free software? ;-)

    But would it not be possible to use windows drivers for *nix?

    I naturally do not mean that they would be plug and play. But the Windows driver API must be pretty well known, and they run on the same hardware. So it should be simpler to reverse engineer.

    A thin wrapper around the windows drivers could perhaps make it work and hold us over for the short term? Something like Wine for graphic drivers.

    I had decided to buy a 14.1" notebook purely for Linux, but i decided against it as it is pretty much impossible to guess if it will run. Trial and error is a bit expensive ...

    My Son has a PSP and it is really nice. But I would not dream of buying one for myself due to its closed nature. But a Linux device to carry around, to avoid lugging the laptop is a great concept. Playing games, reading books, and viewing media. Reading cooking recipes in the kitchen etc. There are so many uses for a device like that.

    I want one ... if the price is right.

    A Language is not a static thing. It evolves over time. People has been complaining about simplification for centuries. If they where right, we should not be able to put two words together by now.

    I don't hear a lot of poets complaining about the dropping quality of the language.

    You only need to choose if it should be xml, html, javascript or java... That any project can be solved with just one language is an illusion! But it might be a good idea to select a single language in the main language categories, to make it possible to maintain the code.

    The ammonia is made catalytical by combining atmospheric Hydrogen and Nitrogen.

    It can be stored as long as necessary.

    Only when the ammonia is passed through a catalyst the Hydrogen is released.

    When the pellet is emptied, it just needs a new shot of Ammonia to be ready again.

    (I believe that heating is necessary in the catalyst)

    The price of Windows is not cast in stone.

    If a copy of Windows sells for $100 now. Then they can sell it at $11 if a hundred times more computers are sold than now, and make 10% more in the process.

    At that time the question will be if Windows is worth the extra 11 bucks.

    It most likely will be.

    Okay, I tried Zope once a LONG time ago...Zope was pretty .. bloated, complex, confusing, opaque.

    doh! why do you think Zope 3 was developed? It has been built from scratch, and has become absolutely amazing.

    A lot of development patterns has been discovered while developing in Z2. These patterns has formed the basis for the development of Z3.

    Another big effort has been made in making it more "pythonic" to develop in Z3. So development is far simpler than it used to be.

    Furthermore it has been developed using test driven development, making it very stable allready. Despite the rewrite.

    That certainly depends on the scale of the parts.

    The closer they are to the atomic scale, the more durable they will be.

    Just considder molecules and atoms.Memory built from single atoms will never wear. I think that is the whole idea.

    But they will suspectible to errors.

    I have installed Linux several times over the last few years, on practically all of my hardware configurations.

    But none of the times has it been plug'n play. Often drivers that worked in one version didn't work on the next. So after the having a system where the graphics worked, It wouldn't on the next, because that driver had been left out. But now the sound would work. And so on.

    I don't remember ever having a painless installation. Untill I do, I won't bother with Linux as my workstation. It will keep running on a simple server with old and safe hardware where the drivers will allways work.

    Windows is more than stable enough for my desktop, and I can easily earn the price of XP Pro in the time I save not fiddling with drivers.

    The quality of the desktop really isn't the main problem for my Linux usage. I don't find it worse, just different. But using too much time installing the OS is a problem.

    I don't do it as a hobby. The OS is a tool, and so has to be efficient.

    I have my own music that I can listen to while working.

    It annoys me no end that I have to turn that down while having to listen to music I can't stand.

    Or make it an option. "Press 5 for switching of music while holding."

    I run a bussines. And anything that can save me 1 hour of work is worth $45 to me. Simple as that.

    Switching to Linux for the desktop would cost me a lot more time than that, as I would have to re-learn my habbits.

    I can even afford to pay it every second year without breaking a sweat.

    And windows isn't that insecure. Shure if you only use MS products it is. But Apache, Mozilla etc. runs nicely on Windows too.

    I prefer Linux as a server, but desktop Linux is still to bothersome for me.

    It is *far* more cross platform than c++/c.

    I want glasses with a high resolution display. Perhaps even with seperate displays for each eye, for that nice 3D effect.

    This would be so much better than big screen tv's. For one we could eventually have as big a screen as the largest movie theater.

    I could also watch movies/tv in bed without keeping the missus awake with blinking lights.

    They would need to cost about $150 a piece for them to break through. But then it would be the best thing since sliced bread.

    When Microsoft prevents somebody from loading another browser icon onto the desktop it is shady business and a matter for the court system.

    If somebody from KDE project wants to prevent Redhat for loading other icons on to the desktop it is high moral standards.

    If this isn't double standards I don't know what is!

    There isn't far from cutting down a movie in length to remove obnoxious scenes, to altering the message of the movie.

    How about a racist, fascist or religious version of popular movies, books, songs? Then you would in fact be able to make anybody say what pleases you by editing their artwork.

    Is that fair use?
