This technology isn't currently suited for display applications. The cost of production is still too high so that it would be highly cost prohibitive to produce a 15 inch laptop display.

My company (which shall remain unnamed) has been working on this technology for processing and routing applications. It isn't intended to replace LCD displays, but to replace traditional silicon processors.

Light processors have been in the planning and development stages for years now, and once the technology is perfected, will offer lower power consumption and less heat production as opposed to the standard silicon-on-insulator microprocessors that are in use today. The light emitting properties of these chips could also be used in optical routers and fiber switching/repeating applications, however we have yet to overcome the problem of interfacing the dylithium crystal matrix with the carbon nanotube fibres used in high speed optical cable. Hopefully the new flux capacitors in development at IBM's "Deep Space Nine" research facility in Oregon will solve this problem nicely, but it looks like these advancements are still several years off.

The point is not how likely Ralph Nader was to get elected, the point was that your apathetic attitude is the only thing that is keeping our current outdated bipartisan system in existance. If you don't like either of the two major parties' candidates, find a third party candidate who does support what you believe in. You really don't have any right to complain, considering you willingly voted for a candidate who you do not believe in, knowing that other options were out there. That, my friend equates to sheer laziness and is even more reprehensible than not voting at all.

And don't say that it can't happen, because if you can remember that far back, Ross Perot won 19% of the popular vote in 1992.

While those companies ARE profitable, and they DO use Linux as a portion of their business, I'd question your categorizing them as Linux companies. In my opinion, A Linux company is a company who SPECIALIZES in selling a Linux distro, supporting a Linux distro, or selling hardware specifically targetted at the Linux market (VA Linux).

So, yes, IBM does sell boxen with Linux installed, but I REALLY don't think they would be considered a Linux company. Do you happen to know what percentage of IBM's revenue is related to Linux sales or support. I couldn't find a figure, but I'd be willing to bet it's fairly small percentage-wise.

Tivo's use Linux. They also use a hard drive as a recording medium. Is Tivo a hard drive company?

And I'm not going to even start on your comment about the hardware market being profitable. The hardware industry has some of the slimmest margins out there right now. There was a Slashdot article a couple of weeks ago about Compaq exiting the consumer hardware business due to market saturation and lack of profitibility. I'm too lazy to find it right now, but if you're interested here.

RedHat's ADJUSTED earnings were $600,000 on the positive side, however this number is hardly more than corporate ballyhooing from their PR department. Their actual numbers (the ones reported in their SEC filing), show that in Q1, 2001, the quarter in question, RedHat LOST 27.6 million on a total revenue of 25.6 million. That's astonishingly pathetic. RedHat has A LOT of venture capitol in the bank, and they'll be around for a while, but they are far from profitable. Get your facts straight, AC. Linux is a lot of things. It's scalable, reliable, stable, and (perhaps) best of all, it's free, but Linux is NOT a commercial OS. What the hell were these guys thinking when they thought they would be able to take a FREE OS, give it away, and somehow become millionaires in the process. They must've been smoking some of that moderator crack. The whole situation reminds me of the underware gnomes on SouthPark.

    "Step One: Give away software.
    Step Two: .......
    Step Three: Profit!"

I must admit that I was disappointed when the first of the Linux startups started going bellyup, but now it seems to be almost a weekly occurance. Christ, you'd think people would learn. Linux has it's uses but it is not some magical healing salve that will make you rich and handsome, and it should not be treated as such.

And if you disagree, please include the name of ONE profitable Linux company in your reply.

I'm sick of the pointless pissing contests that go on day in and day out in this forum where ignorant (l)users argue incessantly about why their OS of choice is superior to all others. Why can't you just choose the one that works best for YOU and accept that what is best for you may not be best for all other users. MacOS is good for Desktop Publishing and Graphic design. Linux is good for those who value their freedom (speech and beer), and Win2k is good for compatibility and for it's ease of use. x-BSD...Well, I've never used it, but I'm sure it's good for something. The point is, find something that works for you and accept that your solution might not work for everyone.

Maybe it's just me, but the concept of a distributed file server just doesn't sound like a very good idea. I have several reservations about this software to which I couldn't find any acceptable answers on Swarmcast's site.

First of all, what type of security is going to be implemented to prevent hacks. It seems that it would be pretty easy to shore up a single server, or even several in a single datacenter, but it would be a daunting task to protect thousands of machines spread thoughout the world against hackers.

Secondly, what type of redundancy is going to be built into this system. Again, if a file is going to be served from a single centralised machine, it should ideally be fairly reliable, with multiple connections, and RAID to ensure continuous uptime. However, if you're serving tiny pieces of a file from thousands of boxen, it seems to me that if even one of those fragments doesn't make it all the way downstream, the whole file would be worthless. Has Swarmcast done anything to prevent this from happening.

The GPL isn't very appropriate for games, and I doubt open-source games will ever become popular outside of a small group of diehard Linux extremists. The reason for this is that in order to make a sucessful game today, you need to put a LOT of effort into it. In order to create a high quality, playable game in todays market, you need hundereds of developers, several years, and the budget of an average hollywood motion pictures. There aren't that many companies who have the infrastructure to back up such a production, and those who can, sure as hell aren't going to throw millions of dollars as well as thousands of development hours at such a project and then turn around and give it away for free.

I'm not trying to argue against free software, I think it's a Good Thing (tm), but designing a game from the ground up, (or in this case, simply modding the Quake II engine) is not an undertaking that can be accomplished as a hobby in one's spare time. The open-source model is simply not suited for such a task, and until someone figures out how to at least recoup all the money that was put into the development of such a game, the major game companies are going to be sceptical about undertaking such a project.
