The other important point is that voting for a third party means the other candidates are obliged to adjust their policies to prevent the third part "stealing" their votes. People often complain about Nader and the spoiler effect, but perhap Gore would have won (by a sufficient margin to counter voting irreglarities) if he'd taken on some of Nader's policies. Or perhaps he would have lost by a larger margin by moving too far away from the common ground.
You're also encouraging them to put far more resources than they need to into tank production, and working out where the tank factories are. So you end up losing the tank part of the battle but you can spend the resources elsewhere.
Wouldn't say that exactly. Nevada using buggy voting machines that are prejudced towards a candidate is pretty bad. Suggestions of deliberate fraud are a little sensationalist though.
They only knew the guy for a week. Is it really that implausible that he didn't have a good memory for faces of people he met 30 years ago, or just was mildly intrigued that the looked similar? I've met people with striking similarities before. It happens. Perhaps their relationship was absolutely fantastic at the time Marty was conceived and aside from what could easily be dismissed as circumstantial evidence or his memory playing tricks on him, there's no reason to even think she might have cheated on him.
Consoles tend to use their own APIs. The one on the PSP has a resemblance to OpenGL but it's quite different. Not sure about the others.
Smartphones use OpenGL ES. This is basically a subset of OpenGL. The OpenGL bibles don't usually include specific information on these. They're aimed more at desktop applications.
I remember the "you killed my pine" line sticking in my head after I'd videotaped it and going back to check. Probably the second or third time I saw it.
The story explained that time travel is possible, so we accept that. It explained that cars in the future will hover so we accept that. And so on. If something amazing happens then you need to explain how it happens. It's the whole willing suspension of disbelief. If you don't put some sort of explanation of these things you have no story. If the conclusion makes no sense it's not a story. It's randomness.
That's what I was thinking. You can get a good starting point for the travelling salesman problem just by picking the closest non-visited node (typically 25% longer than optimal). Iterative improvement will get you very close to the best possible solution.
Would make more sense to skip 7.0 entirely and go to 8.0 if they did that. They could give it a version number of 80 for all the difference it would make. All anyone cares about it that it's greater than or equal to the previous version (and if equal that the minor version is higher)
It probably will be. Windows 95 was Windows 4.0. Windows 98 was Windows 4.10, and ME was 4.90. Same basic OS with minor revisions. Windows 7 is version 6.1. This does suggest it's actually Windows Vista.1 but version numbers are pretty arbitrary. Still, Windows 8 doesn't have to be a complete rewrite. Simply an update.
Seems that the clever programs simply repeat memorised snippets of conversation. After a while this will give a realistic human conversation, but it doesn't really strike me as human intelligence, or at least not a particularly useful kind. I'm pretty certain we don't converse by memorising conversation. he intelligent agent in the conversation is the person who had the previous conversation. The other intelligence is simply the human who had the recorded conversation.
That does surprise me. While it does make sense from the company's point of view, normally the person dealing with claims isn't empowered to make that sort of decision.
Well, I care because I find it intriguing how big busineses avoid taxes.
But Google is paying taxes. To another government. Is Google goung to do better things than the governmnet? The government would be able to reduce taxes benfitting everybody. Google is able to pay dividends, benefitting those with Google shares.
I did indeed overlook that. My logic was flawed.
That said, I find it even less convincing that Sony would allow a subsidiary they didn't wholly own acess to their Games console technology.
Funnily enough it ws this that convinced me it was a fake:
" For Sony buffs, you'll be interested to know that there's no Memory Stick slot here, but there is support for microSD cards"
Why would Sony suddenly change policy when the Sony controlled format is widely available? They wouldn't. Sony doesn't work that way.
In your example, are we asuming that using slashdot to facilitate crime is a major probem, and that the Slashdot admins do nothing about it?

This is a non story.

If you sell a gun to someone you know is planning to use it or murder, then you're an accessory.
Most people who chip their XBox want to use it for pirate games.
It's not just the governmnet payments. Criminals are a very cheap workforce.
Uhm... 2000 in Roman Numerals is MM. ME stood for "Millenium Edition"
The point I was making was that just because MS claims something is a new OS doesn't actually mean it's a complete rewrite. Could simply be an update.

The point is narrative explanation.

I'm travelling into the future at the rate of 1 second per second. Why am I not in space then??

The news is that they were still making the things for the last 10 years.
Although technically they're still making Walkmans. Just not cassette based versions.
In this case I think it's also about people feeling a desire to reward the creator for being cool.
People are always not what economists would call "rational actors". Either that or we need to establish a price for a positive feeling.
That does surprise me. While it does make sense from the company's point of view, normally the person dealing with claims isn't empowered to make that sort of decision.
We blame him for having the wrong name. HTH.
So, Vince, if it makes you feel better, we'll blame you. It's all your fault.
Now, has that got us more IP addresses? No? Why worry about blame then? Real engineers fix things.

Very pleased to hear that. Civil liberties was my biggest concern at the last election.
