No, no, not those 24/7 classical NPR stations, but real public radio is where I find the most new msuci that I go on to love. Check out www.kgnu.org in ther afternoon between 1:00-4:00 (MST) and then after midnight for some of the best stuff out there...

Result: a internal to campus (so fast as hell) p2p network that uses to encrypted traffic to avoid application level shapeing. Lesson: using encryption and smart network coding, even the best filter can be told to take a flying leap.

Say, like Orin Hatch (see the Anti-terrorism act from earlier this week) for the republicans...

In a time like this, createing divisions based on political affiliation helps no one. Realize the world is not a two party system...it's a one and a half party system.

Lets not all forget the lessons of history here. In 1954, under the Eisenhower administration, the United Fruit Company demanded assistance in Guatemala after a change in power braught a new liberal government into power. The US ended up helping UFC overthrow the new, popularly elected government, killing 100's in the process.

The end result? A Dictatorship was created, but UFC gets their land back. Look up PBSUCCESS for more info on the web.

There are plenty of more examples where the US gov has stepped up to the plate for huge corporations, or ignored their deeds, with more harm than good resulting. Microsoft may not be killing people (yet), but their economic practices may someday be just as deadly.

Certainly, there should be a program that youngsters go through that teaches about the evils of abuse. Abuse in any form, be it alcohol, pot, or X, is bad - it ruins not only the abusers life but those around the abuser as well. However, in DARE, or at least my DARE experience, which was admitably 8 years ago, there was no differentiation between abuse and recreational use.

Lets reform DARE into an actually education program about abuse instead of a propaganda machine.

    > If you think Social Security is a small thing you're not familar with the Federal Budget.

I was being ironic...however, compared to, say, the military budget, SS is smaller (or, "less large").

As far as taxing the rich, I was recently reading comments on one of the other political postings on slashdot, and, admitably this is off slashdot, I saw a interesting number: the top 10% of Americans pay 33% of the taxes in the country. One might think, "that's alot!" And then you realize that those same folks control well over 50% of the nations wealth. And then you think "Oh, nevermind."

Lets see, socialy just. I admit, the term isn't very discriptive for those who havn't heard it before. Here is the basic concept: Social justice is really no more than putting the effects of one's actions on others at a similar level to the effect they will have on you. Of course, it's just as unhealthy to put everyone else first, but if a majority of Americans started to try and balance that field a bit more, world would be a more just place for sure. I use "justice" in the same way as the Consitution.

    To answer your qeustions...
1 - I often ask the same qeustion to those on the other side (or, hell, on the "more government" side as well). I personal donate several hours a week to one cause or another. This sometimes includes money, but more often its time spent voulenteering and writting op-ed pieces (my spelling may suck, but with a good editor and spell check, I really can write well :-). And as far as Welfare and SS go, there is a reason welfare is failing and SS is constantly debated. Welfare in this country has never been able to get past a "treat the symptoms" system. Instead of preventing future use, through job training and education, we mearly hand out money - talk about silly. When people talk about doing away with welfare, what they really should be saying is reforming welfare (and not the kind of reform we've been having, which is basicly cutting the budget). As for SS, It's actually not that sick...and if we use some of the "surplus," there is no reason it wouldn't continue to be on good terms for years to come.

And one thing I have to debunk: government has not grown larger under Clinton\Gore (not that I support Gore, mind you - I don't). They cut the federal budget year after year, and slashed the funding to many programs (for example, the BIA) by over 50%. The federal government is much smaller today than in '92.

I'm always happy to debate with a non-"knee jerk" - so feel free to respond! :-) It always fun to find someone on the otherside of issues who isn't over reactionary.

Sure, we understand that we need to pay a little of that money to the government to pay for important things like national defense and other small things like social security. But the fact the the large portion of the corporations taxes should be placed on the shareholder is nothing more than corporate tax evasion. How has the money to help pay this social costs? Companies. Not Joe Blow with five shares. Lets not think about how we can help the rich saty that way - lets think about how we can become more socialy just.
