I used to run a computer shop several years ago. ('99)
We had a customer bring in his PC that was 2 weeks out of warranty.
The Power Supply had died, and it wouldn't boot.
On closer examination, it turned out that a capacitor had blown it's head, inside the PS, surging the rest of the systems. (no surge protector could protect this!).
It took out (literally frying) -Motherboard -2 sticks of 32meg SDRAM -Hard Drive -Floppy -CDROM -Soundcard (the main AWE64 chip was bubbled) -Network Card
Customer was pretty pissed off, (2 weeks out of warranty!), and we built him a whole new PC, at our cost price, to keep him happy. (and naturally, it hadn't ever backed up his data)
So after building a whole new PC, he took the box home. Calls back in 20 minutes: it still isn't working!
Turns out that it also killed the Mouse and Keyboard at home!
The ONLY part that survived, was the Pentium II - 266 CPU.. good ol' Slot1, in a big black cartridge!
That CPU later formed part of a dual-cpu server, that is running to this day! (hosting my website!:)
has plenty of great freeware games and educational programs for kids.
I've been loading these onto Primary School computers that I administer, and it's been great. The kids and teachers love them, and it keep them OFF the internet, wasting time and bandwidth on crappy flash games.
I successfully connected one between my Nokia 5110 and my Palm IIIx
basically turns the palm/phone into a modem, and away you go. Completely transparent... and all cool Palm Net apps work fine.. mail, web, telnet, vnc:-)
but I have a 7110 now.. (and Palm IIIc) so I don't need the cable anymore.
Yes.. I did take it from the 5th Season StarTrek:TNG episode.. It was a good episode, and it's a good enough nick, that it's not overtly 'trekky'.. which can be a good thing, sometimes:)
I've been using it for years (well, since the episode aired) back in the BBS days of the early 90's
Unfortunatly, it was already take on/. by the time I signed up, so I used my fallback nick (which I started using on IRC, after getting dropped off, and Darmok was still connected)
I have had a IIIx for almost 18 months now (invaluable!)
I still find the standard apps useful enough for keeping notes / calender etc...
Here are some of the other apps I've installed
Launcher III
Replaces the standard PalmOS 'shell' with a nicer tabbed version. you can drag/drop apps to sort them/delete them/beam them.
HackMaster
very useful little program, that accepts many 1000's of plugin 'hacks' that modify the way the PalmOS works.
Palmamp.
I have an MP3 player in my car (old Pentium). I use PalmAmp to control the music while I'm driving (via serial cable) Controls playing/playlist/equalizer.
Diddlebug.
Lets you scribble notes, and set a reminder.. don't have to use graffiti to jot down quick notes.
Address+
A small addon for the standard Address book. Integrates every Postcode in Australia, for quick lookup.
FreeCell
very nice version of Freecell
Eudora Web/Email
I have a TDK Globalpulse cable, that links to my Nokia 5110. very good email/web access while on the road.
YAUC
Yet another Unit convertor. Handles just about every obscure unit to convert to/from
TealInfo
mini doc-type viewer. there are many TealInfo Folios covering a wide range of topics. Folios are hyperlinked documents.
Ones I frequently reference include: detailed info on all Intel CPUs, list of nearly every TCP/IP Port etc..
Vortex of Sound has obtained a letter from Oakland's Bankruptcy Court that seems to suggest that Guillemot wishes to purchase what's left of Aureal, the beleaguered audio hardware company. If it goes through, this wouldn't be the first time Guillemot bailed out a company in danger of going under - they previously purchased Hercules and Thrustmaster.

for years, I've set slashdot to deliver the 'light' version to me.
that way, it loads lightening fast even on a 33.6 modem link, which I'm frequently on.
it's probably just the new setup at the moment, but it does seem a little slower
RB
Yes..
It was filmed in Australia (Fox Studios, Sydney, I believe), so it's no wonder you didn't see them 'at work'
Includes software for the palm + a serial cable.

they are a business, and their primary responsibility will always have to be making money for the stockholders.
iD software is still a privately held company..
no stockholders!
almost a rarity these days, eh?
the "first post" was actually deleted?
:)))
when I viewed this message, I only see 2 messages...
so I changed the view so I'd see all -1 posts...
and still only 2 messages?
not that I really want to.. but what if some weirdo actually wants to *see* the "me first" messages!
