  1. The 'iPod' is the new 'Band-Aid' on Latest "iPod Killer" Takes Aim at the Mini · · Score: 1

I work at a major retail store (one of the lesser evil ones) and we just started to carry a good selection of mp3 players including (HP branded)iPod's. In the past we would have maybe 2 or 3 people ask us a month if we carry mp3 players, but now we get that many requests in an hour all looking for "iPod's" or (my favorite) "iPod Walkman's".

They have truely broken the marketing name barrier and have now become the next 'Band-Aid', 'Kleenex', and 'Tylenol' for this generation.

Wow.. Slashdot work in mysterious ways.

Not two minutes after I check my subscription status I finaly get my renew subscription! It must have updated somewhere between me starting to write this last post and submit it.

The Slashdot gods must have looked down on me with pleasure after my $5 sacrifice.

  3. Just My Luck on Paypal Grinds To A Halt · · Score: 3, Interesting

My luck never fails me. Today I ran out of clicks, hits, or whatever Slashdot calls there subscription "points". I also ran out on another website I "subscribe" to so I figured kill two birds with one stone.

So what do I do, I re-subscribe through paypal today and I did notice it was going a tad slow, but I didn't worry too much.

To be honest I thought it was a recent FW upgrade on my router I did the night before acting up. I reflashed back a version and everything seemed ok.

Anyways the issue: I was wondering why my subscription to Slashdot still wasn't showing up. My other subscription was paid within the same minute as the slashdot one, and it went through fine. Weird. As of 9:55pm PST it still hasn't "gone through" (BTW I am confident that it will be fixed and I know it's not Slashdot's fault)

After finding out about the problem, I can only wonder if the Slashdot payment will even go through. My real concern is my bank account being screwed up, I don't want to be billed for $5 in an endless loop.

  4. The Doctor is In... on When Word Processors Are Out: What's The Best Pen? · · Score: 1

For the past 4 years I've used a Dr. Grip Gel almost exclusively. I work at one of the big Office Supply stores, and I've used just about everything.

The Dr. Grip Gel is big enough for my hands and fingers to not fatigue them, but not too big. It also has a good silicone grip so that doesnt get too warm or slip. But the big thing is that it uses Gel Ink, and it's JUST right. Not too oily, not too sticky.

Also It's weight and build quality is pretty good. I find those expensive pens (read: Monte Blanc, Cross, Diplomats, etc.) are nice to look at and write with most of the time, but are too heavy and don't offer any ergonomic features to stop hand fatigue.

I would honestly recommend picking one up and trying it. They retail for about $6.00 which is pricey for one pen (in the cheap pen catagory), but it should last you a few years (with refills)

    -

But, here are a few things to take with you:

    GEL
Smooth as silk, but prone to smearing. Sometimes sticky. Medium Life of Ink, Doesnt dry up.

    Liquid Gel/Liquid Point
Smoothest of all Ink, but almost watery. Extremely prone to smearing though Precise. Shorter Ink Life, Dry's Up Fast. Capped Pens Only.

    BIG PENS/XXL SIZE
SUV of the pen world. Surprizingly Lite for the size. Too Big for Pockets and Organizers.

    Cheap/Freebie Pens
Can't Beat Free. Decent, Least Smooth of All, Usually Sticky Ink. Disposable (bad for the Enviro)

    Executive/Classic Pens
Nice Name, Decent Pen. Usually Heavy, Not always the best Ink. Sturdy*, but Expensive.

*The cheapest made "Expensive" has to be the Monte Blancs. Even though they are Rolex of the pen world, they are built like a Timex. They chip, they are lite weight, and the ink and writing smoothness is average. I've sold these to people for years, and I warn them, but they are too caught up in the name. But I guess a new one is born every minute.

  6. Where have all the other cartoons gone? on 'Dungeons and Dragons' Returns! · · Score: 3

Now that D&D will be coming back to the small screen, I can only pray that someone is smart enough of is rich enough from a software IPO to buy the rights to The Lost City Of Gold. That cartoon was a masterpiece in almost everyway.

You had great writing (a rarity among 80's 'toons or any for that matter) that really made you think that these people were real and that were multi-dimentional.

The main story and even the episode plots were brilliant. I remember after each episode wishing that I was there with the kids and run arround the backyard of my grandparents house pretending.

And another great thing about the series was the fact that it was a very beautifuly animated. It was in that Anime style of the 80's that we all love (or hate). The action scenes from what I remember were very vivid in colors and style.

But what really bothers me is that i've only met a hand full of people that remember the show. But all of them loved it and would give their right testicle to see the series again.

I kinda wish Cartoon Network would shell out some dough for the series and all of the other cool 80s cartoons we grew up on (so far they have a nice spectrum of the 70s so I wont go into that) and have "80's Weekends" or even late nights. They could pull in so much money from the advertisers from all of us geeks that would actually watch it faithfully (look at Toonami and how big and profitable is became).

But internal politics at CN (as always with all Tunner owned channels) and many other reasons will make sure this dream never come to fruition.

The same thing will also never come true for my other wish, that of mtv bring back all of it's 80's content to be shown late nights when they dont have anything on and could actually score some ad cash from all of us 'kids' remebering our "big hair" phase.

Anyways thats it for my bi-annual posting to /. . I mainly never post because i already know my posts will never get read let alone a score of 1 or more and that there has never been a topic that has gotten me out of 'lurker mode'.

Anyways comments would be nice, but money and/or food would be better. Thanks.

Make me sucker #3 with the same computer ;)

My mom bought it I remember the day after christmas '95 or '96 at Circut City. I was with her so I couldnt steer her right with a brand new pentium 60mhz IBM. But thats what I get when I sleep in when mom goes computer huntin'.

At first it was an ok computer, I mean i know my way arround computers but never actually owned one. I feel that since I could fix that baby and work arround some many of it's bugs I could do anything with a computer now.

What i really do miss is the good old DOS Prodigy, may it rest in peace. What I'll never miss is the Navigator Software.

All in all an ok computer for it's time (well for a PB) until 3 months into it the monitor went byebye. after fighting with PB customer service for 3 months (yes, thats three (3) whole months) and threatening a lawsuit we finaly got a 'new' monitor.

I must thank even to this day the caring people over at Circut City for lending us a monitor until the fiasco was done with. Last june the monitor finaly died of old age (actually it probably melted.. man those monitors ran hot.. enough to almost burn your hand).

Sadly I final stopped using it in february when I got a computer sugar daddy (I do the website and graphics, he buys me computer parts). And I say sadly because I used it for so long.

I still have it here next to my desk. I'm thinking of installing linux on it to learn it. My problem is that it now doesnt have a working cdrom, internal modem(which has been replaced by a nice little zoom 33.6), sound card and floppy drive.

I have a nic I'm going to install so i can install linux through a lan.. although I'm still leaning how to accomplish that. If anything I'm going to turn it into a piece of shit firewall for when/if I get DSL. Hell, maybe even a ftp server and print server.. who knows.. i'm not that far enough into learning linux to do that now.

ok, sorry for the long ass post.. this is my 2nd post ever i think, I like being a lurker.. ok, later all.
