The Clie is a viable option. I have one. I did not buy it for mp3 use, but it certainly works for such. If all you are looking for is an mp3 player, I would not recommend the Clie. It only supports 3 different bitrates, the hightest being 133 or something weird like that.

Also, I use a 64 mb white 'MagicGate' sony memory stick to put my mp3's on. It works fine. No copy protection as far as I can tell. I haven't tried to copy mp3's off of it to my computer, but I doubt that is a problem. It comes up on windows as a removable storage device and you can copy files to and fro without a problem. I don't think mp3's will be any different. Anyone know for sure? I check it out when I get home.

Sure its the safest thing, but damn, its not that big of a deal. Really, what percentage of the info you need drive correctly comes from hearing? not much.

Seriously, though, there is a huge difference btwn CD and radio quality, even at low volumes. This is especially true for the higher and lower ranges in my own opinion. There's no clarity to the high stuff and the low stuff is virtually non-existant on the radio...and its very noticable at low volumes. I don't consider myself a manic audiophile either. I bought my shit from CC or Best Buy mostly, and most of them 'experts' would scoff at my system. But its fine for me and its a great deal better than a factory system. Its certainly good enough that any untrained ear (such as mine) can tell there is a huge difference.

Well, if locals start doing the same thing evenutally, but for free, and it sounds like they will, these guys are gonna be hard pressed to get customers. I, personally, found the idea of getting the high quality sound appealling, because honestly, sound from radio with my car or home stero systems just sounds bad compared to CDs. I'd love to get the digital sound, but I think I can wait for my locals to start broadcasting it for free. I mean, why waste the money on a satellite radio, if I'm gonna end up getting one for my locals evetually anyway.

Why don't the website audio streams have the same high sound quality as heard on an XM Radio? We stream our audio samples on the Web using Windows Media at an encoded 32kbps. Although this low bit rate may sacrifice detail and quality of sound on the web, it ensures that all web users, from dial-up to T3, will be able to easily listen to a sampling of XM programming. The sound quality of the XM Radio service in cars and homes is notably higher. You won't be able to tell the difference between XM and a CD playing.

I personally don't have as much time as I would like so the radio is often convient for me. The problem I have with the radio, though, isn't so much the commercials as the quality of the sound I'm picking up. I have a fairly descent sound system and the differnce in sound between the radio and a CD is enormous. Here is why: Shouldn't a region 1 DVD work two or three years later in region 2 after it has been released there? If that was there only reason, then yes, they would build in some time print on each DVD so it would eventually work everywhere. They don't do that though do they? why? Because that is not the only reason. The other is to protect all the distributors in the world from the US distributors. I think it is safe to say the US (region 1) versions generally have more features, they come out earlier, and they are cheaper. Region coding is an attempt to protect local distributors from US distributors. These guys pay for lisences to distribute them in their respective region and expect to get a return. That's right, not a single RCE DVD released to this date stops you from viewing it on a region 0 player. Even if it did, you could just flashupgrade by CDRW to the region of your choice.

The newer firmwares fix all the seamless branching problems that have plague the player, and you can easily obtain upgrades for you DVD-ROM in the Apex as well. American researchers found a rare hospital fungus "Aspergillus fumigatus" in their intensive care wards following the installation of computers. Dr Forstall said the fungal contaminations were first discovered when the computers were introduced into his hospital's 23-bed Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

I'm a medical student and have done some rounds with the doctor incharge of microorganisms at our hospital, so I can say fairly confidently that they were testing for the stuff long before the computers arrived. Granted, I'm in the US, but culturing for bacteria is not that expensive. The article says the fungus was found in the wards after the introduction of the computers. Assuming they've been tesing all along, which I'm bet there were, I think its fair to say the computers were a reservior for the bugs.

You are right, Aspergillus is everywhere in the environment, and probably is occasionaly introduced to IC units in other ways, but those places are cleaned reguarly and bed sheets are more often thrown away and burned rather than reused. So I'm sure it gets introduced other ways occasionally, but once the source leaves or is cleaned, its gone. Now the computers on the otherhand it seems were overlooked as a source and provided a regular source of contamination which to a patient lacking a cell mediated type of immunity (ie. AIDS, organ transplant patients) can be deadly.

Like you said, though, no one healthy would have to worry about this unless you started licking your computer clean! Aspergillus is known to produce a toxin called aflatoxin, which can cause liver damage and liver cancer. Normally this is only seen in areas of Africa south of the Sahara desert where the mold tends to grow on there food before it is eaten.

One thing I keep learning as I get older, there are a lot of idiots with degrees out there, engineers and computer scientists included. I have a neighbor who works for Boeing, has a masters engineering. He supposedly designs the consoles in F15's. This same guy has his pilot light go out a few years ago in his water heater, and had no idea how to relight it! So he came over and ask my step-father, who has no degree, to come over and fix it for him.

My step-father on the other hand can do about anything he wants. I've seen him build computers, write his own programs, fix cars, build cars from scrap, build an in ground pool of his own design, add on to our garage, repair air conditioners and heaters, wire commercial building, and build a network at his work...he's supposed to be the maintenance guy. Did I mention he only had a high school graduation?
