    The funny thing is, the whole debate has been going on for centuries, and causing fractures in the church between those factions who believed that Jesus was poor, and so the church should be, and those who believed that having lots of money is really great.

    Umberto Eco's Novel "The Name of the Rose" has this as a major subplot (I think it's less significant in the movie).

    Well, it's quite simple, your honour. We have no real plausible explanation, but proving this will cost thousands of dollars and there's always the risk that the plaintifs may come up with something we haven't considered. There is absolutely no chance of getting the money back and it's cheaper to just settle.

    Justice is something the legal system has considered but decided to eliminate as too much hassle.

    Well, you don't absolutely need to call your loved ones if you're on a plane. Some people do absolutely need to bring babies. If you can find a reliable means to prevent babies from screaming then I'd be all for it.

    The ISPs know who pays their bills. They're not going to get rid of customers unless they become a net cost. They might ditch a few of their customers but only because their bandwidth use is too high, and a complaint from the BPI will be an excuse.

    Keep your torrenting to a reasonable level and ignore any complains from the ISP (and maybe install peerguardian or something). They really don't give a damn what you do.

    Yeah. That's not a problem. The law isn't to prevent the infringer from gaining, but to prevent the copyright/trademark holder from losing. They still owe the copyright holder for damages done (assuming they're found to be infringing).

    This is nice to hear but I'd like to hear more details on the reasoning behind the decision. Why are the fees illegal? Does it apply to all fees? Is there a law in the US that such clauses should only relate to the losses suffered by the company (as is the case in England), or is there another factor involved?

    Contracts can be considered invalid for all sorts of reasons. If some aspect is illegal, or if the signatory was coerced, or if there is something inherently unfair hidden behind misleading language. Doesn't make them all unenforcable. Just this one. And just some clauses of it

    No idea. I only heard about it when some silly people wanted to post a balloon (and therefore pay negative postage based on weight). They refused based on this rule although I imagine it's really meant for compressed gas.

    This raises other questions such as "why not specify compressed gas".

    No they haven't. They can have broad reasonable limitations on the type of traffic that's permitted. Unless P2P itself is found to be illegal they're perfectly safe. Just like the US Mail service is permitted to refuse to transport helium yet retain common carrier status.

    Why would I want a general purpose computer in my car? Will it help me to get where I'm going or improve my journey in some way? Seems lots of cheap dedicated devices do that much better.

    What they are doing is not moral, people who are aware of this are not happy with that.

    They're selling you a product that is worth more than 700 to you for less than 700. Seems perfectly moral to me.

    But that's only part of the difference. They have ex VAT prices on the website (most companies that sell to businesses do this because businesses don't pay VAT), and that's still 479. Still substantially more than the US cost.

    Perhaps this is less generic though. I'm sure differentiation of say a motorbike, a car, a human, and a tree is a lot easier than a ball, a plate, and another generally round object.

    It's faster than my first PC. And my second PC (which was four times the speed) And my third PC (which was another 4 times increment). My first PC was suitable for email, word processing, photo editing, games (Doom worked very well. So did Descent and X-wing). I could use it for telnet and run a number of chat clients.

    Honestly, all I really need for a portable is the ability to type stuff up and send it to other people. This will do that very well. Anything else is just a bonus.

    Steve Jobs may or may not have cancer. He also may or may not get shot by a crazed Windows fanboy tomorrow. Make the investment in Apple with full knowledge that there is a risk, and estimate what the risk is. Or decide that the risk is too high and don't.

    It's not up to Steve Jobs to make it easy for you!

    Let's not. Dealing with war crimes takes years and some highly skilled prosecutors. Same with fraud. Dealing with pot takes much less time and anyone with basic education can do it.

    I have no sympathy for people who complain about the way things are and don't even try to change them.
