  1. Wow. on Play DVDs On Linux · · Score: 3

First of all, I find it rather disturbing how some people seem to be really ignorant.

We (the people) are allowed to 'view' our purchased DVDs based the the fair use law! No ands, ifs, or buts.

Now to quote you, "No it's illegal like stealing cable is illegal".

If you are paying for Cable-TV, you are ALLOWED BY LAW to be able to DESCRABLE IT. Just so long as you dont descramble the channels you are NOT paying for. Look it up, and make more informed posts next time.

To give you a little history... There one was a time when Telephone companies tried to charge you for each phone you had installed on the SAME line. You had to also purchase the telephone directly from the phone company. The courts thought otherwise. This same case was used towards the cable companies as well. Now, you are ALLOWED to purchase your own telephone just like you can purchase your own cable descambler independent from the phone/cable companies. Just as long you were PAYING for service.

Heh, First, I'd like to say I got a big kick out of your flame.

I guess i'm just seriouly pissed off about having being forced to use the ever ,stable?, windows 2000 @ work.. the thing is.. It crashes all the goddamn time. right out of the box. The machine was built with win2000 in mind and all hardware was in microsoft's list. Remember, Forced.

Sun products on the other hand work flawlessly (at least when i used em).. there is slightly more freedom too and a sliggtly lower price to boot!.. So i believe sun isn't all that bad when comparaed to microsoft.

If only there were an easy way to push microsoft out of the home market as well as the server market. It it my understanding that a lot of people are stuck using windows because of the large market share, the variety of software, and the lack of (better?) alternatives.

Personally, I believe the open source unixes (Solaris, Linux, BSD, etc) would be key. These operating systems need to be more compatible with each other and easier to use, to attract developers... or at least push compile compatibility.. So one application developed for one platform is easily ported to another.

Microsoft has grossly abused technology, inovation, personal freedom, etc. for large corporate gain. And.. thus, in my opinion, deserves to be put out of business. This may prove difficult as they are very large, have govnmt lobbyists preaching Microsoft's cause, and have too much money. We must all remain strong and not give to microsoft's bullshit no matter how much money they are offering. This is War, and it isn't gonna be easy.

    Viva La Resistance.

I think you guys are missing it just a little...

It's not usuallly the people maintaining bind who find the bugs.. it's the regular users. When someone finds a bug, they may wish to report it to a malicious party instead of the project maintainers. Which would be very bad too... So people are going around exploiting bugs way before anyone realizes they are bugs.

    Just my $.02 as well

Damn, I'd hate to see a full length movie at such a low quality it only took up 8.5MB.

Anyways, It is my understanding that the whole thing about DVD's is that they are all burned /w two layers... Wether it's retail dvds or dvd-r's.. It's also my understanding that the 8.5GigaByte disc actually refers to both sides as one.

So, assuming this... you could actually fit a full length dvd on one dvd-r...

    Yeah, no kidding!

I know many people (including myself) that use vi (or vim) for very big c/c++ projects! It's fast, efficient, and has zero overhead!

What the heck do you use? Predefined macros that you drag and drop into some gui program and somehow come up with something that works?

vi may not have a spelling/syntax checker, but if you write bad code anyway.. Why are you writing programs?
