  1. Such a site at the U. of U. is asking for trouble on Intellectual Property and a Censored Slash Site? · · Score: 1

Utah is quite different from the rest of the US. Unwritten rules of many kinds are of far greater importance than the first amendment there.
Although the University of Utah is rather open-minded compared to, say, BYU, I'm not at all surprised that this site got shut down.

  2. Slow speed but also horrendous ping time on Iridium Offers Data service - IRC From Anywhere! · · Score: 2
Aren't the Iridium satellites in geosynchronous orbit ? that's 36000Km * 2 = 72000Km each a packet has to travel to go from the ground back to the ground, which introduces a lag of 240ms. So the ping time will be 240ms * 2 = 480ms, not counting the routing on the ground before the uplink and after the downlink.

So in the very best case, the ping time will be *at least* half a second, and I suspect probably closer to a second in reality. Forget playing Quake in Antartica ...

Hmm, let's see : 70000 light years, 75 years to return, 70000/75 ~= 933.4 times the speed of light == warp 933.4 in the Star Trek model of "physics". Even assuming Voyager can go faster than warp 9-point-something, it's awfully faster than any conventional ST vessel.

So yes, Microsoft is better than Palm, just because Palm can't fork off that kind of money to do just as good.

My point is, Microsoft is so entrenched in the industry, and so aggressive, that they squelch competitors, whether it's by buying them or outspending them. End result : Microsoft becomes a monopoly on a new market once more and makes products that might be good but certainly aren't fantastic. That's what monopolies do.
