As I understand it, nobody plays the original Beethovan|Bach|whoever scores, because modern instruments don't sound the same as the ones he composed for.
Everyone plays modern arrangements of the classical pieces, which someone does have a valid copywright to.
Theoretically some gifted fellow could sit down with the original score, re-orchastrate it, and release that arrangement with a friendly license.

Anyone here work in the auto industry? How many parts are required to build a car? How many different materials?
I can't see myself spending a whole weekend milling 50 different gaskets and the next weekend milling out 300 little plastic clips to hold the bodywork on and the next weekend........
You'd still have to buy hoses, springs, seats, pipes, filters...
My sister ended up buying a few giant CD wallets. You can condense entire shelves full of media into a small package, easily kept away from wee fingers.
It will take weeks to rip a big collection, the wallets might be a good stop-gap solution anyhow.

Heh. How would you describe the OpenBSD installer?
While you're changing the building codes, require better insulation and higher quality windows for new houses/buildings.
If I were Supreme Overlord, I'd require new subdivisions to ensure that all houses are properly oriented, i.e. nice big windows facing south to soak up passive heat in the winter. Require the proper roof overhang for those windows, i.e. shade those windows in the summer so they don't get too hot. This would require abandoning the ugly ass 1-floor-plan-fits-all subdivisions, but wouldn't add any materials or time to construction.
Another poster somewhere else in this discussion says that juries aren't an option in Canadian courts for minor offenses, or very long and complex cases.
I read an article by a british lawyer (barrister?!?) a few months ago arguing for abolishing jury trials entirely. I can't find the damn thing now.
I suppose my point is that continental Europe manages to maintain civilisation without jury trials, I'm sure those of us with British-inspired justice systems could survive without 'em too.
A shareware game did that 10 years ago - Nahlakh
Your sword skill started out "terrrible" and as you fought it progressed to "horrible" and then "poor" etc. etc. until finally you were "awesome".
This was pretty cool but had drawbacks, i.e. it isn't obvious if "terrible" is better than "horrible" etc.
And you can usually go back and slaughter everyone for even more XP :)
Yeah, who needs quality and service?
Cool, glad to talk to an actual musician about this.
I thought that almost any orchestra performance ends up paying royalties to someone, is that an exaggeration?

I've got an old Zire 21 with ridiculously long battery life.
This one only has 2MB but the new ones have 8MB.
I'd like a nice, simple phone that doesn't take 45 fucking seconds to boot.

Where will he get funding without a studio?
Novell must be laughing their ass off.
NetWare 3.x was so good it almost bankrupted the company - why upgrade when the product you bought 3 years ago does exactly what it is supposed to?

/bin/sh.

Yeah, backwards compatability.
No sane person would worship
I'll be surprised if the MS shell ever sees the light of day. If it does arrive it will probably be deeply flawed.
That doesn't mean I have to love
Yeah, even VBscript can be a powerful tool. Ugly ugly ugly, but ubiquitous and has plenty of OS hooks.

Hey man, I love Carnage Blender!
I had to stop playing because it was too addictive, but you've got a cool thing there.
Heh.
There's no feeling quite like trying to restore your data, only to discover that the backups have been silently failing for weeks or months.
> Old boxes have a tendency to flake out for me.
Even if the mobo/PS dies, that doesn't hurt the data on the disks.
Probably nobody, but I didn't put up a website bragging about how awesome the salaries are in Moose Jaw.

Horseshit.
You notice they didn't include Winnipeg or Halifax in their little survey.
For the price of a nice house in Calgary I could probably buy a whole block in Saint John or Moose Jaw.

I challenge you to a duel, sir!!!!

Thanks for your advice about signing your real name to web posts, Dancin Santa. Is that a Swedish name, or Dutch?

Lots of nontrivial projects have made do with CVS, a source code control system with limitations is much better than nothing at all.
Yeah, but if they'd gone with CVS from day 1 they'd have gained most of the benefits and wouldn't have to re-tool everything now.
Lots of countries get along without jury trials, they're a weird artifact of the English legal system.
The Brits are taking steps to scale back jury trials, for example in "long and complex fraud cases".
