You're absolutely right on the northern ice caps melting having no effect on the water level of the Earth. However, there's also the south. Antarctica is a continent, so all that ice is trapped on land. Melting occuring at the south pole most certainly will affect the Earth's water level.
Even without the water level rising, there could be problems caused by adding that much freshwater into the ocean. Discover Magazine had an article some time ago about how this could disrupt the Gulf Stream, which is a significant force in distributing temperature, and thus lead to serious climate change.
No, it works internally as either USB2 or PCI Express. From the web site:
The ExpressCard standard supports both the USB 2.0 and PCI Express interfaces.
Card manufacturers are able to choose whichever bus is appropriate to their application; the performance of PCI Express, or from the wide range of solutions supported by USB.
All host PC ExpressCard slots will support cards using either interface. The host platform no longer needs to incorporate a bridge chip between the chipset and the socket. PCI Express and USB 2.0 are fully hot-pluggable.
Okay, with this story and the OS X Panther story, apparently the new thing is to promote your own articles on Slashdot to get traffic instead of waiting for someone else to maybe do it. How's that for influence? Slashdot is now considered an important promotional tool by established tech sites.
I'm not complaining, mind you. They still need to get through the editors, so it's not degrading the quality (cough) of Slashdot at all, it's just an interesting turnabout. Yes, I do realize it's not the first time either, but the big boys usually don't do it.
Please keep in mind I'm being blatantly lazy; those were just a couple of the links that popped up on Google, not necessarily the best ones. This debate just goes on and on and I don't care to get involved again. I just wanted to point out that that article isn't the last word on the subject.
The bottom line is that there's no reliable studies for or against Dvorak. It would be good if someone did one to help put the debate to rest, but no one has as of yet. I use it, I like it, but that's just my personal opinion.
The only downside is how good of a job it can do if you set it for Dora the Explorer, Blues Clues - a couple marathons later and you will have more shows than I'll let my little one watch.
Season Passes have a "keep at most" setting. You can limit it to 1-5 episodes if you want. If another one comes along, it will replace the oldest one. You can also set it to save episodes until you delete them, in which case it would ignore the extra episodes until you delete one of the recorded ones.
Hope their new standard includes support for daisy chaining controllers. Not that LAN play isn't vastly superior to split-screen, but since they're trying to do it right they might as well go all the way.
A lot of people seem to like bashing this kid because of how unrealistic this is. I think it's unrealistic too, but I think he should do it anyway. Why? Because he'll learn a LOT in the process and it will make him a much better programmer. I know because I was this kid. I've started a number of projects in the past that were completely delusional in retrospect. However, this kept me coding, and it kept me learning. For some people, what keeps them inspired and motivated is working on the Next Big Thing, not fiddling around for the fun of it. Although none of those projects were completed, I was easily among the best, if not the best, programmer in my classes, and my teachers knew it. While he may not end up making the product he wants to make, what he will do is make himself a much better programmer with a lot of knowledge in this area, a lot more than the average coder coming out of college. It will serve him very well later on, since this is clearly the field he wants to work in.
The only way this will backfire is if he puts so much faith in this project that he neglects his grades, his search for a real job, or worse, drops out of college to pursue this. I don't think he will, because he knows it's huge (if not how huge) and there will be plenty of time for reality to sink in.
Last night, after reading "Voices from the Hellmouth," I thought about creating some sort of web site for people going through this, as I have. Maybe a place where kids can vent, talk to other kids in similar situations, and get help on specific topics like suicide, racism, obesity, etc. Judging from the responses to the story and even some of the e-mails posted in this one, other people must want to help too.
Unfortunately, since I don't know Perl/CGI/etc, I can't create a truly dynamic web site and therefore can't spearhead the project. However, I would love to contribute to such a project any way I can, through ideas, content, web design, etc.
Please post if you're interested in doing something like this. I for one can't help but want to reach out and help the kids who are going through the same torment I went through.

Yup, but also keep in mind that The Fable of the Keys is not without its own problems.

Oops. You are correct, sir. Shows how long it's been since I last bothered with PC controllers. Like most PC people I've been on keyboard+mouse.
