well, here it's a lovley sunny day, not a cloud in the sky, about 10 centigrade, speaking of which, does anyone know what's the difference (if any) between Celsius and centigrade? I've only ever seen them used interchangably.
In the short term, yes, a huge amount of energy, (not to mention money and materials) would have to be expended to build a space elevator. The whole point is that once it's built, moving stuff up and down requires very little energy at all. This is because energy can be generated by the lifts/shuttles/cars/climbers/whatever as they descend down the elevator, convert gravitational potential energy to, well, electricity would be probably be most useful. This energy is then used to power the lifts back up. Sure energy will be lost, but not as much as it takes to lift the entire shuttle+external tank+boosters combo up to even a low orbit.
On your html keyboard, have keys for etc. and then have a kind of extra shift key that would turn the tag into a close tag, that would get rid of the need for a whole bunch of AND keys. Not that I expect to see one of these but it's an interesting idea.
But the PM has a lot less power than the president. It's my (limited) understanding that Bush can do pretty much whatever he wants providing he puts it in a presidential order thingy. Offically, Blair isn't allowed to do anything without parliment's go-ahead. However you get leaders, both systems work (kinda).
I've been using it for about a year now and it works pretty well for me, for a windoze program it's relitivly nice and probably worth the £15 odd quid I shelled out for it.
While we're on the subject, does any one know if it's easy to do this sort of project under windoze? (and before you start up the flame throwers, I promise I'll get round to tring linix Real Soon Now, I promise, ok?)
I'll second that, I'm still half way through reading it but here's one bit that I noticed:
The collapse of the lighthouse (In Alexandrea) must have been astonishing, like watching the World Trade Center fall over. But it took only a few seconds, and if you were looking the other way when it happened, you might have missed it entirely - you'd see nothing but blue breakers rolling in from the Mediterranean, hiding a field of ruins, quickly forgotten.
What can I say. The article was written in 1996 btw.
How much varity does the average desert have in the average person's imagination? Not a lot to most people. If Lucus knew all about different types of desert maybe he'd have written about one rather than just bringing up the usual; orange sand, very hot, malarky that most people think of.
(Course I realise I'm just assuming he doesn't know much about deserts. Maybe he was just going for something everyone would recognise as a desert. Acctually that sounds more likely than my explanation doesn't it? Ignore me please)
Am I the only one to see the irony in the fact that a/. Ed goes a bit copy/paste mad and suddenly there's not 1 dupe but at least 16 comments (out of 32 at the mo) all saying the same thing. I mean, did you think that no one else had noticed?

easy, use the motor that grips the cable to brake as it comes down (you'll need to do this any way, or, splat!), this will generate electricity. Either store this in battries or do the oposite of the way up and beam it down for collection.

I'nm guessing you havn't seen it then. The edan project is, well, huge. The first (and second and third etc) thing you will say if you see it is, Wow.
Even if you think plants are the most boring things imaginable you'll be impressed. It wasn't undertaken for monetry gain, half the money came from the UK's Millenium commision, yup the ones that built the dome in London. It's primary aim is to educate people about plants, there uses, and why there are less now than there used to be. If you have to look at it ina cynicle, what is it doing for me way, try this. The biomes are fairly self contained structures that could if needed hold their own atmosphere, sound useful for space exploration?
If america has the largest prison population in the world why do the inhabitents insist on calling it the "Land of the Free"? Surly "land of the incarcirated" is more accurate (if less snappy). It now looks like the govenment of said country is taking the 'different' option of trying to gag it's own citizans and embark on a campaign of empire building. I'll take the grinning fool over the sub normal chimp any day thank you, at least he was demorcraticly elected.
Ahh, I allways wondered what those lines were, at first I thought it was bad pixels but then I realised you don't get them on a tube.
Also, as I understand it there is a certain probability of a bad pixel occuring in the manufacturing process, hence the much larger cost of bigger screens. Bigger screen=more pixels=more displays with too many bad pixels that have to be thrown away. Although there is advances in manufacture every few months it seems

$$$$$, that's why.

The one comment in the whole lot that made me laugh out loud, shame no one trusts me with mod points.
and here on the BBC

Still think the US it the "land of the free"?

Woha wait up son, you have to line up behind Blair, he's pretty determined to make the UK the next US state.
Well, I've got no money and I'm running WinME, go figure.
Doh!

Here to save you looking for yourselves. I like the part where the paper about the /. effect gets /.ed it's self.
We already are, we're called Brits. £12 a CD and £19 a DVD is pretty typical over here, outside of special offers. (about $18 and $30 repectively).
I guess English really is hard to learn.
Yup, it sure is.
