Your comparison is quite flawed. I can purchase a Corvette (if I only had $30,000+ to spend) and drive it at 65 or 70 depending upon the state _right now_. There are no motherboards available for the P4 right now. That would be like my buying a new 'Vette and leaving it parked in the garage for several months while Chevrolet designs an engine for it. It still looks shiny and new, but I can't do too much with it.
I would like to send an anonymous email to the BSA tipping them off to the fact that to my knowledge, Slashdot does not have *any* Microsoft liscenses for their software.
Hell yeah. We've got a multiple T3 hosting our site where I work. It's shared among less than 100 other workers. I've gotten spoiled lately and have been known to curse at my home PC.
The Drudge Report has vowed to post the latest unconfirmed news before the major news channels are willing to report. It seems to be overloaded, so here's a mirror.
The whole "Gore created the Internet" thing was taken *way* out of context. Gore has actually done a lot to promote the development of the Internet and his claim was to create the Internet as we know it today. I think that Gore's support of the advancement of technology is a *good thing*
The panhandle of Florida is actually in the Central time zone. This apparently confused some people who were calculating votes before all the precincts closed.
Where do you work. I know Best Buy and Radio Shack have been offering DirecPC for a while now. Circuit City used to offer it. I do tech support for an electronics store and from my experience, the "Windows 98 only and factory installed USB" really means that it's not guaranteed to work outside of those specs, but probably will. Win 95 OSR2, Win2K, and WinME all support USB. I've got an ASUS motherboard with an add-on USB card and I've never had any trouble.
I also live in an area where neither cable or DSL is available, so I'm considering getting a setup similar to this despite the high latency and slow upstream connection.
Not sure if this is a troll or what, but AOL has recently partnered with DirecPC to offer *high speed* 1 way internet access. Basically you have a standard dial-up to AOL for all outgoing packets,so the busy signals are still a problem. The downstream goes through the DirecPC dish at a max of 400Kbps.
It's not even about the points now. I'm just pissed that because some moderator disagrees with my opinion, they choose to mod my post down like the spineless coward he or she is rather than post a rebuttal. This site *used* to promote intelligent discussion, but I guess it would be too much effort to type out a couple of sentences explaining why he/she disagrees.
Sorry, I forgot that *all* viewpoints that dissent from your narrowminded outlook on the world are modded down. If you disagree, or can provide any insight into angles that I have not considered, perhaps you should consider replying to my post as opposed to cowardly modding it down.
I'm sick of people whining about the high cost of daycare and having to wake up at 5 am to take their kids to the babysitter, etc.. The simple solution here is: If you don't want the responsibilities that come with having children, KEEP IT IN YOUR PANTS! It can't get much easier than that. If you want kids, that's great, but don't whine about all the inconveniences that come with that. The fact is having kids is a HUGE responsibility. Fortunately, it's also totally optional.
This has got to be a hoax. Read this post from earlier this week. I'm guessing that some user slapped himself together a web page and submitted it so Slashdot.

We are proud to announce that the first one million Pentium 4's sold will come with a drip tray and an endorsement by George Foreman free of charge.

Too many is when it takes my 56k modem 5 mins to load the thread.

Bush just took Nevada with 4 electoral votes.

Must be some of that "fuzzy math" I've been hearing about.

They told you to say that didn't you?
Pls Stop. You're scaring the elderly!
Please keep with the geek mentality. Your daughter is 011110 months old.
Bush: N/A Gore: N/A"
Maybe someone's just bitter about this!
Thanks.

Exactly. At least the SETI hoax had some (poorly faked) pictures. This one's just a one paragraph blurb.

No one held a gun to my head and forced me to vote either.
An old sock would work just as well.
I hope it's easy to clean.
Science has nothing to do with it. Everybody knows that missing socks can be attributed to Underpants Gnomes
