Interesting. At Google.com top 10 results for the search terms "brutally stupid" all link to stories about National Public Radio. The whole WWW has judged this "brutally stupid"!!!
Money is very nice. In addition to a significant number of us being unemployed right now (anyone want a Java developer?), help paying for domain name registration, web hosting, etc.. would be great.
Actually, since many projects are hosted for free by SourceForge, you might just send a check to them. I've thought about sending them a thankyou check for the free hosting, but don't have the money to spare right now (see above).
Nooo!! By 2037, the seconds since January 1, 1970 will have overflown and all UNIX machines in the world will crash, bringing on a *real* apocolypse. (Y2K was just practice, this is gonna be the big one!!!)

(PS I'm trying to be funny, no need for a technical correction, unless you really want to.)
Your point about non-computer animation and books is excellent. I think we've all become emotionally attached to various characters from these media.
But I've also noticed that nobody I've talked to formed any emotional attachment to the characters in Final Fantasy. This can of course happen in regular movies as well (Dungeons and Dragons, for example) due to bad dialog, poor acting, or whatever so that may simply be the explanation for Final Fantasy.
However, given all the comments I've read about the unconvincing acting of CG characters, I have a theory. Perhaps this all has to do with our *expectations*. If a character looks completely human, then we expect human-quality acting and facial expression. In contrast, if a character looks like a big cartoon ogre, then we only expect cartoon-quality acting. So when Shrek delivers really cool CG acting, we say "impressive", but when we get really cool CG acting in Final Fantasy, it's "unconvincing".
So, by making the characters look convincingly human, the animators raise the bar on our expectations for the quality of the acting.
Note that when I use the term "acting" without qualifiers I'm talking about all aspects: voice, body language, facial expression.. It all has to be there.
Yes, definitely good to give credit to Zork. Back when I was into MUDs (weren't we all addicted at one point?), I would attempt to explain a MUD as "Zork, but with other people playing at the same time". Of course, the people I was explaining to didn't know about Zork either.
Now I try explaining the MUGU system as "a MUD, but with simple graphics".
"Yeah man we gotta ODBC the user database from the SQL server into the IIS machine's Java applet to ramp up the TPS and get it all into the Excel template for the reports for the CIO I tell you whut."
Mmmm.. yeah, I've been meaning to talk to you about your TPS reports.
Did anyone else make it to page 17 for the discussion on quincunx?
According to the author, "It describes the pattern of dots found on a five-sided die", but actually this is the pattern seen when you look at an eight-sided die just right. In any case, there are no regular polyhedra with five sides.
Oh come on, who moderated the parent down as offtopic??
The original post mentions that the software was "developed by a few students at Chalmers University of Technology ins Sweden", and the same is true for Genesis.
Just watch, this post will get "offtopic" *and* "flamebait".
Karma be damned, I'm still coloring outside the lines. But it would be nice if you'd save the "offtopic" for hot grits and such.
I think you're completely correct about shopping and such, but you're neglecting the fact that although M$ is a monopoly, that monopoly doesn't yet extend to the manufacture of shrink-wrap and glossy paperboard.
RedHat, Mandrake, et al. are doing a decent job of moving into the glossy boxes and no-command-prompt installer territory.
Obviously M$ has quite the marketing machine, but don't make it sound like nobody else can get a glossy box on the shelf.
I think most people would actually prefer to have all of their data on someone else's machine.
Think about information as a type of currency. Now, do you store all of your money in your house, or do you keep most of it in someone else's building? I keep mine in the bank, because they have better security, insurance, and convenient features such as free checking.
Note of course that banks go to a huge amount of trouble to assure everyone that their money is safe. M$ will need to earn similar trust from the public, and really earn it, not just pretend it's secure like they do with current software.
So if M$ fails (and I hope they do) it will be because they have failed to earn trust, not simply that people care what machine their data are on.
His daughter went to Colorado College, while I was working in the Computing department. He came to spread M$ propoganda to the Computing Director and other "decision makers" at the college. With a not-so-subtle tone of "if you get your students to use M$ software, I'll arrange a sweet deal for you (or make a big contribution to the college)".
Anyways, I got to sit in on a few meetings with him, and discuss some campus issues with him. He's totally arrogant and elitist and everything you'd expect from the way M$ does business. I tried really hard not to be prejudiced against him just because of where he works, but I think he's a total asshole.
I doubt this is shocking news to anyone, but I felt the need to share. Thanks for letting me vent a little hostility:)
I'd rather see ethanol or methanol vehicles become popular. Alcohol does burn much cleaner than gasoline, and is renewable in exactly the same way that vegetable oils are.
Unlike Napster et al., Freenet is designed such that no matter where Mir leaves a crater, there will be very little or no loss of data from the Freenet network. Obviously "highly survivable" is a very important feature.
For those of us who are actually in/near Austin, anyone know of organized plans for protest?
On an aside, I was at the City Council last night when they gutted a proposal for strong police oversight. So expect more police beating on nonviolent protesters:(
Umm.. this guy is worried about the aerodynamics of a quickcam. I don't think he wants the extra drag of a generator. Remember that power has to come from somewhere (thermodynamics, yadda yadda), and in this case more power coming from batteries is better.

Heh. Nice rant. I was following along nicely until I hit your signature. You're not biased on this one, are you?

I would explain why the parent post should be moderated up (even further), but I've got (shameless plug) The MUGU Project to get back to...

I just downloaded the 300dpi JPEG. It's pretty sweet! You really can see all those pixels in that image if you look at your monitor close enough! :)

Specifically, I'm concerned about the images and sounds that are included with a game I'm working on.
Does the GPL "contaminate" these other files that are included? If so, how do "source" and "binary" distribution apply to images and sounds.
Thanks,

The referenced article doesn't give any prices, but Google is my friend.
The 25-mile antenna (most expensive) has a list price of $1,069.00. The others are cheaper, going as low as around $100.
Reference: ScanOnline (the Bridge Antennas link, in particular)
ObDisclaimer: I'm only referencing ScanOnline because they came up "lucky" in Google.

Sure, but just because they were one of the little fish in the industry doesn't mean they want to help the current little fish.
Obviously all the major tech companies were small at one point, but to remain major they have to crush any small companies who might challenge them.
