    1) a few asshole cops overstep their bounds
    2) the prosecutors refuse to take the issue to court, and clarify to the cops what is or isn't allowed

    Sounds like a workable system to me.

    Get over yourself. Some gear is fussy and doesn't work with USB adapters but does work with real serial ports.

    It's easier to just avoid making heat in the first place. Use old h/w or massively underclocked new-ish HW, with onboard video or a really crappy video card.

    Why do you need that much horsepower for home?

    My home file/mail server is a P233, and if anything it's overpowered for the job.

    If you're writing down your password, then why are you even bothering with an encrypted disk in the first place? If your information is important enough to merit encryption, then surely it is too important to leave such an obvious back door in your security 'lying' around. Safety deposit box?

    - Time to download too great. Compare that with going to a video store, and even today in the relative bandwidth backwater of the U.S. it's not such a big difference. And speeds will of course increase over the next few years that Blu-ray is trying to build its distribution monopoly. Geez, how far do you live from your video store? And don't you have to brave the Big Blue Room to stock up on beer and Doritos anyway?

    The best way to reduce competition is to create barriers to entry - to practice law you've got to graduate from an approved law school, and pass the bar exam in your jurisdiction.

    If Offshore Dude goes to a US law school and passes the bar exam in whatever state, he sure as hell isn't going back to Offshore and work for peanuts.
