If RedHat (or whomsever) is signing its binaries purely so they will run on specific machines that have been locked to those distributions (the only case in which the keys are relevant, remember the wording "in the recommended or principal context of use"), in such a way that users of those machines cannot compile their own versions, then RedHat is violating the principle (and probably the letter) of GPLv2 and definitely the letter of GPLv3. It is absolutely right that under those circumstances, RedHat either not sign the distribution (and not produce a version for DRM'd computers), or they distribute keys allowing others to do so.
Signing binaries does not can can not restrict the binaries to only run on a specific machine. If what you're doing with the binaries restricts what machine the software can run on, that is a different matter.
The point of the key is to guarentee the that the code came from Red Hat, and giving away that key is idiotic. Giving away that key will let any wanker say that his code has been signed and certifies by Redhat.
If you choose to run a machine that only runs signed binaries, that's your problem, not the GPL.
In trying to protect itself, the FSF is going to shoot itself in the foot and remove the leg.
I tend to use lots of factories, singletons, stateless objects, data access components, transactions, and data validators.
I can either write and implement a lot of these myself, or I can pick a framework that does it as much of it as possible for me.
An interesting story, I was messing with an application awhile back. Something completely different, and i was using this framework because of its connection management. I then discovered that it everything interesting I was doing in the other peoject was already built into this one.
Incidentally the framework I'm talking about is Spring. I picked it because I like what it does.
I also profess to being a Struts hater. I can do most of what Struts does without it. The same applies to Spring, but with Spring I don't have to extend somebody elses base classes to write interfaces to separate my own code from the frameworks. Then again I do tend to code to the interface anyway, but I'm still not necessarily extending somebody elses base classes.
I remember years ago, they would say, "We didn't elect him, but his people had the guns". Now they have elected somebody just as bad.
The point is that while many people, including some Iranians claim that the right wing nutjobs are in the minotiry, they are not as small a minority as they would have you believe.
Unfortunately many people, including Senator McCain, do not realize that conservative Republicanism is dead. And their party has effectively been hijacked by the religous right and as long as they continue to support the right-wing nutjobs like Bush rather than opposing their own party and votine in mass for he other guy, they will never get back to the conservative ideals of small government.
why haven't we broken up this one by making the OS open-source and allowing MS to continue as it pleases with its other products (which don't force anyone to use them.)
The company was broken up. The court then changed its mind on appeal,. No doubt in part to the Attorney Gereral Ashcroft rolling over and saying "the case is without merit". AFTER the conviction.
These right wing nutjobs have thousands, if not millions of people giving them money.
Some people will say, "Yes I gave them money, and although I don't agree with everything they do, they still do a lot of good." This is bull. by giving these people any money, an TV ratings, you support their extremist agenda and giving them license to keep doing and preaching what ever they want.
While it doesn't mean that there are not consequences, it does mean that you don't actually have to work for a living.
What she doesn't understand is that as a lawyer she's allways working under somebody. Then again, since she's living on funds provided by her father maybe she actually isn't working. Must be nice...
This comes as no surprise, yahoo still sucks. If you want to do something even remotely interesting find another service and leave Yahoo to the mundanes.
It yahoo actually ever does get interesting, it will be because they've lost their primary users to MSN or back to AOL.
When I first saw this headline I immediately thought, "That what FOX News is doing." Now I guess he's pretty unhappy with them as it seems like the only people who are paying attention are in the US, and not Iraq.
That it would happen in China does not bother me in the least, that's the cost of doing business there. I don't remember the Chinese ever saying the "Free Speach" was a righ, in fact I think I remember them saying just the opposite. Besides US officially supports doing business there, I justify this because the house voted The 286-141 to keep China's MFN status.
Here's a list of what bothers me:
The fact that we legalized the sale of missile technology to the Chinese in the 90s.
The appearant "One China" policy.
The terrorists / prisoners held in Guantanamo, at least the blogger knows he's going to get out in 10 years, if he survives.
The request made by the US for log and search information from Yahoo, MS and Google.
While I do think that China has the right to self government, I also think we have the right to, and we should revoke their MFN status. Their MFN status has done squat to change the system, it has only subsidized.
The fact that with the Patriot Act, and the indefinate state of war, the current Administration isn't that different from the Chinese.
Google took a hit because they stood up to demands from the US government for records of searches by Americans. IOW, they took a stand for individual privacy and against erosion of civil liberties.
The US govt. is not going to shut down Google's operations in the US for non-complince, because Google can afford good lawyers.
Now Google takes a hit because they didn't stand up against the Chinese government. IOW they didn't stand up against erosion of civil liberties.
The Chinese can and will shut down Google's Chinese operations for non-compliance.
Big honking difference, that a lot of people here don't seem to understand.
I don't see congress complaining about the French mandated censorship of NAZI merchanzise and advocacy on Yahoo!
Seems like the geeks are getting what they deserved. I remember when I was learning UNIX and it seemed like the most common answer I got from the CS majors was RTFM.
Note: I always read the manual before I get or spec out a system. That means I won't be getting systems from half a dozen of the major companies. Damn I miss my Gentoo-Alienware laptop.

As I understand it, the current nutjob in Iran was elected. He may have been elected by a minority, but it certainly wasn't a .1 % minority.
What's worse?

I say hit 'em where it really hurts, the wallet
Hell yes MFN needs to be overturned. We have a max 2% tarrif, they have a max 30% tarrif and there's a 40 Billion dollar trade deficit?
The worst part about Bush that he has aggrivated every bad policy set by Clinton. China MNF and Nafta for starters.
I want to see Waxman run from president. There's a Democrat with balls.
Hell Yes!
Once again, not the same.

Screw Alignment, Life is not D&D.
Censorship is not the same as handing Anne Frank over to the NAZIs.

Has Dvorak ever been right about anything?
Something else I forgot about why play on a PC rather than an XBox: What's the resolution of a TV as compared to a computer monitor?
