  1. Not about computers but, on Innovative Uses for a Computer Classroom? · · Score: 2, Insightful

Whatever you end up doing, be lienent on those paper deadlines. Freshmen are the worst for doing quality work on deadlines. A good thing to do is set a deadline for class one day. Then say that you think they could use a little more time on their work and push it back by a class session. This is a life saver for the student who punched out 10 pages in one night and really did not have a chance to proof it.

Um, maybe if you TALKED to your wife about your sex life things might get bettter. If she is SO addicted to porn, that means she at least is very open sexually and you could have a very honest talk (if you're willing to open up to) about your lovemaking. Voice your thoughts to her. Feeling "used is ridiculous. She's your wife for goodness sakes! You're not like some sorority girl who got banged and dropped after a frat party.

  5. Engineers Aren't Going Anywhere on Engineer in a Box? · · Score: 3, Insightful

At first I thought there was some insightful point to this article; then I realized it was just another "Oh no, technology is making us feel old and forcing us to redefine our attitudes" speil. No, engineers aren't going anywhere. The reason no one tinkers anymore is because they don't have to. Engineering is, at it's heart, about solving problems and just becuase we now have tremendously powerful tools to aid us, doesn't mean just anyone can do it. There always has been (and always will be) "good" and "bad" engineers with that distcintion being made about how creatively and quickly an each can solve a problem. There will always be math becuase no honest engineer is going to trust a software package to such a degree that they can simply forget the underlying princples. New engineers simply don't have to depend on their ability to wire a breadboard or draft schematics by hand. They can foucus on design and effeicent instead of cold, hard basics.

Only the methods change. Engineering never gets easier or less intense.

  6. So now what? on Napster files for Chapter 11 bankruptcy · · Score: 1

I'm confused at what point exactly we can stop caring about what's left of Napster. They obviously were never going to make any money months ago. A buy out was pretty obvious at that point even at that point and this bankrupcty pretty much seals it. Do we keep talking about it for nostalgia's sake? We have so many new and better P2P clients that are ripe for discussion.

Napster is dead, live long everything else!

It's funny how I got two replies: one said I paid too much for my headphones, the other said I have to buy better ones. Sure made me laugh. I probably should have known better than to have an opinion on lossy vs non-lossy music codecs. It's like saying "My FreeBSD server is really great and I don't like Linux" around here.

This is still a good thing anyway. Lots of people will at least consider buying this. I am, at least.

  8. Re:i dont know about mp3... on Vivendi Offering MP3 Song for Sale · · Score: 1

It is kinda sad to think they will probably only offer in 128kbps format since that's "perfect" to the ears of corporate music execs (or at least whoever they have telling them it is). Lossy music wouldn't be so bad if the big boys realized that 192kbps is the lowest that they should offer. I honestly can't tell the difference between a 192kbps file and a CD track of the same song (and I have a very nice pair of $150 headphones).

  9. At least this ends the hatred on Trackball 50 Years Old · · Score: 3, Funny

As much as I loath trackballs, I must say that this is refreshing. After all the shouting matchings and near fists fights over the supremacy of the trackball over the mouse and vice versa, this is the sorta thing that makes me think world peace is possible. I think I'll show this to those trackball heathens I call friends and we can all enjoy a good cry and sing "Why Can't We be Friends?".

  11. No on Do Media Companies Have Copyright Wrong? · · Score: 1

this guy has it all wrong. Copyright today means exactly what the sum of its parts mean: The right to copy. It's that simple. When you buy a cd you have licensed it and have the ability to copy it for your own personal use. But these copies are second hand and are not perfect from the original, which the record company owns. They make money by making copies from the original and selling those. It's their right alone to do that. As technology progresses, new formats will come out that contain better and better sound quality which the record companies will exercise their right to make music in. This same music that you may already have will be charged for two reasons: 1. It's of better quality and format. 2. (The point I'm going for) It's ANOTHER COPY. It's the record companies right to charge for addition copies. That's how they make money after all. If we go on the assumption that once you pay for music that all copies there after are free then stupidity would rule. People would pay once and then demand 800 free copies for their friends or the music companies would have to charge millions for music in order to turn a profit. So in Summary, suck it up and pay again for that Beetles album. Life's a bitch like that.
